Personally, I'd love for us to magic 1 and our future 1st into 2, 3 and 6 and take Lukosius, Rankine and Smith, but then reality sets in.

If we draft Lukosius, I reckon we're going to adopt a similar game style to Adelaide.

See, when you compare him to similar stories in recent drafts like Bontempelli, Cripps and Fyfe, they started to get the possession accumulation under their belts at least in the back half of their final junior season. So there was a body of work that suggested they'll develop and AFL-level work rate for that midfield role.

RCD doesn't have that, and in some ways has even less of it than Scrimshaw had a few years back. The difference there seems to be in his aggression and general mentality, so I don't think he's going to implode like Jack did (albeit in a situation that was not ideal in being draft to the GC as a key defender), but it's enough for him to slide well past 13.

I think 10-19 is a reasonable assessment, with GWS, Brisbane and Richmond the most likely to take the risk on him.

RCD had a terrific finals series. He has come along late in the year.

Bont, Cripps and Fyfe are high bars no doubt but RCD has had a similar projection so far. Bont had an ordinary carnival but then played a handful of big games toward the end of the TAC season. Crippa was AA at the Carnival but didn't set the back end of the year on fire. And Fyfe didn't do a whole lot until the WAFL Colts finals series and that was as a forward. None of them had stamina as 18yo's. But they all had size and great potential.

Don't think there's much difference in our expected range. Mine a couple spots higher, yours a couple spots lower. But i just would personally take him at the high end range. Probably because of the 3 examples you raised. High reward.

Risk...now that's an interesting one. Some see risk in guys like RCD and Williams. Yeah granted. But i also see risk in guys who might not be good enough at AFL level but have had great U18 years. Me personally, if i had say Pick 11, i see more risk using it on a Clark or a Stocker than an RCD or a Williams.

It's all very subjective though. In the end it's who's best for 18 different clubs in 18 different situations. And we use the actual draft as our first measuring stick and ultimately careers and influence on a club as the ultimate measuring stick.

Check out the way this article is worded.

"Carlton is weighing up trading their pick 1 for the Gold Coast’s picks 3 and 6"

Have GC actually made us an offer?

It would seem very strange to "weigh up" an option that doesn't exist.

It's one thing to evaluate each candidate for pick 1, but it's another thing altogether to weigh up a potential trade if an offer has never been proposed by GC to begin with. Do they know something we don't?

Add Lukosius and Rozee to our yonsters and we’re set for a decade.
oh yeah, I'm with ya....probably prefer Smith to Rozee if he's available, but either way would get the blood flowing.

Add with the lower picks a Gibbons/Grigg (if either still available) and BSOS....together with Sam Fisher (20yo) , Mason Blakey (19yo) and Jed Lamb in the Rookie draft, and I'd be a very happy Mr Ed!!

Ethan Penrith in Carlton’s Next Generation Academy is also a pretty exciting prospect too...unlucky not to be drafted last year by all reports

longer than that if we keep drafting and trading with our brains in gear and not in our arse..............

Yes Walsh is your safe selection variety , clearly a step up on any other midfielder in this draft and I suppose keeping circumspect for one more draft is ok too, boring but medicine we have to take.

This is probably the least I've followed under 18s in a couple years. That said, my brief views of highlight videos make Smith look way more enticing to me.

I would be happy with Walsh, no doubt. That said, he seems to be in the Tom Scully mould of being an ultra fit neat player without much game breaking ability (but I do see the value in being able to just get truckloads of the footy), which will get him to lots of possessions. Looks fairly weak over the footy compared to Smith.

Smith has burst pace, strength over the footy and up forward and looks to have the neater disposal.

This is all mainly from the Vic Metro v Country game, and really just first impressions.

Should Walsh be regarded higher due to leadership quality?

Would love the insight of some of the track watchers here...

Yep. Since 2015 they have told us what they are going to do and have done it. We turned over the list and brought in talented youth in bulk over 3 years. Quantity of quality.

Now we are in the stability and cohesion phase. No coincidence we traded out multiple lower picks for 2 quality players and retained our 2 first picks for the next 2 years. Quality over quantity now.

The only miss was missing out on the experienced mid in Shiel. Nearly everything is going to plan so far but the 2 who are left holding the can a touch are Bolton and Cripps. I think there wish would be to give them Walsh next year. He is not Shiel immediately, far from it, but he can make an impact 1st year just like Selwood did, Judd did, Rioli did, Stephenson did, even McGrath and Brayshaw did. Dangerfield did say that after training with Walsh last year he would have loved to have him in the side this year.

I think Walsh is the right thing for Carlton FC, the whole of Carlton FC. And if GC want him badly enough they'll have to drag him out of our cold dead hands as Red Bull mentioned above.
Agree with most of what you have said but for the $$, I think Shiel was not a miss. A miss if he would have come for $900k, but not $1.2M as reported.

We are in a win-win here, Walsh will be great and whatever might come in for 3/6 or any other similar trade down from 1 could turn out quantity of quality and be a bigger win than pick 1 Walsh or just a win of 2 solid best 22 player in a couple of years.

Premiership sides have about 8-10 elite to Agrade talent and then an even spread of solid footballers with depth covering 6-8 injuries. Elite - A grade in two years (Cripps, Docherty, SPS, Dow, Setterfield, Curnow, McKay, Weirering, Marchbank, O’Brien, ? This years top pick/s).

Our depth is only one trade/draft period away from filling up to where it needs to be. Then sit back and enjoy the ride.

Walsh is clearly the best midfielder in this draft, has excellent endurance, footy IQ, and production, accumulates high possessions.A very good leadership potential too but kicking action ok not elite.
Most people in the know laud him as 1st selection and there's a good reason for that.
To me he’s more a cake and less icing type of player, but worthy of being called out 1st and will fill our requirements

Like, what is the mail?
For me I look at Body Language of successful people. Bolton, SOS, LoGuidice and others have traits in their body language and speech that you can see in other successful leaders in sporting clubs and business.

Successful leaders own the situation they are in and are upfront about it taking responsibility regardless of whether they were the cause (as SOS and Bolton acknowledged when they took over the reigns). They have done everything they said they would and stuck to the path without pressure changing that path. It must have been hard to face the media with the scrutiny and continue to hold their nerve.

I have no direct mail from anybody in the under 18’s industry, but highlights and reports I have read plus looking at body language and speech of players and their interviews suggests that we are in a fortunate position. Walsh may not end up the most elite player of the draft but he has the attitude and belief to be definitely one of the top 3 or 4 most valuable over a career (barring injury). If we trade down to 3/6 which is the most likely, then the other players in top 8 that I have seen in interviews/highlights etc - I have great confidence could be an overall better outcome or break even with Walsh.

The big thing for me is that our last 3 drafts, the players we have brought in and from current performances so far when compared with other picks close to them and their performances to date - SOS’ strike rate is very high.

So whichever way he goes, the result will be a big win. If we get offered a trade down to multiple top 10’s - he will only take it knowing that we are better off and he will get another great draft outcome.

As much as speculating on all possible scenarios is quite enjoyable, I am comfortable waiting for any result in knowing that our list is in good hands and with the new Sports guru, we will be a surprise packet as we won’t be in bottom 4 like many ‘experts’ have us.

Highlight on Bolton & SOS but a super-highlight on MLG.

I can see that MLG has tried to change his nature (or at least the nature he felt compelled to portray) but someone will need to show me vision or put forward some audio where MLG had nothing but a forceful delivery to stamp his claims...and that's not nearly enough.

SOS is perceived to be arrogant but is much more of an introvert than what may be on display.
He's confident but I still wonder just a little whether the Shiel thing knocked him around just a little.
SOS is not arrogant - he has a strong sense of belief and values. This is shown by how he sticks to his guns. Indicated by his actions, especially around Bryce Gibbs trade where didn’t give in the first year. Got what he wanted year 2.

Arrogance is an act of overconfidence but when heat is on, they buckle. Shown by Dodoro with Shiel trade. Gave up too much but as always he went in hard and blinked at the end.

SOS knows where we sit in this draft. We take pick 1 and we win for where we are at Walsh will be gold and there is a chance at least one club but likely three want to shuffle the order and we get a bigger win overall. If that’s 3/6 and it’s on the table or whether we do a multi club shuffle with GC and one of SA clubs to get 3 first rounders we will still win.

I do think however we are after quality mids right now and the only options will be Walsh or Smith and Caldwell or Rozee. Ranking best talent but attitude is not in top 20 and SOS is big on that.

Keep pick 1 and take Walsh. Simple

.....and for the all the scenarios offered here that's what will happen. I reckon the club would jump at a deal for our Pick 1 and next years first for picks 2,3 & 6 (I would) but it simply won't happen.

We will go to the draft with Picks 1 (Walsh), 69 & 71 and pick up H.Goddard as a DFA plus some rookies. Almost sure

There's focused. And then there's overdoing it a little. Especially as a rookie. Surely some life balance is important too?

Not ignoring the obvious talent, but worried about him burning out way too quickly...

Clubs will work with him to ensure he gets the best out of himself and doesn't burn out. He'll have strong networks surrounding him once drafted.

I think people are looking into this a bit too much. By all reports, his actions are self driven. If they were imposed on him by others, it would be a different case and maybe of greater concern to clubs.

I personally think it's a good thing. He has a dream to be an AFL player and make the best of himself. It shows his determination and what he's willing to do to succeed.
