Honestly I'm more devastated for him than anything to do with our prospects.

While undoubtedly a much missed presence on-field, one player, especially in defense, shouldn't make such a difference that we pin all our hopes and dreams on them. We have to be able to cover them.

But his leadership and footy brain are seriously impressive, and along with all that, he seems an absolutely upstanding young man so it just really, really sucks for him.

If people are gunna say we're bottom 2 on the back of losing Doc then we were likely gunna be bottom 2 anyway.

Losing Doc in 2018 was relatively minor in our 2018 season. He's not Judd, Carey or Lockett, he's an intercept marking-rebound defender .

Nincompoops.

That's garbage. Docherty is probably the most important player to a team in the whole league. His drive and speed off half back is all we have.

As shit as this is, the sky isn't falling and SOS shouldn't be sacked for the 2019 first round pick swap with the Crows. We have a team of 44 players, and if one guy going down means it's time for a wooden spoon again, we have far bigger issues than a single trade - it means the whole list is shit. Fortunately, the whole list isn't shit and neither are we trying to bust into the top 4 next year. So keep the horses on hold.
took less than 2 hours to reach "career over" insanity before settling back to a calmer approach like this one - kudos shan.....

In the late 1990’s John Elliott said something stupid to offend an indigenous person. So some guy came in and put a curse on us.

Is there any way to reverse such a thing?

MY HORSES ARE GONE

I will be frank and say I almost get more annoyed at some of the reactions to this terrrible news than the news itself.
Its footy. It happens. To every Club. Its not fair or unfair. Its just the way it is.
Someone else will step up and become a star.
How's that "Learning Empathy" program working out for you?

I dont think we really need to. We recuited Nic Newman in a similar role, Simpson is still going strong, LOB now has a year under his belt and was tracking well towards the end of the year, Thomas can play off the HBF line, and Weitering plays his best footy as an intercept and rebound defender, and not as a 1 on 1 'gorilla' defender.

Weitering, Plowman, Jones (he's our only remaining bigger bodied defender), Marchbank and Simpson are all largely locks down back (if fit and in form). That 6th smaller rebounding defender can come from one of Newman, Thomas or LOB.

Dont get me wrong, I'd much rather have Docherty in that role over any of the three names mentioned.

If one of the 4 talls (Jones, Weits, Marchy or Plow) go down, we have MacReadie and McGovern to fill in. We could also play Gov or Macreadie as a tall, and release Weitering as a rebounding loose man in defence. I reckon if Weits is freed up to intercept, rebound and attack we'll see the 2016 version of him, and not the 2018 version that was low on confidence. He's still a little undersized to play man on man, and plays his best footy when he's intercepting and rebounding from D50.

As a club, we can make do, but it's far from ******* ideal.

And it's just shit for Doc. Utterly shit. Beyond shit. He must be devastated. I know I am for him.

As you said, sh1t news for Doc, but I am not concerned about the backline, as we have options, especially with adding guys like Newman as well as seeing some good signs from the likes of LOB and Willo.

But, given these guys would be shifting back, from further up the field, it makes sense to add another senior body, whether that be a Sam Fisher or another recently delisted young player. The upside, we may unearth another talent

****. Me. Dead.

Shitthouse luck. Hope he's doing okay mentally.

We're hopefully better able to cover his absence next season than we were last, provided we don't undergo a similar injury crisis across our entire backline and our midfield develops to the point where we can decrease back fifty entries to a reasonable level, but that shouldn't and doesn't diminish what is such a blow. Doc out, again. Bugger.

Shit news , my condolences to Doc , the club and the fans

Here’s hoping he comes back even stronger in 2020.
Comes in here offering sympathy and hope ... what a strange cat

No!

I was feeling rather upbeat about next season, especially with Doc leading the back line as an on field coach after his apprenticeship last year.

Now I'm shattered, can only imagine how Sam is feeling.

This is a devastating blow for our club in 2019.

The only silver lining I can find is if we improve next year, then look out 2020 when Doc is back.
