The timing of those two tests are odd. Just as people start to get over cricket, are watching the Australian Open and thinking ahead to the footy seasons CA somehow thinks its a grand idea to end the summer with two tests against a lowly opponent. No one will go to the Brisbane test but at least Canberra will have the novelty factor and all the public servants will be back from their Christmas breaks.

They would have scheduled them prior to the Indian tests, but Sri Lanka are currently hosting England.
A day night test over the Australia Day period should be enough of a novelty factor to draw people in I think.

That is true, but you're probably talking about hundreds of millions of dollars difference between the bid they accepted and a FTA only bid. That can buy a lot of junior cricket sets.
That's not to say CA made the right call, but it's not quite as easy as simply saying "we only want FTA".

$200 million for a few short form games plus the occasional BBL game on Fox isn't exactly a terrible deal. Especially when you get games on 7 instead of 10.

10 do a better job with sport than 7 do and it may not be a terrible deal money wise but it's a disgraceful deal in terms of robbing the game of FTA exposure.
The head honchos at CA that agreed to this deal should be hanging their heads in shame but they won't care as long as they get their bonuses for securing the biggest tv rights deal in terms of dollars, screw the majority of the Australian public that now can't watch ODIs and T20s because they don't have Foxtel.
Why should sport automatically be something that is still available for free in the modern era?

Because I'm a cricket fan, not a capitalist or marketing graduate. Sport on free-to-air TV isn't free, it's paid for by advertising. So the question is, why should we pay more for something now than we used to, what's the justification for the fan (we know what the justification is for Foxtel and CA executives). To paraphrase Bill Hicks, we need to quit putting a goddamn dollar figure on every ******* thing on the planet.
Because the matches in question are on the anti-siphoning list and thus the minister believes they should be on FTA tv.
A loophole has been found that enables them to be put behind a paywall and that loophole needs to be closed.
I have foxtel but I still can understand why people are shitty here, you could make the case the anti siphoning list is no longer feasible but that's a different duscussion the reality is the list is there right now and foxtel ca and seven colluded to bypass the list meant to protect fans.
If those in charge decide the list has no place in this current era of streaming services then so be it, change the rules and deal with any political fallout that comes with it but making rules and then allowing multiple separate media groups to collude to bypass them defeats the purpose of the list while allowing the government to say it's still protecting the fans when it clearly didn't.
