and Carey. SOS could play deep or up the ground and beat any of them in the air or on the ground. Best easily. Some don't understand how good he was

That always stood out to me as the difference between Silvagni and Scarlett. SOS would take their best forward be they a FF or a CHF and put the clamps on them. If you wanted to see Carey play well you had to watch him against a side that wasnt Carlton.

In the 2009 Granny, Scarlett played on Koshitzke rather than Riewoldt. Not sure if he played on Franklin either. Not being able to pick the oppositions best forward because they didnt play a traditional full forward brings Scarlett down a couple of pegs imho.

Because they're either too young or believe in this scragging nonsense. It's hilarious how Geelong supporters keep bringing that up, only to suddenly become quiet when I show them this:

Scarlett vs Fev arguably did worse than SOS ever did under "modern rules" or however the hell they want to interpret it conveniently. Interestingly enough, the 2nd image was at Princes Park where Fev kicked 6 on him and Scarlett had to be moved off him.

The "scragging" excuse is just a BS reason for people to complain. SOS played to the umpire like others of that era. If he had been called on it he would have adjusted. Had to many skills not to

And Hird, who also named SOS as his best opponent. I remember a game against the Bombers in 1996, the year Hird was on fire and won the Brownlow, where SOS was winning the battle so Hird went into the midfield; SOS followed him in and smashed him from there too, picking up 3 Brownlow votes along the way.

So much for miner's lights, hey Ablett?

For those of you who were wondering about the Ablett quote:
People say to me that Steve had my measure, a lot of people have. But Stephen never played on me until I was 32 and over. If he had played on me when I was in my prime on a forward flank they would have had to put a miner's light on him because he would have still been out there looking for me at 10 o'clock that night.

When I was a kid growing up in the 90s I never understood the Carey is the Goat talk. Maybe I was stupid but once he retired I realised that the reason I never rated him was because I watched mostly Carlton games. When he played against Carlton SOS always smashed him.

Carey would get frustrated and start giving away free kicks.

Absolutely correct.

And as for SOS, his final series in 1995 where he gave up only 1 goal against his direct opponents, Daryl White, Wayne Carey, Gary Ablett Senior, and that goal was Daryl White, surely cemented his name as the Full back of the Century.
