Society/Culture Bourke st incident ( again )

Early days, but from all I've seen and read the Police handled this horrendous situation very well.

You reckon?

One of them should be seriously injured/dead. He handled the knife attack appallingly. Desk job for him.

Are cars an actual explosion risk when on fire? They always blow up in Hollywood, but my understanding was that the fuel in vehicle fuel tanks require a lot of oxygen to explode, and will just burn away slowly rather than go up in a large explosion.
Can happen but fuel tanks are designed to prevent it from happening.

Yeah, if you ever wanted to know why the cops in America shoot as soon as they see someone with a weapon come at them, the clips from this incidence provide you with a good reason. Shouldn't have ever let him get within striking distance of them.
They murder unarmed people all the time...usually black
MeRicA gun laws mean anyone could be carrying a gun so they have that excuse

ViCPOL did everything they could to stop him before shooting him. Batons and verbals, and then finally shot him after he kept trying to stab them.
My question is why? He could have injured a cop, and if he did, that could have been prevented.

People that apply hindsight will say "but the police did not get injured". I wonder why let luck dictate if an armed person harms more people.

Cars that run on gas as well as regular fuel go boom. I've seen it.

Gas bottles (purportedly what was in the car) are designed to jet off the flame before they explode.

I know because I was once 3 feet away from one that went off.

They are useless for a bomb unless engineering modifications are employed. If this clown knew what he was doing, there would be bodies lying all over Bourke Street.

sure seems like Australian cops and American cops are at opposite extremes, with the correct action somewhere in the middle.

I would say Aussie police are more in the middle with UK police being the opposite to the US

There were literally thousands of innocent bystanders in the area so that would have been a concern.

They also tried to stop him with verbals and batons.

When that didn't work/ was clearly not safe to continue with, they shot him.

Appropriate response by the cops IMO. Couldn't ask for more, particularly in the heat of the moment with seconds to make a decision.

I'm certain the policeman with the baton got cut at least twice.

All the people saying the police were hopeless here are a bunch of idiots with no remote idea how to handle a situation like this.
I thought it was really impressive how patient they were before pulling out the gun, trying to disarm him with their batons while backup was on the way.

The cops didn't know that he'd already killed someone. There were people everywhere, did you expect them to jump out of the car Dirty Harry style? If they had of started shooting a moving object it could have been alot worse.

Cop deserves an award. Showed incredible restraint at risk of his own safety, ending up saving some blokes life who for all we know at this stage might be a pillar of the community having a mental breakdown.
As a lawyer I agree.

As a layperson he would deserve an award for shooting him in the head.

Dad was just inside a shop there whilst this was going on. Thank * he wasn't walking along the street, Jesus Christ. According to him, there was a massive explosion and then they basically got locked inside the store. They weren't let out until the coppers came by and then they needed a police escort to get out of the area. R.I.P. to the poor person who was killed. Absolutely terrible

Not as much blood as I'd thought there would be .... maybe he's just got a hole in one of his lungs and a couple of snapped ribs
if you want to see blood, search twitter
for bourke street blood
