He is nothing like Schache or Watts, Patton, Boyd

Lukosius's tank is of one of an elite midfielder. Not too many tall defenders will be able to sustain his workrate, so he will find space all over the ground, especially with zones being prevalent

Yes his floor could be a Westoff, but that is still a 250 game player.
Wasn't his endurance at the combine only top 1/3 of the draft class or something? I remember it not being as good as I thought it had been...

My ideal scenario: we trade pick 1 for 3 and whatever we can get out of GC. Certainly won’t be pick 6 .. but reckon it could be more than 24.

Potential for 24 and 29 to be packaged - maybe to Tigers for 17.

We could grab 3 + 17 for pick 1. The only reason I see this as a possibility is bc of all the talk around Sam Walsh for his leadership. GC may pay a a little overs for someone of that type of character.

We take Rankine at 3 (I want Rankine at 1 so it works for me).

I've outlined a series of hypothetical delistings and deals after trading down from pick 1 to ultimately wind up selecting at (before you factor in how bids affect pick numbers) 3, 5, 23, 29, 31, 50 & 65, then taking BSOS late.

In that, I had us targeting Bailey at 23 in order to get ahead of Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sydney, Richmond and St Kilda in the back end of the second round, though some of those are dependent on where bids fall for Academy and F/S players (Sydney and the Dogs might not have live picks until the third and fourth rounds, for example).

There's talk he may slide even further, but I doubt he'll make it past the Hawks. We've got two future thirds we can use in a straight trade, but I'm still holding out hope we keep cashing in by trading down towards the bottom of the top 30 and give the list some of the great talent on offer in the top 50 of this draft.

If Williams slides out of the top 40, we're a great chance to trade back into the order for him.
I don’t think will be necessary to trade into the 20s to get a good player with the second pick. There are enough good players for one to slide.

Is his endurance really that elite? He wasn't top 10 in the yoyo or 2km.

Weiters was top ten for the beep in his draft year.

Will he be able to find space in a zone where teams will hand over and let other players cover him?

I don't really think he has developed his game from last year. I am not spending a top 5 pick on a player I think will be like the Crows Lynch more so than the Hoff.

Time will tell.

Agree, I find it hard to see how Lukosius will really kick on in the AFL. In his highlights and even in his draft interview he was talking about how he uses his running endurance to burn off opponents and take marks. In the big league he will need to be able to cope with much quicker and seasoned defenders, double-teaming, zoning, much more pressure across the board. He has a few tricks don't get me wrong but I think he will be found out a bit like Schache. Needs to be able to hit contests hard and take contested marks/pack marks.

Did not really have amazing U18 stats either as he should have been kicking bags of goals in a dominant SA team or even at club level where he played alongside Rankine and they won the grand final IIRC.
How many two grab marks does Lukosius take in his highlights? Hopefully that’s not symptomatic of his game.

How similar is he to Riewoldt?

Goes alright Westoff..Ive said it before

Of course Luko will do well...heck its like choosing oysters from a plate..theyre all good. I just like the eyes of Walsh. The eyes say so much.

I cannot 100% remember Volts jnr years with clarity, so comparing the AFL version and the junior version is always hard.

As juniors, Schache Boyd, Patton, McCartin all play nothing like Luko. It will be interesting to see his development.
I just think his football IQ and kicking skills will be amazing at AFL.

Worse mark, better kick. I think Riewoldt was tougher at the contest but maybe Luko runs to better spaces constantly.

In saying that Riewoldt was a rare talent, so that is a high bar to set.
I know player comparisons are hard, but is there anyone out there you can compare Luko too. I have seen nothing of this years kids coming through, other than highlights that everyone has seen

Maybe you're right but IIRC Schache also had/has a good tank and absolutely dominated his U18 carnival taking marks out on the lead. Patton would be a very good forward too if he didn't do his ACL 2 or 3 times.
I just don't see the aggression needed to be a good KPF at the top level like a JK, Cameron, Buddy, Walker, Dixon, Hogan. In saying that I'm sure he will be at the very least a serviceable AFL player.
The aggression comes in how hard he runs into the space and times that movement. They just do not beat him on that front.

After kicking 4 on debut in the SANFL, in a final no less, teams had to plan around him to curtail his influence. He spent this year dealing with the kind of attention he wouldn't see in the AFL for at least 18 months.

I was specifically referring to my assessment of Williams' range. I truly believe he will be an elite ruck, and he's the only obvious one in this draft pool.

I struggle to see him slipping out of the top 30.

Conversely Riewoldt was arguably skinnier coming into the AFL.

I always have seen Riewoldt as a big athlete first and footballer second. To me thats back to front. I will cop flak no doubt but I will never see him as a real champion player. Question is do we want athletes or footballers?

I've flip-flopped on Lukosius so many times recently and the 'aggression' aspect of his game is what has brought that about, but then I recall what i thought when watching him play and the one thing that stood out was just how much ground he covered.

Maybe he'll never be aggressive but maybe he won't have to be. There aren't going to be many players that will be able to keep up with him.
Guy just creates so much separation on his opponent and he does it so quickly and quite often.

I don't think he'll make for what we know as a genuine FF, but he will make for a very good roaming forward flanker. That may be good enough, given how much play he can create for a tall.

Guys like Walsh & Lukosius can make things look easier than they are, just because of how smart they are and how well they read the play and position themselves around the ground.

I popped over for a look see at the Cow's forum the other day....posters already written him off....comparing him to Jack Watts and he'll only end up being a second rate footballer....

Maybe that's because they finally realise they aint gonna get him ;)

If the game does start to open up as most of us along with the AFL want, he's going to be hard to stop.
Max King will be the other player I feel can really come into his own when he develops some mass. Going to be awfully hard to stop him.

There are so many players one wants and for so many reasons, but right now I'll side with needs.
I don't see GC possibly trading, but if they did somehow do something unusual, the notion of getting Rankine & Rozee is too mouth-watering.

Anyway, best stop dreaming and get back to reality; Welcome Sam Walsh :)

Ha ha!! Sour grapes. :D
It would be a different tune entirely if they were holding a top 3 pick!
