Crows are a cancer. They attached themselves to Footy Park back before it was the shithole it became rather than some vacant land elsewhere. Now they are looking to move in on AO after its well established.

Just tumours waiting for the next thing to come along then suck the life out of it.

You don't need all those parklands, surely...?

Adelaide Crows consider shifting from Football Park home to new base in Adelaide’s parklands

The Adelaide Crows are considering shifting from their long-term West Lakes home and building a new headquarters in the North Adelaide parklands, on the opposite side of the River Torrens to the Adelaide Zoo.

The 1.6ha Adelaide City Council Nursery site, at War Memorial Drv’s eastern end, is among sites earmarked and it is understood talks are continuing with the Adelaide City Council and Liberal State Government.

It is understood the Crows also are open to other city sites, such as the previously speculated Adelaide Aquatic Centre and a redeveloped Memorial Drive tennis complex.

The Advertiser has been told the Crows are considering a new multistorey headquarters, with associated offices, gym, indoor training facilities and clubrooms.

This was the paper edition follow up on page 3 today. Headline is the paper one - online is different.

Council may aid Crows' city bid
A bid by the Adelaide Crows to build a new headquarters in the North Adelaide parklands could get the support of the Adelaide City Council, if the footy powerhouse takes on a particular site. While the Crows said there had not been a formal application or approach, city councillors were last night confidentially briefed on the situation. It came in the wake of The Advertiser yesterday revealing The Crows are considering shifting from their long-term West Lakes home to a location closer to Adelaide Oval — with the 1.6ha council Nursery site at War Memorial Drive’s eastern end among sites earmarked for a new multistorey headquarters, with associated offices, gym, indoor training facilities and clubrooms.

Other potential sites include the Adelaide Aquatic Centre and a redeveloped Memorial Drive tennis complex. The Advertiser understands that, from the council’s perspective, the former is the preferred option, especially since the council loses significant money each year on the ailing centre. Councillor Anne Moran said it would be a wise decision, especially if the council could keep the facility open to the public in some way. “What we are going to have to face is that the Aquatic Centre is reaching the end of its life,” she said. The Advertiser understands that senior member of council administration share Cr Moran’s view about a preferred location — with the Nursery site considered off the table. If the Aquatic Centre site was chosen, the Crows would have the pick of four nearby ovals. Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said no concrete proposal had been brought to the council or herself............ Cr Robert Simms said the parklands “shouldn’t be commercialised in this way”. “I’m sick to death of private enterprise trying to sink their teeth into our parklands,” he said.

So why is a classic NIMBY in Anne Moran and others like her on the council supportive of the crows going to the aquatic centre??? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

The council has a huge maintenance cost with the Adelaide Aquatic Centre - ACC. With the big stuff moving down to Marion to the SA Aquatic Centre and all those serious training squads moving down there, the ACC has lost a huge revenue stream over the last 7 years as also state championships and schools championships are also no longer held there. And given the age, 50 next year - significant capital repairs aren't far away to maintain its quality and regulatory standards.

Its losing between $400k and $500k a year which isn't that large given its a community asset, but it will probably get bigger as less learn to swim schools are attending plus the Marion Centre effect and capital repairs bill goes up. If they do sell it, or lease it to the crows, then they also get rid of a whole lot of staff off their books as well, which might be something else the council likes.

The crows dont have the money to redevelop it compared to an easier build on a greenfield site and that's why their bullshit pre depreciation, pre $690k Adelaide Oval fee, pre $420k crows SANFL licence fee, etc profit, will bite them in the bum with their fans demanding it as "we are always making million dollar profits."

Unless they get some of their wealthy supporters to become big benefactors - which hasn't happened for the crows yet. They might be prepared to go out and take a big loan and buy it/renovate it. They would get a few million for the building at West Lakes, but the key is they don't own the land it sits on, so they aren't getting the land appreciation $$, just selling a 9 year old depreciated building $$$.

Blows my mind that this idea can be green lit. Home teams will dress up as superheroes for the 2019 AFLW season.

God forbid the ladies game does something to bring in money. They don’t have heritage to protect, they SHOULD be doing this.

"The AFLW is a legitimate competition" they say as the make secret proposals to turn the players into marketing gimmicks.

To be fair at least they've realised it was dumb.

I thought the AFLW games were played at smaller venues like Princes Park and Western Oval. No such thing as a free lunch I suppose. Be interesting to see if the more povvo Docklands tenants get coerced into doing this in the AFL season - "It's Superhero Month at Marvel Stadium!!"

Final comment goes to this person...

I've had a change of heart about the development of training facilities by the Crows in the parklands somewhere.

We should also ride along with them for our gain. (Bout time they led the way for something)

The council and government could not say yes to just one club and not the other.

I actually think it would be a great idea for Ports to also build something near AO. By this I don't mean a full on training facility or moving from Alberton.

What I think would be great is to have a large club rooms for supporters to head back to after matches and also host indoor training areas for GameDay. GameDay village would return too.

No one goes back to Alberton after a game anyway and this will be another connection people can have with the club.

Thoughts? Changes?

Club rooms for just after matches wouldn't be financially viable.
