I’m probably on my own here but I didn’t mind the first transformers movie Bay did. Mindless action with a few cheap laughs, it’s no Citizen Kane but it was an enjoyable popcorn flick. Everything else with the transformers name from that point on got really bad really quick though.

I kinda thought this film rode the quality of the villain as opposed to anything else. Keaton was a good villain which made the film better than it should have been to be honest. If Keaton wasn't in it (and the actor in place wasn't as good) - not sure it would have worked.

A solid villain definitely helped but I also found Tom Holland to be the best Spider-Man yet. Actually looking and acting like a kid helped and the guy has strong comedic timing with enough talent to sell the drama. Maguire had two good films and Garfield one, let's see how Holland goes in the sequel.

Leave No Trace - Really well directed look at the wide reaching effects of PTSD and specifically on the children of those suffering. An extreme example of course, with the father living with his daughter in forests and surviving on the bare minimal. Ben Foster is just about the most underrated actor working today and young Kiwi Thomasin McKenzie is very impressive.

The Rider - A semi fictional story of a rodeo rider who hurts himself in a fall and cannot continue with his career and passion. Non actor Brady Jandreau is terrific in the lead role and using other non professionals including Brady's autistic sister paid off in spades. Young director Chloe Zhao is one to watch.

If I could be bothered hating celebrities I'd hate Lady Gaga. Had a few pop hits and that should've been the end of it. Modern media however if you get a #1 song they'll just push you for the next decade. Now she might win a ******* Oscar to go with the Golden Globe she won for remembering her lines in American Horror Story. Some campaigners decided she's Madonna 2.0 and now we're stuck with her on the A-list forever. The 21st century wasn't supposed to be like this.

Strong, one of the best of the year IMO. Her pop-songs in the film were trash (but i think that was the point as it drove her commercialisation plot) but the ones with Bradley were good and the stroy was a classic (hence the remake) and still did well. To each their own tho.

I have a strong dislike for Lady Gaga; both her music and her public image.

I also don't care much for Bradley Cooper, even if he can act.

But ASIB was unquestionably a well made film. Country and pop music might not be your thing, likewise romance, but the acting and cinematography were top notch.

I think you're letting your personal feelings get in the way if you can't even acknowledge that.

Roma: God this movie was a hard slog. I can understand why the hardcore serious movie fan would go in for this. In terms of the cinematography, the edits and the constant tension in the film, its a very nice piece of work. But this isn't a short film in a gallery, highlighting a very niche time and place... its entertainment. And on the front of script, character development and pacing, this film has missed entirely. The only character I felt that had any depth or growth was the Grandma, who had about 3 lines. Central character had nearly no growth or arc, being a nearly identical character at the end despite all the events of the film.

To me, it feels like the kind of thing that is in Oscar conversations, simply because the right people have said its good. I found it a struggle, but didn't get the rewarding post-watch thinking payoff that quality challenging films deliver.

How To Train Your Dragon 3 - hits a lot of the same beats as the 2nd movie. Visually stunning although the score is not quite as good as the previous two entries. Completes the series well, but light on action. 6.5/10

Have been going through the classics to end the year (Die Hard, The Bourne films, Lethal Weapon series etc).

Currently marathoning the Rambo franchise.......

Liked both of Garfield's films.

Holland is good but there's very little drama to actually sell. The scene in the car with Keaton is great but that's about it. The rest is very light and laughy.

McKay turns up the volume on the b-roll footage, narration, editing and meta narrative and proceeds to * up the film in the process. Excellent performances from the whole cast but the film felt directionless, tactless and limp.

The Informant! - finally got around to watching this. Solid film about the true story of Mark Whitacre and his unnervingly stupid business activities and being the highest level corporate whistle blower in the mid nineties. Damon was good as the goofy lead and surrounded by a pretty good supporting cast.

Are you saying all of the music was over produced? Cause (and I’m no music producer) the Cooper and Cooper/Gaga songs certainly don’t feel like there was a tonne of production behind them. Coopers performance in the drag bar (as well as Gaga’s to that end) are about as raw as you can get.

I thought the music was great and the movie really hit the mark.
Not sure what the target demographic was but pretty much everyone I know has seen it and whether they’re young or old are all praising the entire production.

Unclear as to what you’re so angry about tho as your review wasn’t really very coherent or cohesive, just lots of bias I think.

You obviously hate Lady Gaga for some reason but that’s just a stage name, an entertainers facade, the person she plays in the film is completely different but you seem to have trouble differentiating between those 3 personalities.

Bradley Cooper was excellent and should give the Oscar a nudge.

Oh and the Ramones do have genuine talent but their music is kinda repetitive and gets boring very fast & they can’t act for s**t.

Vice (2018)

Vice offers a detailed overview of Dick Cheney’s elaborate ruse to exploit the country’s highest authority as VP, but undercuts this with crass and often clunky humor that overstates the nature of Cheney’s villainy. I found the film to be gimmicky, and despite Bale's amazing transformation physically and verbally into the man, I felt it was all superficial, and I had no more insight into the kind of man Cheney was, other than what I already knew. For me this was the let down of the film. 5/10

I saw it too but didnt review because I couldnt put my finger on what exactly bugged me about the film but you have said it very well but I rated it a bit higher because I thought some parts were quite clever and newish s so I give em an extra point for trying even if it didnt work that well 6/10

The other thing is I cant watch Steve Carrell as a serious actor. I dont think he has much range especially when you put him next to someone of Bales calibre.

FWIW I'd happily take 1 guy and 2 turntables over this sentimental chick-flick tripe. Did Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Gillian Welch, Kris Kristofferson or Elvis Presley etc. need 10,000 people to write a three chord country song?

(btw When Doves Cry is killer, but not in the Top 50 Prince songs IMO (will save that for another day though)).
