Preview The Home Ground Factor in Finals is hugely overrated

What has crept in is opinions that non Melbourne teams should have had home grand finals where they deserved it from home and away qualification. So it’s not a simple they won x we won x equation.

But then there’s the whole discussion whether home and away is a true reflection of deserving, compromised as it is

A decent interstate team (non-Vic) has a high chance of finishing top 2, given the advantage they have of accumulating wins at home against visiting teams during the season. It is often easy to predict at the start of the season that a certain non-vic team will earn two home finals... and thus very likely make the grand final.

Vic v Vic grand finals are thus rare.

How many wins do you need to make top 2? 15, 16 most seasons. We get 10 with home ground advantage. We have to win a bunch of games on the road to get there.

Playing 10 home and 10 away games helps you finish towards the middle.

5 home, 12 neutral and 5 away games makes it easier to finish at either end of the ladder.

i would take a home final over travelling any day of the week.

Home Finals 11wins-4 losses 73%
Away Finals 7 Wins-14 losses 33%

Surely when comparing the number of non Victorian teams that have won a grand final to Victorian teams that have won a grand final, you can't use games where there were two Victoria teams or two non Victorian teams playing each other . In each case there would be no home ground advantage.
I'm not. I'm comparing Vic vs Non Vic GFs. At the time of that post it was 8 wins a piece. It's now 9-8 in favour of Non Vics.

The OP is about home ground advantage. There can't be a home ground advantage unless there is a Vic and Non Vic team in the GF. Currently that is 6-3 in favour of Vic teams

What happened the other 8 times a Victorian team met a non-Victorian team in the GF?
In the last 16 GF's there was only Vic and Non Vic Teams met 9 times to give a 6-3 result in the last 17 years thy have met 10 times to give a 6-4 result

Lets see how you truly feel about it (if you can be unbiased for just a moment)

This season 2019 WCE will travel just 4 times for the season. Those away games will be against 14th, 10th, 12th and 6th. Nice. Happy days.

They get handed this draw after being top 2-4 throughout 2018.

To start the season the AFL gives them...
Rnd 1 Perth
Rnd 2 Perth
Rnd 3 Perth
Rnd 4 Perth
Rnd 5 Perth
Rnd 6 Perth
Rnd 7 Perth

Sweet leg up to kick off the season.

...and to finish off season going into finals they will get this

Rnd 16 Perth
Rnd 17 Perth
Rnd 18 Perth
Rnd 19 Perth
Rnd 20 Perth
Rnd 21 Perth
Rnd 22 Perth

Home finals.... Perth
GF..... Perth.

10 games straight in Perth.

If WCE cannot win a flag with that assistance they are kidding themselves.

Thats the 2010 season. An absolutely disgraceful gift that should never be allowed to happen again.

If over half their games are against fellow Perth based teams who are competing for the top 4, then yes, that's fine by me.

We’ve gone around in circles about this previously kranky but let’s look at this season as an example. Richmond could likely play fellow mcg Tennant hawthorn in their first final and then Collingwood in the prelim. So for those 2 finals Richmond’s advantage for finishing top is nothing, naught, zero. The eagles however will have a serious home ground advantage in both their finals with fellow Tennant Freo out of the finals.
Do we complain? No, it’s all swings and roundabouts.

Why would you complain? In this scenario, you don't have to travel and in the end will get them at you home ground, so they have to travel.

LoL

If you thought the Pies 2010 fixture was a gift, you should check out 1977

All 22 games in Melbourne!! Even avoided a trip to CatPark!!

Compare it to the premier league, another competition where a large number of teams come from the one city.

In 2018/19 there are six London clubs in the premier league

Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Fulham, West Ham and Palace

According to your inane logic, Fulham playing Arsenal ‘away’ is a win for Fulham because it is in London!

How would the Eagles feel about only playing 3 games with an actual Home Ground Advantage!?

Doggies supporters rave about their 2016 fairytale because they had to travel to Perth and Sydney.

Hawthorn supporters rave about their 2015 premiership because they had to go to Perth twice (final H&A plus first week)

If playing away is no big deal then why are these supporters claiming it is?

It is easier to have 10 games with a full blown advantage, and then thanks to ground rationalisation in Melbourne, they don’t get 10 proper away games...instead getting random venues like Darwin, Tassie which aren’t their opponents actual home ground.

No surprise that since 2000, when Etihad stadium came in, that non-Melbourne teams now dominate the top 2 H&A ladder positions and thus home finals.
