One of the reasons we won was because one of their role players - Levi Greenwood - was simply unable to curb Shuey in the second half, and our role player - Hutchings - limited Sidebottom to his worst game for the year.

Our midfield being ranked 15th is actually about right, because our whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Tactical innovation got us the flag, not individual brilliance from our midfield brigade.
I think that's selling the players short, shuey and sheed both absolutely played brilliant games. No we don't have the best midfield but to say ours is 15th is just laughable. Worst case I think would be about 6th, our midfield is easily better than Bris, Carl, Ess, Freo, Gc, Hawks, North, Port, Stk, Wb, and based on exposed performance is probably better than Crows, Cats, and maybe even Sydney's now.

Yeo, Shuey and Gaff are 3 genuinely elite mids, Redden has returned back to A grade level and Sheed is about to reach his peak and just showed he can also play like an A grader.

Yes Shuey and Sheed played the games of their lives (according to Champion Data, it was Shuey's best game ever), but Champion Data rate just on individual performances and not team synergy or tactical nous. I don't think Redden is an A-grader but that's okay, he definitely did his job to perfection in 2018.

This is why Simmo has been an outstanding coach - he managed to get the wins (and the biggest one of them all on the last Saturday in September) despite having a midfield brigade that regularly lost clearances, barely laid tackles, and wasn't that good at the coal face. We won games we had no right to win on paper, because our game plan did the trick.

People should stop getting offended by the pure statistical analysis that Champion Data offered - as someone quoted, stats should be like a drunk person on a lamp-post - leaned on for support, not illumination.

Legend, thanks amazingjoshy & thanks for the tip ;)

Turns out it wasn't a very insightful article though. He knew the writing was on the wall, was a little hard to take, hoped to have been picked up by another team, now he's playing in the sanfl again.

He didn’t sound bitter though, so it’s hard to understand where all this talk about him having a bad attitude comes from.

You can’t really read too much into a puff piece to determine what went on behind the sciences though.

For mine more telling was the fact no one else drafted him.

I’d like to know what goes on behind the sciences too, I mean are the white coats compulsory and do you automatically get the pocket pen holders or do you have to buy your own? :tearsofjoy::D

Not AFL related and originally posted 9 months ago, but still a great piece of work from Chris Jones at ESPN for those that haven't read it. Provides some nice insight into what goes on behind closed doors regarding medical clearances and conditioning at a professional sports club.

Can a 44-year-old man cut it in the Premier League?

"The Eagles, whose premiership window looks narrower than Collingwood's given their reliance on star veterans Josh Kennedy and Shannon Hurn"
This quote from Twomey of AFL.com is another example of sloppy, ignorant reporting. Yes, Hurn is an important cog in the defence but we also have McGovern, Barrass, Sheppard, Duggan and Cole who form a pretty handy unit. JK is irreplaceable but he has a strong supporting cast plus the developing and promising O Allen, Waterman and Brander. Wrote us off altogether last year and are getting in early again this year.

Don't collingwood rely on Goldsack and pendlebury? Every team has its veterans.

Collingwood have a much harder draw this year. They're going to have to find 2 or 3 extra wins against 2018s top 8 just to break even.

IS that the same Kennedy that never stood up in big games? Love how they flip flop so quickly.

A point missed by many.
