They will likely be in 2021. They were furious they didn't get a 2020 licence and that North have the jump on them in Tasmania.

She lost 40kgs in the year before getting drafted which shouldn't be understated it's a mammoth effort and probably one of the hardest things she would have gone through in her life, but she needs to keep going if she wants to stay an AFLW player as she needs to improve her tank as well as her agility and jumping.

We saw the same with Mo Hope. She lost weight the year prior to drafting but then had it maintained for two years at about the same level. It was only in the past year that she had another considerable weight loss. It's not easy to do and there are always periods of plateauing as the body adjusts. That is required for overall health. Dramatic, consistent weight loss is not good for anyone and causes major complications for late in life.

I've been pondering the move from Goddard to Clarke.

In year one, Bec was a very effective coach. The way she brought the squad together over thousands of kilometres cannot be overlooked.
In year two, the team struggled to replicate the same form. Despite that, a win on the last day of the minor round would have seen them back in the Grand Final.
In year three, the team is playing some thrilling footy, and look to have taken significant strides tactically and physically, with greatly improved skills.

So why the apparent difference between last year and this year? Goddard to Clarke? The fact that the best player in the league is not hobbling this year? The fact that a large chunk of the squad got to winter together at NT Thunder? Or the natural evolution of the women's game at the top level?

I think there are too many parameters to conclude just yet that Clarke > Goddard.

I sort of feel like we have our recruiters to thank for this year so far. Just about any half decent coach would be riding high with this lot.

Female coaches at AFLW level will come with time. The current crop of AFLW players most likely includes some future coaches. It's hard to expect female coaches when women haven't even had had the chance to play at the elite level until 2017. Unfortunately, the reality is that at this stage, male coaches are able to speak to the experience of playing at the elite level, and female coaches cannot. Matthew Clarke had the opportunity to experience footy in a way that Bec Goddard simply could not have. That is in the process of changing.

I reckon Randall would be a gun coach, if she wants to be.

She just seems to be the kind of person people would respect and follow, and leads by example.

You forgot to mention the one that’s bringing the biggest presence - Jess Foley. She’s been a HUGE difference!

I am not sure what she was after, but I believe Clark has a couple of roles. I think this is her beef, she only had the 1 role in the club, which meant she had to keep working outside football.
Other coaches had other football roles eg Starcevich, or other coaching gigs, making them full time in football.

They wouldn't give her more responsibility, but then when she left, they replaced her with a coach that also had other roles at the club.

However, I don't entirely agree with her. If they had no other opening for her, what were they to do. Then when she left, she created the opening that let Clark add to his role.

I think it was a mutual decision to part ways. Goddard wanted more job security but the Crows couldn’t and perhaps weren’t agreeable to her wishes.

Regarding her coaching ability, I think she was great in communicating and instilling culture and mateship amongst the players. Clearly, in our first year, we relied on the talents of Phillips and Randall at either end of the ground. And Perkins brute strength was an obvious advantage as well.

I think in the second season Goddard’s coaching ability (currently) showed she’s not quite up to standard. We obviously lost our mojo when Phillips was out for most of the season, but our game plan was stagnant and didn’t appear to change much at all from the 1st season. There didn’t look like a plan B.

With Clarke this year, he’s given the girls more skills to work on and there is more solid structure and game plan. The team has become more solid all around the ground and no longer reliant on Phillips or Perkins or any other individual. Plus, the girls are finally doing more bloody handballs!!

So in summary, my views:
Goddard was important in instilling team culture and spirit.
Clarke has brought in more structure and an air of more professionalism.

We have dominated general play for the majority of every game. North tried to control the ball by getting off the man and getting a load of uncontested ball. Our swift movement the other way destroyed them when these chains of possenion eventually broke down as they went down the ground. Bullfrogs got lucky with us being incredibly inaccurate.

Hope our form continues on - any loss at this stage could mean not even playing finals.

Being essentially zoned the entire NT and SA to ourselves is a massive win, as was having the ability to sign Erin Phillips as a rookie. We’re sitting in a pretty good space, at least till Port get a side.

Certainly though appears to have been a significant lift in skills and gameplan this year.

Team structures, game plan and skills are way, way superior to our initial Premiership winning year...the biggest improvement to my eye is we've certainly minimised the bomb it and hope kick into the forward line and the bomb it and hope kick out of defence with the girl's actually lowering their eyes and seeking to hit targets more often.

So... has there been any word on Jas Hewett? There was supposedly "good news" that her injury in the preseason trial match back in January wasn't too bad.

Is she back training, but just not able to get into the side? Or is she still injured?

Crows utility Jasmyn Hewett will have surgery on her injured ankle on Friday and will be unavailable for the remainder of the season.

Hewett sustained the ankle injury in the trial game against Fremantle in January.

Crows AFLW High Performance Manager Brad Newton said it was unlucky for Hewett, who has done all she could.

“Unfortunately, despite doing everything right up until this point, Jas is still having trouble with her ankle,” Newton said.

“She saw a specialist today (Thursday) and the decision was made for her to undergo a small arthroscope.

“We are confident that this is the best thing for Jas and it will allow her to be up and running for the 2020 season.”

This has been my main takeaway this year. Probably coached well enough to give them the confidence to take the extra second to hit up a target too. We have some very good kicks in the team now.

One of the other reason is the NT Thunder in VFLW.
Able to play 12 AFLW players each week. A large proportion played and shared the games about. This kept them together in Adelaide, Darwin and Alice Springs. Helped with Renee Forth fitting in so well.

Last year Head Coach - Tim Weatherald ex Sturt. Not sure who is the new Head Coach but Assistant Coaches in 2019 are pretty good. The continuity of Peter Caven, and Brooke Copeland in Adelaide. Brooke was coach at West Adelaide. Was with Crows in 2017 as Opposition Analyst. Trudi Hopgood Ex Lightning player and Basketball coach located in Darwin. Nick Duigan in Melbourne ex Norwood and Carlton player. Also an Alice Springs coach.

Also VFLW has 23rd player as Rookie where Gore and Rosenweig played limited games prior to drafting.
