They were always going to pick Graham.

So their choice was use 32 to pick Graham and let that last pick slide or do what they did here.

I'm sure someone would have been willing to trade for pick 32. North got a 3rd for 46, Gold Coast could have got a 2nd. So I think they still wanted to be absolutely sure that Adelaide didn't get McLennan.

Anyone watched the afl.com video for this one?

Jeez Suns were desperate to get McLennan. Interesting that they had Valente next on their list who would have made it to them at 27 had they not traded. Then they’d still have 32. I guess they couldn’t know that though.

Great trade for Eagles, could still be fine for Suns as long McLennan is good.

Yep, I've watched both the Suns and Saints videos.

Suns were fine on the night, worked out quickly that Sydney traded in front of their pick to get their hands on McClennan and then went through a reasonable process to work out if he was worth the trade cost to trade back up in front of the Eagles (who are the big winners here, winning the Sydney trade to help Sydney get above GC after the Blakey bid, only to then win a trade with GC to get them back in front of Sydney).

Saints were a complete rabble though in their video, had no clear plan, didn't do any basic maths to work out what they'd be willing to pay to get another mid or late 1st rounder in for a player they wanted, tried to get overs out of anyone to trade with, and had to explain about 5 times to their CEO why Adelaide took the Carlton deal over their own deal. I would have gone into that night with a 2018/2019 draft board (ranking players from both drafts, I know a long way out still for 2019), worked out if there were players we liked like Caldwell and RCD (who they decided they liked late) and worked out that if they got to a certain point in the draft, they were worth trading for, and having a plan for what those trades what have realistically looked like. Amateur hour strikes again at St Kilda.

The Saints didn't impress me, that's for sure. Mainly with the disconnect between the list manager and the recruiter. Those scenarios should be worked out days in advance. CEO butting his head in didn't help either but I'm not sure it was a huge problem.

That said, I wasn't all that impressed with the Suns here. How exactly are they sure that the Swans wanted McLennan? The Swans traded back up to get back near to their original draft position with the Blakey deal, that didn't strike me as an obvious move for a player, no doubt Dew has connections or maybe had now! They thought Melbourne wanted Valente, clearly they didn't. How much can a 185cm back flanker be a needs based pick? The Suns have enough midfielders who can go play half back - Fiorini, Bowes, Ah Chee, Martin etc etc. If you like Valente as a mid he can play half back too!

Easy to say in hindsight but Bobby Hill looked likely to go somewhere in the 4 picks between 23 and 26, so now it's down to 3 picks and if you're patient odds are one of your guys gets through.

For 27 and 32 I'd want to be hearing that the guy is worthy of a first round pick and that he's far more value than taking 2 picks and I'd want the coach on board well ahead of time.

Give a Suns supporters POV on this.

A bloke that wants to come to our club is absolutely worth their weight in gold for us. Has local family and is on the GC for holidays surfing anyway. I like the fact we identified our target and went and got him. As far as the HB position, with Hanley and Harbrow only having a couple of years left and Kolodashnij and Scrimshaw being moved on there is a need for a specialist rebounding HB who was an AA U18 in that position.

Those players you mentioned I would only really want Ah Chee to be playing that role off HB. We want Bowes and Fiorini to be mainly playing through the midfield, and Martin we want in more damaging positions ahead of the ball. It was a steep price, but I think it in the end it will be worth it. For the first time in a while there seems to be some thought in our list building. Not go for the skinny x factor player that Clayton seemed to love.

Gold Coast spent up to get McLennan for sure - but he is a guy that wanted to go there and has family there and seems a good prospect - getting players that actually want to go there is king and imo was well worth the price paid

That's all fair enough, but in that case I'm surprised Dew wasn't fully on board from the get go. Obviously these things are edited for drama so you can't read too much in to it but Dew was asking a lot of questions. Dean Soloman looked like he barely knew who the kid was.
McLennan's manager told them.
Good luck to the kid but I'd probably fire my manager if he got me drafted to the Suns over the Swans.

Coaches and assistant coaches should have very little to no real say on who a club drafts. They should suggest types of players or style of players they want, then shut up and let the experts pick the players.
If Soloman had no real idea about a player, that does not concern me in the slightest.

Yep. their theory was they would regret not doing the live trade if they got to pick 27 and both their next two wants were gone. Whomever was third on their list next, they did not want anywhere near as much as McLennan and Valente. So rather than sit by idle and have it out of their control they decided to pull the trigger and pay the price to ensure they at least got McLennan. This in essence is what live trading brings to draft nights. If you want a draftee bad enough you pay a little over to make sure you get them rather than regret possibly missing out.

Both interesting videos to watch. Liked the conversations between the too head drafters at the gc.

Also liked the saints and the guys reaction to Reid's trade proposal.

Interesting how each of the 3 club's (Inc carlton) do things and how it's worked out.

From about two weeks before the draft there were plenty of articles, and even an interview with McLennan himself, where he said he'd like to be drafted to the Gold Coast.

I'm a little surprised I've read nothing about how McLennan being part of the SA U18 Leadership group might help in the retention of Rankine and Lukosius.

Gold Coast are collecting SA kids at about the same rate Brisbane are collecting Vic Country kids.

Makes sense, there's a lot less go home factor with SA kids, I mean who wants to go back to Adelaide when you've been given the chance to leave?

Spot on how poor St Kilda were with their team (or at least what was shown).

So far GWS Suns and Blues have shiwn they were clear and went after specific targets and committed. Let’s face reality, few people will remember what pick Tigers got Higgins for in 2017 like Lever in 2013. Once you get into the teens and beyond, list management teams should back themselves in hard
