Greater Western Sydney have placed the ball firmly in the court of gun duo Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio as they prepare for the inevitable onslaught of offers from rival clubs in the coming months.
Both players, pivotal in the club’s quest for a historic first premiership and named as vice-captains for this season, have been given the option of signing long- or short-term deals, with the Giants more confident than ever before that the pair will remain at the club.
No doubt we will have a go at those players, Taranto is one who I think we would be interested in as well.
Forget the name Stocker and just look at the types we have.
Seems to me we have a surplus of those that are predominantly key inside mids.
If for instance Stocker proved to be slightly better than Kennedy, pushing Kennedy back to play reserves and simply be a 'back-up' player, have we really achieved a lot. This has nothing to do with Adelaide and given our rating of Stocker, we did the right thing, but still....
Every club brings in youth via drafts, but targeted mid recruits aren't brought in just to be back-ups.
Flip the question around and let's ask, was Kennedy a mistake? Not you, because the answer is already obvious (settle down ) but does our midfield need Stocker and Kennedy? I just don't 'feel' it, nor see it.........yet.
I sort of look at it this way:Think these days you need to have a depth in every line if possible, we know they can’t all play at once, but injury and form can make a mockery of things on paper, IMO we need a good group of around 10-12 players capable of running through the midfield and then try different combinations till we find out what works best for us, having healthy competition for spots is also critical to building a good list.
Stocker and Kennedy are both big bodied inside mids, but they do bring other things to the table, Kennedy’s game seems to be based on really crackin in and doing the hard stuff, he struggled last year due to injury, but he still impressed me with the way he threw his body around to put a smother on or put a block on for team mate, couldn’t fault the effort, could be a good role player.
Stocker has that electric speed out of the stoppage and dual sided disposal, very similar to Shiel, maybe SOS felt that was a type we needed to add.
Hell I’d take Stocker just based on how he carries himself in interviews, he sounds so confident and driven, but isn’t arrogant or figjam, will give himself every chance
I sort of look at it this way:
Big bodied, inside, heavy lifting: Cripps, Kennedy
Tall inside mid/fwd: Setterfield, Silvagni
Solid build, inside burst: Dow, Stocker
Tagger/def mid: Curnow, Cottrell*
Inside/Outside: Petrevski-Seton, Lang
Balanced (wing/more outside role/HFF): Murphy, Fisher, Cuningham
Wing: Walsh**, O'Brien, Pickett***
Mid/small pressure fwd: Gibbons, Polson
*Thinking maybe Cottrell could become the specialist tagging successor to Ed? Although will be harder to get a run in our midfield by the time Cottrell is ready, perhaps we won't have a designated tagger and will just have our first choice mids apply defensive pressure.
**Walsh to move more inside in time as he puts some size on, for now he's a winger for mine.
***Probably more hope than anything based in logic...
That's 18 players and aside from Ed and Murph they're all under 24. There's also a pretty good spread of player types, although I wouldn't mind another runner or nimble mid/fwd type in there, particularly if Pickett doesn't sort his **** out. Will be interesting to see how hard we go at the Billings, Martin, etc types post season.
Quite a few are going to have to miss out on game day, obviously, but we might have the ability to tailor our composition based on the opposition. If it's going to be particularly combative, at the coalface stuff, then maybe we play all/most of Cripps, Kennedy, Setterfield, Silvagni, Dow, Stocker. Similarly if we want some more run/spread then we want to make sure that we've got more of the Walsh, O'Brien, SPS, Fisher, Cuningham types.... fingers crossed Pickett can recover, get fit, stay on the list for next year, then become that top-end speed, line-breaking winger we'd love to see him become.
Hey Soap, love the enthusiasm and keen to hear who you believe comes out of the team for all these guys to get the games you mentioned? Some opinion/hopes for this year
I think Kerr Macreadie Williamson LOB Stocker TDK will be in the side by second half of the year and make a real difference to side and give a different (improved) look to the list
Gibbons to play more on ball
Schumacher to debut at some stage
Goddard to play at least 8 games
Younger players will get breaks under Russell. More about quality than purely quantity. Around 15 games for Dow LOB Walsh Setterfield is perfect
Will add Sam Fisher at some stage. Too good to pass up. Other option is Mason Blakey
BSOS to show a lot at VFL level
then:
I think we need to add 1 or 2 quality readymade mids to our list. Need the mature body help
Need to target a Ruckman

Thanks Soap. I guess it will come down to fitness and injuries as well as who can develop the quickest. There's more than enough talent to fill the 22 spots so it will be somewhat of a race i think. The kids that are willing to work hard, show their hunger to learn and improve are likely the ones to get the first opportunities but there will certainly be others nipping at their heels.Hi Yubby
Don’t really know and that’s what’s great. I also don’t care who it is. I’m just happy I can see more than 30 players on our list that could be genuine best 22. We have the talent now it’s just development and injury. The last couple of VFL games have really impressed me. Will be better next year when we add another 5-6 quality readymade players.
Depth and competition for spots is absolutely vital IMO. First time in 20 years I could say that about us.
Doesn’t really answer your question but best I can do
Cheers

The fabled 3rd year mid jump does seem apparent for Taranto.Looking at it right now Taranto vs Coniglio is potential vs proven form. Taranto has the potential to an A grade midfielder but Coniglio has proven form as an A grade midfielder. A players trade value and salary should be on there proven form not there potential. There have been a lot of cases where a player was traded on potential and has never lived up to it and clubs have burnt top picks on average player. In saying that IMO by the end of year Taranto could have proven form, he's ready for a break out year.
And it's gotta be relationship advice questions.I’m seeing a thread entitled Ask Soapy V

Who do they replace?
Kerr and TDK into a forwardline of Charlie, McKay and McGovern???
Could be anyone. Form, fitness, development etc. I know whatever side we name next week it will look very different come the end of the year
Sure, but our best 3 forwards: Charlie, McKay and McGovern are fairly consensus by now. Barring injury, it's unlikely that Charlie and McGovern lose their spot. McKay looks better this year too but he'd be the one to feel pressure from TDK and Kerr. Good problem to have, with 6 strong-ish KPFs now.
Seniors: Charlie, McGovern, McKay
VFL: TDK, Kerr, Casboult
Yes, that is the hope. Or at least not miss more than 2-4 games.Do you think all three will play 22 games each? TDK can play ruck, Kerr in defence, McGovern in defence, Charlie wing or on ball. Lot to play out yet
