And here you are right on queue...

The club's medical staff have been disastrous all year, that's a fact (I'm guessing they're welcome here). They sent players out there this year when they were clearly not fully recovered. So give me one good reason to think otherwise re Doc's rehabilitation program?
They reviewed the department as part of a whole footy department review, made changes and implemented them. Even got Russell. Shit can still just happen.

Yeah no doubt it'll be better come next year. But sadly, Russell wasn't around earlier and the review was done post season. Before that is what's relevant here as Doc began his rehab program long before these things were put into place.

You’re a numpty if you think they haven’t been testing and gradually increasing work loads etc and that his rehab program wasn’t reviewed. Dochs a pro. His rehab would’ve been fine and certainly not rushed. Sam Rowe came back from his acl fine. The evidence that the club suffers more acls or repeat acls doesn’t add up. There’s no evidence to suggest that we’ve mismanaged anything. It’s far more likely Doch is an unlucky dude that’s just gotta wait another 9-12 months.

Understand you’re shattered but I suggest you focus your emotions elsewhere.

Horrible news. Poor Doc must be totally gutted.

I wonder how Bolton and the group will handle this because this will absolutely take the wind out of the sails of the playing group I would think.
My concern as well

But once they have time to digest it they’ll be fine and No doubt Docs attitude will more than likely inspire the group he’s such a pro and a great leader

I know I've said it already but I'm genuinely shattered right now.

Last year his injury took the wind out of my sails, and it never came back for this season.

Was getting hyped for 2019 and now the wind knocked out of my sails again.

Just hope the boys at the club don't let it get them too down though. Gotta keep soldiering on. Opportunity for someone to stand up and grab with both hands, Willo, Newman, Schumacher etc.

The thing that gets me the most is, so many players come through the AFL system who just don't have the professionalism, dedication, resilience etc to make it... yet this happens to poor old doc who ticks every box you could want in a player.

Doc complete professional in his rehab and return no then you get blokes like Pickett who can't even be trusted to have an end of year break without coming back out of shape (not that I wish it on Pickett either). Just truely a shame and horrible luck for it to happen to someone who gives everything for this club.

On the mend skip. We all love you.

Nuh, can't accept that given the history of Injury and reinjury this year. There is problem that needs more discussion than just bad luck

Honestly I'm more devastated for him than anything to do with our prospects.

While undoubtedly a much missed presence on-field, one player, especially in defense, shouldn't make such a difference that we pin all our hopes and dreams on them. We have to be able to cover them.

But his leadership and footy brain are seriously impressive, and along with all that, he seems an absolutely upstanding young man so it just really, really sucks for him.

Agree with all the above sentiments.

As to our prospects:-

We have Nic Newman, 26 next year with 31 games and 3 years in the system.

Marchbank, an injury interrupted 4 seasons in the system with 35 games should be nearing peak.

Plowman is now 24, 73 games and now fully developed.

Weitering has played 4 seasons, 56 games and should be nearing peak.

MacCreadie and Willo, 3rd season, 8 and 15 games, should be ready to show what they will be able to do at peak, though still a mountain to learn.

SOJ might find a niche down back with 3 seasons and 43 games behind him.

Mitch McGovern can play down back if needs be.

We have LOB with 1 year in the system, 18 games, a more developed body, who should improve.

We have Angus Schumacher with 1 year in the system, a much developed body by the look of preseason reports, who could give us something.

That is 10 potential improvements in our defence from last year with only the loss of Rowe, Byrne and the unmemorable O'Shea, Shaw and Mullett.
[Simpson, Jones and Daisy will not play any better than last year, and although there is no reason to think they will deteriorate, they might].

Our defence should be more resilient next year with the increased back up. Perhaps even more importantly our midfield should be much stronger than last season and this, even more than the natural development of the defence, should reduce the pressure down back.

Finally, Sam was greatly missed last year for the leadership he demonstrated in 2017. We have played a year without him. Necessarily the defenders have learnt (after a fashion) how to play without his leadership. For this reason alone he won't be so badly missed, at least as far as our on-field fortunes are concerned.

off you go then......

Docherty was fit to play last 2 rounds of 2018 season. Was held back
Was as fit as he had ever been
Had no issues with the knee at all and knee apparently felt great.
Was being kept out of full contact drills until after Xmas as a precaution
All checks on knee had shown it had healed perfectly
It is over 12 months since reconstruction.
Happened without any contact etc. My read on it it is just damn unlucky
What else could have been done I don't know

Given the type of person Docherty appears to be I expect him to come back stronger and better than ever. Will still be a massive positive around the club.

Just hope there’s some sort of a positive that can be taken from this a galvanising effect perhaps on the playing group. Doc’s only 25 he can still look forward to captaining a successful side he’s realistically missing out on a developmental year, we should learn a bit about the character of a few guys this year and how they stand up
