Will be a shame to lose the WACA but there really isn't the population or need for it, is there?

In a way I don't mind the idea of getting rid of Leederville Oval and getting Subiaco to play at what will essentially be a done up school ground at Subi (with a grandstand and mostly grass banks – not those ugly limestone things at half the WAFL grounds now) and East Perth return to the WACA (along with the WAFC). Play WA U18 games at the WACA, as well as the WAAFL granny and school level finals etc.

Was remarking to a mate just the other day during the JLT how weird the terracing at Leederville looked in isolation, but even weirder that it's set back behind a shallow grass bank

It looks like s**t, all cold and stoney even in the warmer months. Hate how cheap it looks on the WAFL broadcasts. They're all stained and look like a pisshead's mate has done some landscaping out the back of someone's slopey backyard for $200 a day and a carton of piss at the end of it.

Good summation. Only seen it on TV, but they look exactly like you describe it, and even though sandstone kills concrete in most contexts, you can't beat good deep concrete terracing with a few can bars down the back of the hill.

It just looks s**t because it's not someone's backyard or a school, it's a footy ground. It's not especially comfortable and not even that cheap. Leedy is such a weird ground now with the road directly behind the one goals and the here nor there, late 70s clubrooms having next to no romanticism whatsoever. It needs to be redone with a compact little grandstand and facilities on the wing but of course it doesn't really deserve it as more grounds need the attention and can serve way more purposes.

I'd personally keep it until it becomes decrepit and then sell it to development, but as I said, move what's there mostly to the WACA which would then have WA state footy and WA state cricket housed at it. That could see it have enough need for a redevelopment. Add in a few, but not heaps, of apartments around it. Keep it at 20,000. You could definitely play shitty test matches once every two years or so there too. It's a pity cricket is a summer sport though as you could potentially rake in some cash doing outdoor concerts for baby boomers and festivals for pinger-loving teenagers there too to tide it over. I feel there's a boutique option for the WACA simply because footy and cricket only at Perth Stadium feels really weird.

WACA’S $75m pitch to breathe life back into grand old ground
The West Australian

Details of a $75 million plan to save and rejuvenate the historic WACA Ground by turning it into a 10,000-seat, multi-sport stadium and community venue have been revealed.

The ambitious vision for WA’s home of cricket includes a piazza for year-round events such as concerts and markets, a public gym featuring a glass screen that separates it from the WA elite teams’ gym, and a new WACA museum.

It would also include the return of WAFL football to the WACA.

Classic stadium plan. 'Here is our idea that we need the govt to fund'.

I like it, but WA really needs a stadium master plan. Optus is the centre piece, WC have Lathlain, Freo have Cockburn ARC, the WAFL has Claremont, Joondalup, Leederville, Lathlain, Bassendean, Freo, East Freo, Rushton Park, cricket has the WACA, soccer/rugby has HBF Park, basketball has Perry Lakes and uses the Arena. Etc.

Subiaco is the elephant in the room. Demolish and build medium density residential/commercial with public open space etc. and use some of the proceeds to do up the WACA and make East Perth/Burswood the sporting precinct. Could even upgrade the tennis centre which looks a little bit basic.

Subiaco council own Subiaco oval i thought?? They won’t be sharing any proceeds considering they have lost a huge money spinner in football from the area.

The ground reduced to 10k is ridiculous, 20k it should be. At 10k it may as well be knocked over.
I still hate that the WACA has lost test cricket, no issue with the pyjama game moving but not the tests.

Owned by the WA govt, so I don't know how many shots City of Subiaco get to call. The WACA on the other hand is actually owned the WACA IIRC. A lot of interested parties in stadia in WA.

What benefit is it to the WAFL to play games at the WACA?

If anything the WAFL probably already have too many grounds and need to rationalise a bit with some clubs sharing the same ground.

The WACA is a luxury for the WAFL as is Subiaco Oval. They get by now without either, the WACA just want to sell their development to the govt(s) as having another tenant.

With Subiaco eventually goneski it would be nice for the WAFC to have a home somewhere.

They're really pushing this "for the WAFL!" narrative but the WAFL are pretty quiet about it.

A WAFL game with close to 10,000 people would be at Optus Stadium.

One of the reasons I heard was for channel 7 as they could play a 'game of the week' at the WACA and have their studio and cameras permantly set up without the usual set up and pack up they have each week moving around the different WAFL grounds.

I wonder, with modern technology and all that, if it would be cheaper to just add light towers and a small TV studio to some other ground, rather than demolish and rebuild the Prindiville stand at the WACA, $60 million does seem an awful lot of money.

$60 million government funding so the WAFL broadcaster doesn't have to pack and move every week or two is hilarious. Never going to happen.

WACA ****ed up. Time to get questionable government funding was years ago before Perth Stadium was announced and built. They have no hand now.

... and it looks like turning into a Federal versus State shitfight already, with neither contributing the funds but suggesting that the other should.

In it's current form the WACA is hardly up to scratch for state level cricket let alone test cricket.

Test players deserve proper facilities, the WACA can't offer that.

Forcing the majority of the crowd to endure the sun with no shade for most of the day in 2019 isn't acceptable either.

If the WACA want to host tests at the WACA Ground, they need to spend this money on it.

Neither should. CA are the sole tennants of the ground, they should be fronting up the cost.

The Federal Government wouldn't give us a dime for our brand new super stadium, what chance do you reckon there is of them funding a facelift for a ground that will host nothing but state level cricket and the odd WAFL match here and there?

Gavin Taylor (WAFC CEO) mention on 6PR Wednesday that they will be looking to purchase a parcel of land at Subiaco once the demolition work is completed. Will have a short term base at Tuart College. Sounds like the WACA is not on their radar at all.

The proposal is a joke. $60m is not enough for a proper re-development. 10k is a nothing capacity. Should be 20k make it a proper boutique ground. It needs a better commercial aspect to it. Should have bitten the bullet, sold some of the land to a development company and get them to partially fund a proper re-development as part of a condition of sale. Would have been a mix of commercial and residential but when this was proposed years ago the WACA were too stubborn. They deserve what they have. The public don't deserve and as such, games of note are played at the new stadium.
