Toast Welcome to Carlton Tomas Bugg (Rookie)

You can't praise SOS one minute then be complaining the next.

Cant agree with this at all. Just because i personally really like SOS and love what he and the recruiting team managed on night 1 of the draft, doesn't mean i have to agree or support every decision after.

Thomas and Hugh will have my support like all our players but i don't agree and no one at Carlton should be beyond criticism or scrutiny.

I agree ..the point was he cant be brilliant and dumb. Its a matter of looking at the whys and wherefores. These rookies are there because we have no choice but to fill a certain list length and we already have enough draft pick youth.

One can be a genius and still make mistakes or have flaws to their strategy.

I posted before the RD that i hoped we picked up an overlooked player from the ND and that i was sick of seeing clubs like Sydney especially, pump out players picked in the RD. I was hoping to pick a rough diamond along with a mature player or two.

Like last year when we topped up with O'Sea, Shaw and Mullett, this feels a little the same, a lot of people trying to justify the move, i hope they do well but i hope we use the next few months to audition for the last spot, which we have to March to fill.

Looking through today's rookie draft, it is probably one of the more uninspiring rookie drafts I have seen for awhile. So many clubs redrafting their own delisted players.

As much as the ND was a 'super' draft, the quality seemed to fall away relatively quickly after the 3rd round & many of those left undrafted clearly had some significant knocks on them. Hawthorn reached for 30 year old Tim Mohr in a measure of the dearth of leftover talent.

On one hand, I've utterly no time for the kind of vindictive, machismo bullshit that Tom has done in the past. I've called him a thug, because he's behaved like a thug. On the other, we don't really know if he's capable of being an AFL level player without the niggle, because he's always had it.

Welcome to Carlton, Tom. Misgivings is not my attitude to your selection, as I can see why you've been picked up. Just, play the ball, protect your teammates, and become one of us. That's all I can ask. Be a player we as fans can be proud of, every time you pull on the jumper.

A controversial choice it seems. I don't see the problem with taking a punt on Bugg with a rookie selection. A 25 y.o. who has played 96 games for teams that are further along than we are, surely he can't be all bad. He fits that mid-20s age bracket where we're a bit thin.
A lot of posters crave players with some "mongrel", Bugg seems to have that as well.

Does everything right as a pressure forward except kick straight. If you can somehow fix that you’ll have a 30 goal a year player on your hands. Also the attitude talk is rubbish, he made one stupid decision with Mills but has never been suspended aside from that and is an excellent trainer. If anything I thought he lost his whole playing on the edge shtick after that punch.

One point I must concede: if it came to a choice between keeping Lamb and drafting Bugg, I would sooner have hung onto Lamb. He had earned his niche in the list and played a certain role in the team. I liked him.
May well be a case of half the money outlayed for the more or less same result. And lets face it if he hadnt clocked a bloke he would likely be doing ok at his old club still.

This what i also thought.....wont be much init at all
  • 2018 SEASON AVERAGE
    GAMES PLAYED 18
    • KICKS9.9
    • HANDBALLS4.6
    • DISPOSALS14.6
    • MARKS2.9
    • HIT-OUTS0.0
    • TACKLES2.2
    • GOALS0.4
    • AFL FANTASY57.1
    • -
    • why disrupt the list further?
    • can we keep both?
    • Bugg might be more effective, more direct and possibly kick more goals - or be more effective in defense?
    • they both have similar history ....not a huge upgrade

He's on the list now. Hopefully he can step up and provide us with some maturity and mongrel. Has ability

He can provide pressure up forward and support Charlie McGovern & McKay it's a huge positive

So people are praising this pick because he "finally" brings "mongrel" to the side, yet Jed Lamb is the exact same type of player and was actually a very popular figure within the playing group.

To be honest it's a better pick than Goddard at least. I can actually see Bugg playing a role when required.

I dunno if Lamb really had a lot of mongrel. He was pretty faux tough and a basic pest like Ballantyne or Lindsay Thomas. Lamb was also career flanker, and he wasn't particularly good at it. He was too slow to play on forward flank, and too slight and low production to play off half-back. Someone like Simpson can succeed in that position despite their size due to his courage and intensity - Jed didn't have that.

Bugg's more a mid/forward who's also capable of playing in defence, where he started for GWS. I'd say he's at a similar level to Kerridge, but maybe slightly cleaner at ground-level. Has some smarts, but I think the general consensus is he was seen by both GWS and Melbourne as a role-player, who can do a tagging job, be pushed through the midfield rotations or occupy a flank.

I agree on Goddard though. Didn't impress me a heap in his underage year - just looked like a decent intercept tall with a better athletic profile than most. Game sense is a little all over the place, and has already had a spate of injuries in his short career so far. Would have preferred we looked at other depth options, or even traded up in the draft to grab some someone like Koschitzke.

IMHO Bugg is an AFL ready player reasonable footballer and with 93 games experience too , someone wanting desperately to redeem himself for a past indiscretion which was reprenshensable. He’ll give his absolute best for the opportunity and we’ll be happy Silvagni gave him a fresh start.

I think we should try disassociate Bugg's onfield behaviour with his off field personality. David Rhys-Jones was no shrinking violet as a player, but is honestly one of the nicest and friendly ex-players i have had the pleasure of chatting to.

We can condemn his previous on-field acts without condemning him as a person. He does strike me as someone who is very remorseful for what he has done in the past, and is working very hard to make amends.

I hope this isn't going to be rolled out everytime the club does something which some supporters don't agree with. People need to be realistic about how minimal Walls' role at the club is.

Nope, but I said it when he started training with us and I know it was Walls' opinion that we needed more aggression. Stephen Silvagni is his own man, so I'm not saying he was forced to pick Bugg, but I think it's a view that's held by some of your older heads around the club. That's all.
