As much a i despise this individual, a true spectator on life. I do understand the need for the suppression .
Justice can be seemingly cruel. I dont want future cases jeopardised by flippant on line comments.
Give it a few months and providing this person do not pull some shonky “I am to sick to be tried” we will al be able to dance on his legacy with great glee as the victims continue to endure.

I think much of the online comments were a result of an article by the SBS which many didn't read and took it that defense had sought the court order. Political rhetoric.

What is concerning is it appeared SBS had sought to intimidate a judge. Now there are people facing jail.
 
I still think the suppression order has been somewhat effective even in the digital media. While I don’t doubt the court would prefer there to be no coverage the international media haven’t been able to report much beyond the name of the individual and the verdict, there’s not a lot in their reports giving details of the case itself.

Bottom line they don’t have court reporters here and rely on piggy backing on local press which haven’t been able to report. Given the case at hand if there was no order in place there would be saturation coverage of the details and real risk that future court action would be compromised.

It’s not that difficult to wait a few months for everything to resolve itself. Some outlets have geoblocked, and while not full proof at least makes some effort to comply with the court, it’s disappointing that others seem to be thumbing their nose and risking other actions before the court.

Suppression order lifted. Cardinal George Pell guilty sexually abusing two choir boys. Guilty of one count of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and four counts of committing an indecent act with, or in the presence of, a child.

Current trial charges withdrawn and previous trial that found him guilty suppression lifted. Sentencing can proceed. Defence has appealed conviction.

So the man who ran the churches response to sexual abuse here in Australia has been found guilty of sexual abuse. A real case of the fox being in charge of the chicken coop.
I feel sorry for the victims of the swimming pool allegation as they will not have there day in court as the DPP belived Pell would not get a fair trial.
I cant wait for sentencing and. Hope he Does time and does not weasel out of it by being old or of ill health.

Any wonder victims felt traumatised after being interviewed by Pell in their efforts to seek compensation for sexual abuse involving the church.
He was abusing kids after the churches response had commenced.
He was not diplomatic but buisness like in his approach to victims, aggressively challenging what they said.

Look forward to hearing the churches heartfelt response too. :rolleyes:
 
Pells defence was one of the most detailed , expensive campaigns run.
No expense was spared tearing apart every statement, doing discoveries on every witness, testing every aspect of any fact given.

Yet , he was still found guilty.
The case was run by a high level prosecutor who dotted the I and crossed the Ts. They were fully aware Pell had the full financial support of the church and a bevy of lawyers trying to get him off.
Pell has appealed but due to the particular nature of how the case was run by the DPP they need to show a legal technicality which is not likely in this instance.

So that's what they were trying to hide, not vague subjective incidents similar to Pell just staring a little too long in the showers.

So intimidating as the Archbishop and little boys totally powerless. It's utterly depraved, power hungry *******

What lengths did Abbott go to protect him?

I know hundreds of blokes (probably more) who I know well enough to call them a good bloke. If quizzed by police I would say yes they are good blokes. Stats across the community show a % of those may have committed a crime and/or hit their partner. Can hardly blame someone for seeing the good side to a person and being unaware of the bad side.

Went to a Catholic school in the 80's with a victim who was paid a pissy little $500 to keep his mouth shut. There are so many more victims of abuse by Christian Brothers who will never find peace and as you say, have their day in court. Rot and die in jail, scumbag.

I think we really need to commend the bravery of the people who stood up against this monster and said enough.

Well done to the prosecution as well, outstanding work winning on the oppositions terms.

The prosecutor has done an outstanding job considering what he was up against, especially considering there was no physical evidence (that I know of).

Yep. Amazing bravery shown by those who come forward, especially in the face of the Church Legal Monster. To this day they try to silence victims and pay them off - they are deserving of nothing but scorn and derision and disgust. I have no issue with people who have faith but at this point celebrating it within that church is foul - it's a poisoned organisation that refuses to change or acknowledge it's crimes.

So relieved Pell is finally facing justice and will rightly see his reputation in tatters before he dies a shameful, coward's death - hopefully behind bars.
