Board members are volunteers, also. That's sort of not the point.

Interesting to know exactly how Walls came to volunteer, would it not?
Where did the notion spring out from, how was it handled and did Bolton agree with requiring a nominated mentor & voice by his side?

It may not matter, but I can't help but wonder how the whole thing came to be.
The thing is we cant be saying SOS is doing great..Bolts is the man for the job..Russell best thing since sliced bread...the clubs in good shape to climb back up....
and then whine when they make an appointment....Some may have an anti Walls stance for whatever reasons and thats a personal choice...but clearly the club are happy with it all...and he is a champion player and premiership coach in navy blue..that in itself demands respect

Whine? Where exactly is this whining expressed?
I thought that terms questioning and interested may have ben more applicable, but you found whine? :)

I'm interested in how and why the 'appointment' came about and it's unlikely anyone here may answer it, but you know; You ask questions, you get answers.
How can one not be interested? Think about it.

1. Whose idea was it to ask Walls for a little help?
2. Why did they feel Bolton could do with mentoring?
3. Why take it public?
4. Is Bolton happy about having someone handed over to him, or did Bolton ask for someone to bounce off?
5. Why Robert Walls? Because he was an easy get or because he made for the best candidate to mentor (sound board) Bolton?

Like I said, it may well be working a dream but put yourself in any situation (Walls, Bolton, The Board, Head of Football, CEO) and play this out.
Much more interesting that way than to just call someone out as whining, when that wasn't nor isn't the case.

I think with the departure of Neil Craig they where always going to appoint a more senior guy to take over that mentoring role again, Craig did a good job so why wouldn’t they go again, whether Walls was Bolts idea or someone else’s is anyone’s guess but we could have done worse.

All good questions.

BB will not be at the helm when the club starts marching up the ladder. I would not be surprised if they are quietly looking to see what may become available at the end of the year....or sooner. Richardson is in the same boat at St.kilda.The only problem for him, is that his replacement is his assistant.

And what if BB is at the helm as we win the premiership?....blanket statements as such are just silly...its as if you just choose to try and illicit a response by being so contrary.

As to the second post. He lost the players alright...half of them in the sickroom many of the rest young and just trying hard to get a foothold in a brutal sport.

I think Richardson is the victim of the same thing Ratten, Malthouse, Pagan and Brittain were at Carlton. It's not that they couldn't coach. It's that the people around them are either sub par or non-existent. Saints have not had anywhere near the recruiting tactics and success we have had. They aren't known for their football department. Carlton has always been a coaching wasteland because the quality of people in the football department was poor to non-existent and all it produced was a group of players not fit enough, not developed enough and not enough quality with player contracts really restricting things.

We've tried very hard to fix this. If we get to the end of next year, we will look at where we can improve and if it's tactics we will bring in specialist tactical people to work with Bolton or at least try to.

The days of sack the coach because something is wrong are long gone at Carlton. This is an era where problems are isolated and specialist people are employed to improve these things.

Agree pretty much but I think tactics is only of much use when the depth of the list and the talent in it can make things work even without much strategy. A good side can always be better with clever stuff by coaching. A poor side it doesnt make much difference how savvy the coach is unless its those tactics that reduce football to a flooded defence.

I know its conservative but one can't get too carried away.....

The days of just blaming the coach are over. Look at Hardwick & Buckley. People that think it’s just Bolts have no idea.

He is very highly rated internally, still a young coach learning and has an extremely young and developing list. Still in the middle of the rebuild.

The change that Bolton has brought to the club in terms of culture and belief is immense. Underrated and the players love him. Any belief he lost them last year is absolute BS

We have now added a gun fitness person, new medical, added to coaches, new football manager, new opposition analysis, Judd, Walls, better recruiting and overall support

People need to stop pushing personal agendas

But never stop open dialogue.
Nothing should be off the table when discussing the club in a reasoned and thought out manner, whether it be good or bad.

It's fine saying that people that think it's just Bolton have no idea, but should things not map out the way the club foresees them to go, what do they do?
What if the team doesn't gel on the park this year? The next?
Bolton has been good for the club in terms of how much he has invested of himself into it, but everyone has KPI's to meet and no one more than the coach.

Look, it's a conversation that doesn't necessarily have to take place now, but should things not go to whatever the plan may be, questions would have to be asked and who we ask them of? Everything at this stage points to the one direction.

Before them was Clarkson and Bomber Thompson.
Plenty of evidence that it takes much more time than we wish to get there.
And lots of knowledge in our club now because they told us several things that would happen, and have been right all through.
That we are on a journey and the enjoyment has to be in watching the list being assembled rather than the scoreboard and ladder.
That it would be bumpy and get worse before it gets better.
That the barometer cannot be in wins and losses or even percentage. Instead it has to be in the progress to rebuild what was a shambles.
That it was a 66 game rebuild.

That was Boltons words his vision and its on target as predicted.

I have always felt that is 66 games to cut the chaff. 3 seasons to do the pruning within the confines of salary cap, and contracts and having to carry a certain number on the list, and put some sort of side out each week.
Never has been 66 games to have the premiership side in place. The hard work starts now. Its about training and conditioning and building that resilience thats much talked about. This list is now there to succeed not to delist.

The list was three drafts which is done and now it’s about development. Even with the incredible young talent we have they will take a minimum 12 months to really step up and play to the consistent level we need.

We need a fit list. Russell will help but it will take him 12 months to get them where he wants them.

This year is about improvement, hope and effort. No more big loses and being much more competitive. Under the first two years of Bolton we fought out games no matter what. A few unexpected wins will be happen and if that all happens we are well on track

Last year was bad for so many reasons but young players got games and look better for it.

2020 is when I expect real obvious improvement but there will be a lot to like in 2019

The one coach we are short is a gun midfield coach, spewing we couldn’t get Mitchell would have been perfect fit.
