Well, people lazily overlook or forget the number of talented stars they had beyond Wayne Carey.

Duck was obviously the superstar and top guy, but they were not a one man team.
They were an exceptional team, yet come away from the 90's with two flags just like the Crows who were no where near as good as them. North were also dead set lucky the Bombers didn't play them in 1999 and for all that talent they would only have one flag to show for it? North should've won 3 flags at least in the 90's.

All in one team.

They were an amazing team and deserved their Premierships, just as North did.

They over achieved without Modra in either Premiership team. North and West Coast were the best teams of the 90's. North should've won three, but were lucky to win two!

I loved the 1990's. Miss those days for sure. Wayne Carey, Plugger, Modra and Ablett and much more. Oh yes Darren Jarman as well, the list goes on.

If you don't want to know the score look away now.

riiiggght on the tip of my toungue

Grand Finals are different. It's all could have's would have's in any case. If Carlton can beat thgem, a team which were flogged twice in the home and away season, why couldn't north. North lost twice in round 2 then in round 17 in that shootout. The Roos lost by roughly 35 and 28 points to the dons while the blues lost by about 8 goals and 13 goals.

North were always going to win imo. And after losing in 98 would be very hard to beat.

If North kicked straight in the 98 Grand final............

Vardy - goal sneak
Bond - similar mould
Connell - exceptional

They had so many weapons and more than these guys mentioned. A very good team. In 97 they won without Riccuito and Modra who went down injured. He won the coleman medal that year. Modra also didn't play in the 1998 Grand final.

If you want to explore the rewriting of history, it probably pans out a bit differently if the current double chance rules were in place back then.

For one thing, North’s first finals loss in 93, as a young team versus a finals hardened West Coast becomes a double chance, not elimination.

They were better than both Essendon and Carlton in 93.

Having said that, find me a player/coach/fan that is unhappy with their 2 Premierships because they didn’t win 3. It is hard enough to win one without the constraints that the NMFC was facing at the time.

98 was the best team that we had. Didn’t win.

97 could have won but injuries and recovery from injuries to Carey and McKernan meant we never fired on all cyclinders.

93 team was one of those young teams on the up that could just rip through opponents when they were on. Best percentage and points for in the comp. Got eliminated by a more experienced finals side in West Coast whod finished 6th. That said, only 1.5 games separated top and 7th! Bombers finished top with 13.5 wins! If we’d had a double chance who knows.

Anyway. As someone who was at both flags and also 1998 and hasn’t seen a grand final since, anyone complaining about ONLY winning 2 has rocks in their head. They’re NOT easy to win.

Agreed. 99 made up for 98 and 2000 made up for 99 for Essendon. West Coast in 92 and 2006 also made amends.

Had to revive this thread as seeing all the past games from the 90's being replayed on Fox Footy has reignited my taste buds for the great Kangaroos outfit. The campaigners beat us from 7th place in a 97 qualifier in a spicy Sunday night encounter with the King nailing 7 out of 11 majors. Good game, frenetic pace and some hard knocks in that one. The year before they dumped us out of the finals in the same game, only they were 2nd this time and we were 7th. Brett Allison booted 7 goals.

In 1996 I believe it was round 17 at the G on a Friday night and Carey kicked 11 as the Kangas destroyed the dees 28.15 to 11.04.

North Melbourne helped the decade that delivered in a great way. Can't forget that come back in the 97 semi's against the Eagles too.

God bless you North Melbourne. Sheer beauty.

Roos probably under-achieved given how good their side was.

Should have won 98, I reckon we would have won 94 had we not been screwed by the umpires and kicked s**t in the prelim final.

I don't think we underachieved like the Bombers with one flag from their very good late 90s/early 00s side, but we could have won more.

Have to agree north did underachieve in the 1990s, should have been 4 flags. It’s very disappointing.

They got lucky we lost Hird in 1999 otherwise would've been one.

93 we had Essendon and Carlton covered but we came up against a battle hardened West Coast who were too strong for us. Essendon of 93 had a young side who clicked when it counted where as we timed our run poorly and form/injuries hampered us.
94 prelim the umps gave us a pasting and who knows what may have happened against West Coast the following week. Considering the sea sawing finals both us and Geelong played that year we may have copped a belting too.
95 Carlton too good
96 Sydney was the best team that year and we beat them on the day
97 Cruelled by injury
98 Kicked poorly against Adelaide
99 Montys once Carlton beat Essendon

93, 96, 98 and 99 we were genuine chances to win the thing and came up short 50% of the time
