It hasn’t happened in a while, but in the early and mid-’90s it had become something of a regular occurrence for couples to be seen having sex in the SkyDome Hotel windows while a game was being played, in full view of binocular-toting fans...........

The (now) Peppers on Waymouth was infamous for something similar... a popular location for "film crews" specialising in a particular genre. Just ask those working in the CFS building across the road!

The artist impressions actually look s**t I don't get it at all.
Someone will get public money to run a private enterprise whereby the profits are for shareholders and the losses are socialised.

Basically typical Cons/Libs/Tory behaviour.

By 2025, the hotel will be making significant losses, and the SMA will be claiming to be struggling to repay the debt. And guess what will happen:

1. The SMA will want an increased share of revenue as part of the stadium deal with the AFL clubs; and
2. Food and beverage prices at the ground will increase at a faster rate than they do now.

With the Intercontinental nearby, and a new hotel being built as part of the Riverbank redevelopment, this idea from the SMA and SA government is pointless. When the SMA and Liberal party get together, evidently nothing good comes of it.

Some dodgy bugger is making a fortune.

The Riverbank hotel was an idea floated by Hamilton-Smith without any interest, but aside from existing stuff like the Intercontinental (and the Playford, Stamford, Mayfair, Oaks), there's the hotel in the Casino expansion, a Quest Hotel on North, Travelodge on Bentham, Tribe on Wakefield, Vibe on Flinders, Indigo on Market, Westin next to the GPO, plus a bunch of serviced appartment type buildings in various stages of approval and construction; The bottom of The Adelaidean on Frome is going to be a Crowne Plaza opening in 2020; and for the luxury end of town the crane went up this month to start work on Adelaide's first 5 star, the Sofitel, next to the TAFE on Currie, while a W Hotel is rumoured to be a tenant of the 74KW tower (corner of Currie & KW) that is still a few years away.

They're just trying to jump on a long rolling money train someone else started, and are guaranteed to fall off when it turns out they started years too late and don't actually have a market anyway.

Not just that. How often has any proposal ever been on budget? It will balloon out like all things. Ie Royal Adelaide hospital. We the tax payers will no doubt foot the bill in some way. Just another stupid idea to waist money on something not needed.

No doubt the footy clubs won't see a cent.
Personally i think its a horrible idea on so many fronts and hope it doesn't get up.

"o you've grown your own pie in the gameday village, we'll take over that and give you a much smaller revenue stream, but don't you dare ask for any money from our hotel! Go out and grow your own revenue!"

Unless a stadium is in the middle of nowhere, like Footy Park was I'm not going to want to want to stay right at the stadium. With the possible exception if it was like the SkyDome hotel REH mentions. And make it extra unlikely to ever want to stay at a hotel connected to a sports ground if we weren't playing there.

There'd be enough interest for the 20 non-Showdown games to fill then. Add a few finals, a test match and some concerts and there's 35-40 days a year it'd be profitable. I wish the model would stand up. Then I'd say 'Go for it, take that profit and reduce your drain on the AFL clubs, since you've a regular other income stream'. It won't be though. We can all see 5 years after opening Adelaide based there and the rest as office space. The SANFL old boys providing the Crows a way out of their West Lakes white elephant at taxpayers expense.

John Culshaw from Majestic Hotels told FIVEaa’s Leon Byner on Monday:

“This really crosses the line.

“The government’s role is to enable a platform for business, a fair and level playing field where you can look at your future, invest in your future… what this does, it’s taking public land and leveraging off the public balance sheet to fund in a situation where there’s others.

“People have put their lives on the line and are working towards a future in this state in tourism. I’m just flabbergasted by this. Governments should understand what their role is -- their role is to enable business to get on with the job. I’ve just had a little bit of legal advice on this…”

“What they are tyring to do is slip a hotel in under the cover of that [Adelaide Oval Redevelopment and Management] Act. If a hotel development was put up at the time that act was proposed, I doubt it would have got there. They are trying to slip one in.

“I’m flabbergasted at the audacity of this government… I pay a $1.5 million a year in rates and land tax and I’ve been paying it for many years as do others to support this state and support this government. Are they going to pay land tax? Are they going to pay council rates?”

I don't want to be one of Bob Francis's infamous BANANAs (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything) but what's the point of it? And why is government getting involved in the motel business?

By the timelines I heard yesterday it turns Adelaide Oval into a construction site for half the football season and that's assuming it runs on schedule. If it's anything like the Festival Plaza refit, it could take years to complete.

I am extremely pro development. If it were up to me I'd dig up half the useless parklands. But there's just something extremely smelly about this. Maybe it's my blind hatred for the SMA and their price gouging, maybe it's a feeling that the Oval is now done, leave it alone for a while, maybe cause it looks s**t and it's a stupid concept....dunno, but I hate it.

It's because we all know that they are going to find a way for it to advantage the Crows and stitch Port.
