Traded Jarrad Witts [traded to Gold Coast for picks 44 & 62]

Yeah, Witts was always going to become a solid AFL ruckman. He wanted out, as he wasn't going to get Number 1 ruck minutes with Grundy at the same club. Pies had no choice to trade him and apparently GC were the only interested party, so we weren't able to extract value. What I don't understand is why teams like Essendon and the Dogs didn't have a crack at him.
That's not true, there was reported significant interest from several clubs, including Brisbane from memory. Once a player nominates a club though, it's always tough to extract full value for an uncontracted player, especially one who was sitting on the fringes like Witts, through no real fault of his own.

Gotta admit I was not keen on him at the time, although he didn’t have a whole heap of exposed form at the top level and he was never getting a game ahead of Grundy.

But he has really embraced the move up and has developed as a leader as well. Probably our most important player now (largely due to a lack of competent alternative, but still).

Ruckmen especially take ages to reach their potential. Witts is the perfect example of this.

It is one of the reasons clubs often don't draft for ruckmen, they trade for ruckmen.

He didn’t suddenly become a good footballer just because he was made captain. Always had the ability, but was just behind Brodie Grundy.

For a time there before he got injured he was keeping Grundy out but as soon as Grundy got his spot Witts could never get another look in as it was clear Grundy had past him. Witts is a very good tap ruckman

And Grundy is a one man band. If Witts was on our list, he could easily vie with Vardy and Hickey (and previously Lycett, Sinclair) for a spot in the side. At the Pies, Dees, North etc. he's a reserve.

mason cox is more effective for Collingwood than Witts would have been. witts is a one position player.

Just appointed GC co-captain. Told you he would end up being a steal at the price CG paid...

Yep. Suns got him for a Steal and we settled for lot less then he was really worth

He is not as Mobile as Hickey and Vardy. Espically Vardy who is a 2nd Ruckman. Witts is a Number 1 Ruckman and could not play elsewhere well

Good deal for the Suns

However given Witts exposed senior form was limited and given Collingwood were interested in father son points, it wasn’t a terrible trade as others insist it was.

Huh cool story mate.you had enough points to get both with out the trade so don't use that line 🤣 was fun reading pies fans rate him a 1st round pick but!

For what it's worth witts would be outperforming cox if they were to swap roles. Yet to see witts handball through the goals to

Witts is not a forward. He’s a number one ruckman, and we already have one of them. One of the best two in the business.

Witts needed to change clubs to get an opportunity. Without that opportunity his trade value wasn’t as high as it could have been. We got unders but not massive unders.

Put this nicely umm aduh! People saying witts wouldn't do as much as cox if played forward are kidding themselves..

Witts needed to change clubs to play the role he’s best at. That’s a fact and nobody apart from you seems to disagree.

Although you do type like a nine year old so maybe you can’t understand simple concepts.

Getting rid of 3rd man in the ruck contest has helped him a lot.
Gets to use his size and reach more often now.

Not sure if he would be this good under the old ruck rules.

Witts was tried as a forward many many times at Collingwood. His leading patterns are ok but he lacks the speed to gain separation from his opponent on a lead and is a poor contested mark.

If Witts truly was capable of playing that forward role in the same team as Grundy then we wouldn’t have gone after Cox in the first place and we wouldn’t have been willing to let him go so easily.

Agree man. Which game was it where he played up forward and got 2 kicks all game? That ruined the idea of witts and grundy playing together.
Flip side cox last year had what? one handball was it all game. So honestly (imo) witts could be playing the same role as cox. But muh.

Cox came second in the league last year for contested marks. Whilst he wasn’t a consistent force in front of the goals, he did manage two bags of 5, one in the preliminary final against the reigning premiers. He’s not the best forward going around, but he does have speed off the mark, and is a very good contested mark. If you think Witts could even get close to that then you’re kidding yourself.
