How did Federer drop below guys that didn't even compete at this tournament? (Del Potro) Also fell behind Anderson who got bundled out earlier in the tournament. How does that work?

Tennis rankings work on a 12 month rolling period. So today's ranking are from all the points you accumulated over the past 12 months.

Federer gained 2000 points from winning the Australian open last year, but those points have dropped from his tally as it was over 12 months ago. Federer gained 360 points from his quarter final this year. So it's a net loss of 1440 points to his tally, hence the drop in the rankings.

Hope I've explained that well enough.

Thompson ahead of Kyrgios. Unbelievable.

If that isn't a motivation to try and improve your standard, I'm not sure what is for Nick. Not that he cares but anyways...

I guess all those kids learnt something from the open and so did we.

It's a long way to the top.

AU: Djokovic
FR: Nadal / Djokovic
WC: ???
US: Djokovic / Nadal

I don’t see much change this year. Someone new could win Wimbledon, and maybe someone new has an outside chance at the US. But for the most part, 2019 looks to be business as usual.

Roger 20, Rafa 18, Novak 16 (at least)

Djokovic is one of my favourite active players, so I'd be up for a year of domination. Medvedev has steadily become my fave of the younger bunch, interested to see how he performs at IW/Miami.

Wouldn't mind seeing RBA finally crack the top 10 at some point this season.

As long as we don't get more straight set final losses from the late 80s/early 90s crowd. If those guys are going to make it again, then turn up for the final and win it or lose an epic.

I hope the season is interesting this year, I don't want to see the same top 2 players dominating again.

At least you might see some other guys challenging within 18 months. This might be the last year of the real dominance for Djokovic and Nadal. You'd expect them to split the Grand Slams in 2018, only injury would tell me otherwise. However in 12 months you will have Tisipas and a few others like Coric challenging. Think Coric may break out at the US Open and make a huge run (just a gut feel)
