Modern politics. Get a load of the reporting and the "tweets" from some of our enlightened young folk (and what is it with the practice of quoting people's tweets in news articles? Like some random yahoo on the internet corroborates a story). They claim that "It's OK to be white" is hate speech. Let that sink in.

Edit: Also, it's PC gone maaaaaaad.... someone here hates that term, but I can't remember who. Probably schmuttt .

The tweets were incredible, an yet their attacks on the people who made the sign kind of validate the sign.

As someone pointed out, if that sign said it was ok to be black, the people would probably receive a ribbon of Australia and be on the news as heroes. It's such a strange time to be alive when white people are attacking other white people for being white.

Am I missing something about the banner at the Big Bash last night?

'Its ok to be white'

3 blokes were arrested and kicked out of the ground and are now facing backlash as racists..

Now I don't like people using sport for political stuff but what exactly is the issue here?
Imo, the banner should have just been confiscated

wtf

I'm closer to the right than the left, I just like stirring up Topkent

The banner thing is a flat out joke, seeing twerps like Neroli Meadows liking all the 'its so racist' tweets.

People these days are beyond help.

I mean maybe I have more 'old school values' for lack of a better phrase but I'm not alone in thinking that's an absurd state of the world right?

Definately an absurd state.

But if you make a sign saying that and stick it up at an event with prime time viewing... well they are either s**t stirrers kicking the hornets nest or simply thick.

Either way they deserve a bake too

Possibly the fact the slogan has been used by neo nazi groups like the KKK for close to 20 years. Much like the nazi salute, the slogan in itself isn't offensive, it's the history behind it.

FWIW the blokes weren't arrested, they were just asked to leave. I've been ushered out of (many) venues for less.

You won't find a lot resembling actual journalism at news.com.au, defo good for a laugh though.

Re: the sign itself, I wouldn't go as far as "hate speech"... it's just dribble that appeals to the morbidly obese imbeciles who go to Blair Cottrell's rallies and vote for Pauline Hanson. Clearly the sign was designed to be offensive, and good on whoever made it: I'm sure they're stoked with their 15 seconds of fame.

Are these slogans actually actively used by these racist groups, or is that just the story the media has been peddling for that long? I've not heard "it's OK to be white" before, and it's hardly "white is right" or other similar stuff that came out of apartheid era Africa.

I tend to assume this falls into the modern hyperbole that if you don't agree with whatever statement the media is making, then you're part of the problem and are a dyed in the wool [insert relevant]-ist.

Honestly, the sooner these people go the way of the Buzzfeed dodo and have to try to learn to code, the better. Why do these media munchkins think it's their job to browbeat people instead of report the facts?

I doubt most people who use the phrase would advocate for a picture of Hitler in every classroom, but Blair Cotrag certainly did, and the rest of the Reclaim Australia/True Blue Crew/Aussie Patriot nutters have adopted it too. To be clear I don't think everyone who associates with those groups are racist themselves, but the guys running the show almost certainly are.

In any case, we wouldn't be talking about this if a bunch of man-babys didn't try to hijack a cricket match to make a shitty political statement.

I’m up for that.

I hadn’t read the story - learned it first time from Topkents post. I would prefer to avoid the media reports since for the reasons you have outlined.

What were the facts? Topkent said they were arrested? If yes, what for?

This is the way I see it. Is the slogan "it's alright to be white" racist in of itself? Of cause not. It's associated with racists. As Toump Ass pointed out.

It's also just shows a level of insensitivity to the social and cultural movements going on at the moment. Basically these three white males got offended that the media, in all forms, are calling out the s**t other white people have been getting away with.

Now most people realise the point the media is trying to make, reflect on their own behaviour and if they don't do the same s**t the media is calling out, which is the vast majority, they move on because it doesn't impact them.

These dudes have either missed the point, felt attacked and got defensive or are racist sexists and want the social power structure to keep favouring their demographic.

Now if I was truly being discriminated against in the form of not being allowed in certain seats on public transport, not allowed to go to certain pubs and not allowed to go to certain schools etc, well sure then I'd probably sympathise with these three. But that isn't the case.

However there does seem to be a double standard. Left leaning media constantly groups all white males in the one evil category, then gets pissed off at people like these three who point out the obvious that not all white people are evil. However, say for example someone said all Muslims are terrorists, they'd be a horrible person and Muslims who hit back and state the obvious that they aren't all terrorists, are hailed as being brave.

Not all Muslims are terrorists and not all white people are racist sexists. But there is a double standard on how you approach the issue. Probably has something to do with one being a minority and the other a majority group.

We'll I've over analysed this. The three men weren't arrested but were asked to leave. Probably not for what was on the banner but rather the cricket is not the place to push your political agenda. In my opinion, they weren't hurting anyone, just confiscate the banner and let them enjoy the cricket.

The reason I got so up in arms about it was ive been reading alot lately about the influence media has on people and learning about fox etc in the states how they are politically motivated. Tell me how this is a balanced article that allows the reader to decide for themself.

Headline
Racist banner flaunted at big bash match

Opening paragraph
A controversial banner, hung at the Big Bash League match in Perth on Thursday night, has caused outrage among fans across the country.

It then goes on to say the men were found by police and escorted out of the stadium, and that WA police are now ' investigating'

They they use social media posts as important opinions

Studio 10 host Joe Hildebrand chimed in, suggesting the men take their offensive sign to a cricket match in South Africa, where the oppressive Apartheid movement originated.

“Why don't they unfurl that in Johannesburg, go to a cricket match in Durban and see if you make out of the stadium alive then,” Hildebrand said.

So this * head is now comparing contempary South Africa to current WA, and saying these blokes deserved to get murdered.

The social and cultural movements going on at the moment are fueled by the garbage the media publish. I don't go out of my way to read any media sources precisely because of the bullshit they constantly peddle - don't elevate their trash to some sort of attempt to call out "white behaviour" or whatever insight you're making there. They're a bunch of useless tools who develop their theories for social improvement in closed leftist hugbox sessions and then get offended and nasty when anyone questions the narrative.

I'm a little perplexed by your comment above. What s**t have "other white people" been getting away with? In [CURRENT_YEAR], what does segregated public transport seating, not being let in to pubs, schools etc have to do with anything? Are people still allowed to hold a grudge over Hannibal invading Italy a few thousand years ago? It's almost as relevant.

As for the social power structure favouring their demographic, jump on Seek and read the job adverts looking for diversity hires. Look at the scholarships available to university students and see how many of them are specifically for women or minorities. Look at where the national and state governments spend the vast majority of their budgets. I'd suggest a lot of people are tired of hearing about special privileges being dressed up as a push for equality and then being labeled as racist, sexist, etc for calling out the bullshit.

I thought ‘arrested’ sounded a bit unlikely.

I gave up on online media and got rid of newsfeeds a while back after getting tired of lazy crappy articles composed of a selection of twitter quotes.

Someone who works at the Age told me a while back that the highest growth by miles in news consumption is the interactive online stuff - brief shock article followed by comments / discussion forum style. Articles like your example aren’t to report matters in a balanced and independent way, they’re designed to promote polarised views and clicks and advertising revenue. So I wouldn’t lose too much sleep on the theory that the media are a sinister, ultra left force united in promoting a left-wing agenda. It’s not really in most of their interests to do so. Fanning the flames and collecting the cash are bigger drivers. The fact that you got up in arms about it and we’re having this conversation tends to point to a successful commercial strategy. Though I agree it makes for woeful reading for anyone that consumes online news coverage.

You’re right that a politicised media exists. Propaganda isn’t exactly new. And it’s ******* dangerous too. The Sun and the Daily Mail are feeling pretty pleased with their role leading to the Brexit referendum result, particularly at a time and in a country where a lot of assumptions had been made about the waning power of the major newspapers.

Yeah, shame on me for clicking on it.

I'd reckon somewhere there would be a stat that shows use of the words disgrace, horror, unbelievable etc and any and all related synonyms would have gone up by 1000s of percent in newspaper headlines and opening paragraphs.

I'm sure at all the major newspapers you can hit like F4 on their keyboards and it turns a head line like ' banner at the cricket' into ' disgust and horror as racists evoke memories of Hitler'

I actually think I hate online media. The free stuff I mean. I don’t know about the subscription content because the free stuff is so terrible that I don’t really want to risk my money on what might be more of the same.

We (world generally) probably need to employ back the vast numbers of journalists that got the arse with major corporations taking over virtually all independent news outlets. People that actually try to do a bit of investigative reporting or research. I feel like virtually the entire online news content is put together by a couple of brain-damaged teenagers. At some point some news boss decided that sound bites and spin was better or cheaper than news.

Also I would like it if there could be some kind of clear line between reporting and opinion pieces. Most news now looks like a couple of thought bubbles, Twitter comments then a crocodile of comments where everyone calls everyone else a dickhead.

Not sure if they are super well known or not but there's a big news group called vice news. Brilliant stuff, they've done pieces on North Korea, Ukraine, Siberia etc all from inside the areas. They interview who they can and don't push agendas just report.

Everything on News.com and s**t like that is exactly as you said, opinion piece. Its abhorrent how they control the narrative and pass it off as news. Id be certain there are qualified journalists now who exclusively find stories off Twitter
