You've previously admitted to hating the game and not watching the game, so any of your opinions on any of the subjects in this thread are worth about 2 tenths of 1 perecnt of sweet f*** all.
Maybe .....but i'm still able to post them ......more than what you've done in the last 10 years

Yeah, good point.
Warner's been banned from leadership positions. Smith, another 12 months.
Who will Captain if Finch goes?

With who is currently in the squad, it could only really be Maxwell. Think he thrives the more attention he gets, so being Captain wouldn't affect his game that much, he may be one of those that actually lifts with the added responsibility and pressure. Also, because he's a freak, it would make games more interesting, as he may pull some unorthodox bowling changes and fielding placements.

It's a bit like having Shane Warne as Captain rather than a Ricky Ponting type. Not necessarily going to follow the pre-planned general game plan, will adjust to the required game situation with a bit more gut instinct and what he is seeing out on the pitch.

It would only be a short term tenure anyway, as Smith is probably going to Captain Tests and ODI's again once his leadership ban expires. The only issue is, the ODI World Cup is approaching quickly, and the Aussie suits don't exactly love him.

Khawaja has issues with his brother being arrested for terrorism, so he needs to stay out of the limelight and pressure and just focus on himself and his game. The would be too much public outcry of "terrorist" family type stuff if he was made Captain.

Stoinis isn't up to leadership yet. Selectors aren't even quite sure what he is or how or where to play him. Didn't bowl at all in the T20's but bowled in the first ODI. Still pretty new in the international squad, needs to find and own his spot first.

Handscomb, not leadership, still not sure if he is even in once Warner and Smith come back.

Turner, could do it, as he is clutch for Perth Scorchers in T20s, but is still a fringe international player so doesn't necessarily have a spot.

Carey, good VC material. We hate making keepers the Captain, apart from Paine. Especially if we elevate Carey to play as an opener.

Cummins, just needs to focus on staying fit and keeping his body right, as he is the current "heart" in Australian cricket. Captaincy would likely distract him from his match-winning ways.

India have the premier T20 competition, yet are ranked the #1 cricket nation.

Go figure their players can adjust between the different forms of the game.

India have a population of around 1.4 billion people.
Australia have a population around 25 million.
Their population is therefore around 56x higher than ours.
Australia has a higher number of high-level sports that talented athletes are required to choose between in their development: AFL, league, union, soccer, tennis, cricket, basketball.
Indians can also choose hockey, but there is way more money to be made in cricket.

If Australia had a population of 1.4 billion people and all of our top level athletes chose to play cricket over any other alternative, we would potentially have 500 more Steven Smith/Warner/Maxwell/Cummins type freaks who are able to play across formats. Really India should have more Virat Kohli types pushing up for spots. Compared to interest and population they have technically under-performed in terms of quality and dominace. A lot of ex-Australian and other ex-world class cricketers are development coaches there now and really in about 10-20 years with that additional investment and development the next gen of Indian players should be almost unbeatable. No one should be able to touch their best 12 players, and their B team should be world class as well. Similar to Australia in the Brad Hodge era, except even more depth.

It's a bit like New Zealand and their Union team All Blacks. In New Zealand, all their kids are focussed on Union. Union gets all their high level talent. And with a population under 5 million, they dominate the rest of the world in Union to a point they are almost unbeatable (they do draw some top level talent from island nations like Tonga, Samoa and Fiji). If Australia were 100% focussed on Union as our national sport, we should technically be able to match New Zealand.

India with their population and focus on cricklet should have the higher proportion of freaks to can play and adjust to all 3 formats of the game than any other nation.

Cummins has been elevated to VC, though that's been a poisoned chalice for the last 18 months. They clearly see leadership potential in him, and he's been easily our best performed player since Sandpapergate. He appears the most likely to take the reigns.

I have my doubts as to whether Cummins gets top job if Finch goes out. If Mitch Marsh is an example, VC means nothing. Cummins was shouldering so much bowling and batting load during the India tests, looked wrecked but still kept giving. Had he been Captain durings those tests as well he would have passed out from sheer physical and mental exhaustion.

That appears to be Langer's plan.

Finch's form will turn around, we have basically played India all these months and they have worked him out. Finch just needs some solid time in the middle against the lesser nations to get his mindset in the right place again.

I did read on cricinfo a damning stat about him that since his record T20 knock he has only hit 50 once. Dont quote me on that, its a IIRC.

Playing his 100th ODI, Finch perished for the ninth duck of his career in the format, caught behind in the second over off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah.

It is Finch’s fourth single figure score in his past seven ODIs – in which he has only passed 20 once – and 12th in 17 international white-ball innings since making his Test debut.

Once a white-ball specialist, Finch’s form has dropped off a cliff since his Test call-up. The Victorian has averaged 11.85 in ODI cricket since receiving his baggy green and 7.50 in T20Is. Combined that’s an average of 9.29 across 17 white ball innings.

The opener has now failed to reach 50 in 20 consecutive white-ball innings for Australia.

Finch touched on the impact becoming a Test player had had on his white-ball abilities in November.

“In the UAE (where Finch made his Test debut) my technique really tightened up. Those technique changes have probably hurt me a bit in the one-dayers - I am not quite as free,” Finch said.

Finch was averaging 54.50 with a strike rate of 95.61 in ODI cricket in 2018 before his Test debut and 92.80 with a strike rate of 206.22 in T20Is in the same period.

He'll recover his form eventually, but I'm not sure the World Cup is the best time & place to be hoping that happens.

I'm not sure why it is ok in cricket to carry someone who hasn't contributed in 20 games, and hope they come right.
If this was footy, if we had someone like Matt Crouch, Gibbs, or Sloane, who instead of outputting 20+ touches per game, were going at 5 possessions per game instead and not contributing at all (ala Curtly Hampton vs Richmond Rd16 2018 - 2 possessions in 83% ToG) there is no way that supporters here would be alright for it for more than 2 games in a row before asking some serious questions.

Oh hell, Finch has followed his good knock into the 90's last ODI with a 2-ball duck tonight. Bowled .
Is that one innings gonna be enough to retain him for the World Cup, or will he dig in again in the 5th game? If he does, will it be too little too late?

This is the Aus cricket team. ! good innings will keep him there forever.

Ha, yeah, I forgot. :D

I didn't watch the game last night (waiting for highlights on the ABC this morning), but I followed the commentary online over the last 12-15 overs (bed at 0250 *looks for bleary-eyed emoji*). The win was unexpected but dazzling.
Who'd have thought Khawaja would come good like that in ODIs in India, of all places? (are the wickets deadset batting tracks? Must be. I read that the dew made it difficult to bowl last night but if it was expected, wouldn't Kohli have bowled first? I just read in ABC online:
"Virat Kohli described the pitch as a belter after winning the toss and some 717 runs were scored in total. ")
Handscomb was also very good.
Maxwell's cameo helped, then Turner (84 off 43!!:D) blasted them to the win with great support from Carey.
One of our best wins for a long time.

I went to be last night thinking unlikely we would get close to the win, so pleasantly surprised by the result.

Great confidence for Turner, who only came in late for an injured Stoinis.

Out bowling lacked plans early & we were lucky to keep the score below 360 in the end as was tracking worse.

Going to be interesting to see what the team looks like for England, which is totally different conditions. Need players who can adjust to the seaming ball, which makes me worry about Finch.

Finch & Marsh should be making way for Warner & Smith... but they wont drop Finch.

Talk about seizing one's opportunity! Good on him.
I tried to go to bed, but as each over passed, I stayed up, hoping.

Just watched the Finch dismissal from last night at normal speed and in slo-mo.
Finch got so far across that his head was outside the line of the ball. Bat, too, so he has to swing across the line which contributes to his similar lbw dismissals. Lovely inswinger kept going in and bowled him off the inside of his front pad.
Reminds me so much of Watson's get-outs.

Amazing, Australia win the last 3 games to take out the series against India 3 to 2.
First time Australia has ever given up a 2 to 0 lead and come back to win a 5 game series.
First ODI series win in India in a decade, following a first T20 series win.

Uzzie hit peak form during the series, almost back to his best.
Handscomb surprisingly had a pretty good series as well.
Shaun Marsh was dropped for the final game, which was great, hopefully means career is over.
Finch, was average in the final game, but selectors will forgive him, because we won the series.

Series scores
Khawaja: 50, 38, 104, 91, 100 = 383 runs @ 76.6 average

Marsh: DNP, 16, 7, 6, DNP = USELESS = 29 runs @ 9.6

Cummins was top bowler with 14 wickets.
Zampa had impact in every game and is our leading short form spinner.
Richardson also had impact in the 3 games he played.

Bowling
Coulter- Nile: 2/46, 1/52, DNP, DNP, DNP = 3/98 in 2 games

The same team now heads off to the UAE to play 5 ODI's against Pakistan. Smith and Warner are going there briefly for a team meet up as well prior to the IPL. They will be back in the team for the World Cup.

With them coming back into the top order, there is going to be a fight for top order World Cup spots.
Khawaja, Handscomb, Stoinis and Carey looked to have booked their spots.
For mine, Marsh, Turner and Finch are the ones fighting it out, and Maxwell needs to lift in the UAE to keep the pressure off.
Marsh will probably score a few hundreds in dead rubbers against Pakistan to book his place.

Finch 27 runs. Hard to say in a ODI if that is coming into some sort of form. At least its minutes in the middle. Khawaja is starting to show how good he can be. Cummins is a gun.

"A decade ago Australia won an ODI series in India despite a surfeit of injuries. Numerous stronger sides have left empty handed since then, so it was with a great deal of satisfaction that Aaron Finch's team sealed this victory from 0-2 down, the first time an Australian side had ever done so in 50-over matches, with a disciplined, determined and tactically astute defence of 272 in Delhi. "

Best performed: Khawaja (avge 76 with 2 tons!), Turner (another strong finisher), Handscomb, Carey, Zampa all stood up. Terrific economy and wickets from Cummins, and Maxwell won a game, too.

I'd say India paid the price for (somewhat arrogantly, or was he injured?) resting Dhoni for the last 2 games.
Even so, great series win over there.

Imo, we need to reward the guys who fought back from 0-2 to win our 1st series in a long time & 1st in 10 years against India away.

My world cup team would be:
1 Khawaja
2 Finch
3 Smith
4 Handscomb
5 Stoinis
6 Maxwell
7 Carey
8 Richardson
9 Cummins
10 Starc
11 Zampa

12 Warner
13 Turner
14 Coulter-Nile
15 Behrendorff (need another swing option in the UK)

Hazelwood isn't death bowler & poorer bat than most.

Lyon isn't needed as we already have Zampa, Smith, Maxwell, Turner & Finch even as options
