Interesting comments from SOS re “when he (Stocker) started to spill out we made contact around pick 13 14 and we’re able to do the deal.

Sounds like Stocker might have been rated in top 10 by SOS and team? Perhaps very highly rated is SOS code for top 10?

Also mentioned bringing in a another midfielder (Stocker) probably a year early, so maybe they rated Stocker higher than the mids in 2019.

Yeah not sold on Port's selections, didn't have Butters or Duursma rated in the first round

Sorry to say, I just don't rate Sturt, a other look at me player, similar to McCarthy, when they should have drafted someone like Stocker

Beg to differ on Sturt. He torched Quaynor in the Grand Final and Quaynor is bloody good and ready to go while Sturt has had bugger all training yet. I'm not sure what you've got against "look at me" forwards. Last year you couldn't warm to Stephenson and Rayner. This year the same with Rankine, and now Sturt. Every good forward has "look at me" in them.

And yeah, back on Port, i wouldn't mind their picks for them if they were 10,15 and 20 but not 5, 10 and 15. Think they did poorly through trade/draft period.......again.

Lets not fire all the bullets early - enjoying this strange feeling of not being able to see any spuds on our list for the first time in 20 years.....
We got to pinch ourselves mate...it can't be real. Two decades of blokes getting games that shouldn't. Finally a list that doesnt make one wince after ten names.

In 3 years be will be envious too

I think he already is envious, that's why he was moaning to anybody that would listen before the draft that we must not be given a priority pick. He can't develop talent and hates it when others do. His mob are on the way down and I for one will enjoy their ride and exposure of the limited coaching skills he has.

Playing devil's advocate, I suppose the worst-case cost of the Stocker trade is if Adelaide finish at the very point end in 2019, and our pick is then (say) 15-18; the risk is that this may not be sufficient in a trade for a Josh Kelly (for example), whereas 'our' pick (2-6?) is more likely to be. Weaker draft = less currency, too.

Many have said that it's a free hit given the first pick will be traded next year regardless - but its value as a bargaining chip is now of course directly tied to Adelaide's fortunes, rather than ours.

Having said that, 2020's first round pick would be likely to play a role here, too, so it's not solely in the hands of Adelaide's pick to get a big fish trade done, of course. Based on what we've seen, Silvagni would likely find a way to get business done, regardless!

tl;dr - Stocker trade has potentially very high opportunity cost IF it eventuates that we miss out on a big fish due to later pick, IF Adelaide excel in 2019.

Depth still is our biggest issue going forward. So we can still use plenty of draft assets to add to the list.

The only way we get draft asset rich is by having too much depth and clubs giving us decent picks for our depth players who can't get games.

That's where we need to be in 3-5 years time.

This might sound stupid, and it is certainly not the primary reason the live pick trade was done.

But a nice little side benefit might be some brownie points from AFL house. Carlton coming to the party and making the AFL's new baby of live draft pick swapping exciting may have some benefit for us one day down the track (yes probably not, they hate us, but I'm trying to be optimistic).

Just watching the reaction from radio, online forums, reddit etc. This particular trade caused a big uptick in activity and discussion which the AFL (and media outlets) would love.

In one of the video interviews after tonight's selections SOS stated that Carlton rated Stocker in the top 10.

edit: at the 1.05 mark

Main board are hilarious.

We've ended up with a player that we clearly rated close to top 10 for a pick-swap yet somehow it has the potential to be the "worst trade in history".

Let's arrive at our destination a different way:

Let's say Adelaide had Pick 13.

Let's say we did the same pick-swap of 2019 first rounders for pick 13 during the trade period.

The calculator has us winning this (on points, I know..) even if Adelaide rise back up to 4th and we go 15th ! In fact we would need to finish in the bottom 2 whilst Adelaide win the flag to really lose it..

Doubt anyone bats an eyelid.

Then we pickup Stocker at 13, well within his expected range of 10-18.

Nobody bats an eyelid.

But nope, worst trade in history because it was "pick 19" (which is wasn't - it was Stocker.)

People can't seem to get over the pick number - even when it's clearly irrelevant.

That sounds stupid.........:D

But really you make a good point because it would be a nice change for us to be in the good guys camp with AFL
