Yes luke I understand what England is trying to do ..produce roads to suit there batting line up....6 and out that's how they play and they will suffer from it come the knockout stages

We adapt to the conditions.....not all the pitches are going to be flat as.....this is England not the subcontinent.....there will be cloud cover rain...the ball will swing...we have the bowlers to exploit it

As I said previously if it is dry and flat we pick the team most suited to those conditions

As I said don't be shocked if it doesn't swing. I'm not picking a side to deal with swing bowling. I'm picking a side to score runs against the spinners who generally bowl the middle overs. It's why I'm not a fan of Stoinis one bit. If we need a fast bowling AR, pick MMarsh, at least he's not hopeless against spin.

Luke you pick a team that adapts to the conditions provided be that spin or swing

I don't believe you are just picking a team for just spin bowling...we are not going to get 50 overs of spin in England..

I understand that spin can play a major factor in the middle orders and we have the assets to combat that in the likes of Maxwell handscomb s marsh when in form and now Turner....but seam/pace/swing...will play a major role in England.

Yes I understand that some pitches are going to be flat....but I guarantee that not all 9 round games plus knockout games/finals are going to be batting roads...there will be times that there will be a bit of juice in the wicket.....we can exploit that with our very balanced attack

For it to swing/seam you need favourable conditions bit of cloud cover moisture in the air and a favourable wicket ..green damp etc...BUT you also need bowlers with the ability to swing and seam it.....we have Starc a proven ODI bowler who can swing it with the new ball.......Cummins who gets it going off the seam.....and Richardson who is a natural swing bowler who bowls with a great seam position for one so young

Our spinners are okay...Zampa has shown he can go for a bit but he does take wickets and Lyon has a good record and understands how to bowl in England

Our allrounders are okay....stoinis and Maxwell bowl aright...I agree that stoinis needs to get a move on with his batting but he does have talent/ability

Add that with two gun ODI players returning in Smith and warner....plus guys starting to show form

We have the tools to win it....and I reckon other teams are getting nervous :)

So a 15 man squad?

Ill put my best 11, other 4 squad players and a couple of others just outside it just in case we take 17 or something. I will try to justify why. There are a couple of guys that I like but I don't see a realistic chance of the selectors selecting them, eg. Wade, Short, Head, etc

Best 11

1. Warner. At his best one of the best One Day players in the world. Obvious huge question marks with missing a year and coming off an injury. Will have the first shot here.
2. Khawaja. Form just too good to ignore. Only a few games ago I wouldn't have had him here but showing his class the last couple of games. back in form after a very difficult summer.
3. S Smith. Marsh extremely unlucky but Smith will be given first go. Same question marks as Warner but superstar at his best.
4. Handscombe. Perfect spot for him. Definite argument that him and Smith are too similar but i think Handscombe is a class player. Also a wicketkeeping option (see below)
5. Maxwell. Good spot for him here to accelerate the innings while still having enough time to build an innings. Part time bowling option and star fielder
6. Stoinis. Here for the all round medium/fast bowling option. Needs to relearn the abilty to hit from ball one of it is a flat pitch or if the top order is doing really well
7. Carey (WK). Walking on eggshells selection wise. I prefer a specialist keeper in one day games but Handscombe is good enough so the squad has the flexibility of putting the gloves on Handscombe and adding in an extra specialist bat.
8. Starc. Obviously fitness permitting. Close to best in the world at his best.
9. Cummins. Our best bowler. No real need to justify selection here.
10. Jhye Richardson. He has basically jumped from nowhere in the past 6 months or so. i thought he had talent but was still a few years away from international selection. Boy was I wrong. Has been getting the best in the world out (Kholi) consistently and has been very consistent for such a young guy.
11. Zampa. Our best spin bowler.

Rest of World Cup Squad
12. Finch. Will go to the world cup imo but Warner coming in and rewarding Khawaja form keeps him out of the best 11. If Handscombe takes the gloves, he could easily be top 3 with Warner and Khawaja or could replace Warner if he struggles.
13. S Marsh. Back up middle order bat.
14. Coulter-Nile. Back up paceman. Him instead of Behrendorff due to Coulter-Nile being a better batsman and fielder
15. Lyon. Back up spinner

Extra guys in case they take a 17 man squad
16. Behrendorff. Best one day paceman outside this squad
17. Turner. Great finisher.

Other notes
-Hazelwood and K Richardson. Wouldn't be at all shocked if either or both of these guys play the first game at the world cup but imo J Richardson, Coulter-Nile and Behredorff are ahead.
-If Finch is not best 11, I have no idea who the official captain will be. You could officially name someone like Khawaja or Carey but on field have Smith running the show?

Good post.If Finch not in the 11 surely Maxwell would be captain. The selectors have to make a hard decision shortly on who is captain of this team as we need a captain who will be playing every game.Personally I would stick with Finch but still have reservations about that.

Turner misses out after last night's display?

Turner misses out after last night's display?

Maybe? First time he has performed at international level..I think. Was only in the team with Stoinis' injury with Warner and Smith still to come back in. If he keeps doing it, he will definitely be in the mix. I guess the question is that if he is in, who out the batsmen above will miss out? Or you could have him in instead of Lyon but the risk with that is that there is major lack of flexibility in the bowling line up. I'm just glad I am not a selector because whatever they do, it will be considered wrong by some people. Impossible to please everybody.

Geez, couple of bad innings and people are punting SMarsh (story of his career). He’s been the form bat for 12 months. He should be ahead of Handscomb and Khawaja, regardless of the last couple of innings.
The selectors have some incredibly tough decisions to make. Even a 15-man squad seems to be too little

Always will be the whipping boy in the eyes of many, never needs to slip much for the boots to start been stuck in. But at the moment I guess we are in a reasonably fortunate position of having some very capable batsman who are making good contributions. Combine that with the likely high profile returns anticipated from Smith & Warner (which to be honest I am sceptical on without a proper lead in for them)and there aren't really any unquestionable spots in the batting lineup.

we wont be taking 17.

each team is restricted to 15 players.

turner is now on the radar after the other night, but there are still 6 odi's to go - whether he plays them all time will tell.

he still has work to do to leapfrog a few of the others.

what is it with people picking carey on the bench ? he's either in the XI or not in the 15.

your squad looks pretty accurate though.

I think it would be a risk to put hands comb as keeper. I understand that he keeps in jlt and big bash, but he should be allowed to focus on his batting imo. Although the plus side to him keeping is we can bring another all rounder in the team.

I think finch needs a game off in UAE, just to get some rest and to see how someone like Maxwell or Cummins goes with captaining.

Finch needs a good rest, not just a game here and there. I'd be happy with Khawaja captaining.

a rest? from what?

he either plays or gets dropped.

he can have 10 weeks rest in a couple of weeks time.

Honestly he looks burnt out, giving him a few weeks to refresh would be a good thing. The single most stupid thing we did was allow him to play in the Big Bash- he should have been told to rest, go away and do't think about cricket for a few weeks. He looks like a player that is emotionally and physically spent.

yeah not so sure about that mate.

end of the day the whole sandgate issue has put us in disarray (including captaincy issues), and he may have been dropped if smith was about , but we may still surprise come the world cup.

Be honest you just want to get rid of Finchy!

We need to hope he comes good, he's still our best opener behind Warner. The problem is it is getting tricky to carry players.
