AFL curtain-raisers to be played at MCG and Marvel Stadium as VFL football returns to main stage

AFL football will feature curtain-raisers more regularly in 2019 as the League looks to engage fans and promote state league football.

The Herald Sun understands a series of VFL matches will be played immediately before AFL games next season. The MCG, the home of football, will feature games, as well as the League-owned Marvel Stadium.

And footy will also make a return to featured suburban grounds, with North Melbourne and St Kilda tipped to play matches at their redeveloped Arden Street and Moorabbin bases.

The VFL fixture will be revealed in detail later today but it’s expected the Kangaroos’ VFL team will host a series of matches at their spiritual home in 2019.

The Saints’ VFL affiliate, Sandringham, could also play matches at Moorabbin as the AFL club completes its move from Seaford.

The return of more-regular curtain-raisers will be seen as a win for AFL fans, who have been starved of pre-match action in recent seasons.

The opening round of the VFL season is likely to see a match played at the MCG prior to an AFL Round 3 game.

Geelong’s ‘Country Game’ against Essendon (AFL Round 7) is also set to feature the two clubs’ VFL teams in a Round 5 clash.

Good to see we play all fixtures from that point on, either at Arden St or Marvel as a curtain raiser.

No more Werribee as of June.

I’m sure they will.

The majority of VFL teams haven’t finalised their list at this early stage
I’d expect most of the list to be finalised by now give or take maybe a handful of spots

Even still have heard very little vfl news this offseason. Have we even recruited anyone other than Whitecross and Morgan?
