132k members, 214k waiting to join and they still can't organise 25k of them to show up to a Prelim Final.

58% of them didn't go more than twice to any event in a year. Social status chasing w***ers.

Also, 'Other 1.4%' would it have killed them to list the 4 teams?

That's an incredible stat. If anything, it shows how cheap it is.

Lots can be read into it really.

I'd put it down to a mixture of the price 'cheap', and the difficulty in regaining membership if you ever let it lapse (another 30 years on the wait list). If you couldn't, or didn't want to go for a few years, you'd still pay just to hold your place.

Would be interesting to see what would happen if they let members drop their membership and when they wanted to renew put them at the head of the queue...You could see a lot more turnover.

That said, if they did that, they probably wouldn't be able to have as many members in total (if a noticeably higher % turned up to events, that could cause problems given they have a fixed amount of space).

Victorian Government should disband it.

$600 or so a year to attend every AFL Grand Final until 2057 (and probably forever). Any non-grand final they attend is just icing on the cake.

Cheap as *. If they had to pay anything resembling its true worth the numbers would drop right off.

On what basis would the Victoria government commit the highly illegal act of disbanding it?

Given it's only a few games a year where access is an issue, why bother?

Victorian Government own the MCG. Contract the administration to somebody else.

They own the land via MCG Trust. The leasehold improvements ie $120m Great Southern Stand and $434m northern stands are owned by the MCC.

There is very little that is actually illegal for state governments.

The Vic 'constitution' is really just an act of parliament, which can (and has) been amended to suit the government of the day on a number of occasions.

Should be entertaining to watch the MCC try and take away the stands if they were kicked off the land.

In all seriousness, presumably they've got a long term lease granted by the government that would be difficult to break.

From memory, there are 2 contracts in play.

The MCG Trust (which is a semi government body, with the trustees appointed by the government) has a lease on the land (Yarra park) from the state government.

The MCC has a contract with the MCG trust to operate the MCG and surrounding parkland.

---------

The MCC reserve (and AFL reserve) are probably part of the deal between the trust and the MCC (although I suppose in theory the MCC, as ground manager, could handle that itself...).

It exists (only?) because it holds the management rights to the MCG, the rights are a gift from the taxpayer through the MCG Trust, they are not market tested.

The MCC is a suburban cricket club that competes in the Victorian grade cricket comp under the auspices of the VCA (WA equivalent is Perth Cricket Club in the WACA comp). In its role as ground manager it employs 120 odd people & is a Victorian institution.

There was a time that cricket drew big crowds everywhere, today not so ..... if the Vic Govt put the management rights out to tender the wait list for the cricket club would be dubious?
No management rights, no GF entitlement .... why wouldnt you just join your footy club as fans do everywhere bar Melbourne.

Being picky, no MCG Trust appointee should be a member of the MCC - in a former life & tendering on service for the G our meetings involved reps of both the MCC & the Trust.

In practicality, it wouldn't matter whether they're MCC members or not. Trustees are in the MCC Committee Room any event they want (and for some of them it's a lot). Never seen any of them bother to sit anywhere else in the ground.

Yes on all counts, in this era of governance, a deal that is not market tested, the sweetheart deal over the GF deal, the MCG management scenario would battle to pass independent scrutiny IMHO, but its academic, it'd take non Vic AFL clubs banding together to put it on the national agenda to rock the good boat sweetheart deal.

What you're talking about used to happen, members could decline and rejoin the front of the queue when they wanted. From memory this stopped around the time of the Commonwealth Games when the club took on a larger intake and wanted to guarantee enough revenue to would fund the redevelopment.

It costs more than $600 to hold an MCC membership that doesn't provide entry to the GF. AFL Gold membership is a cheaper way to gain access to the GF.

What are the fees for the 3 categories - Full, Restricted and Provisional??

Having looked into it, turns out I was off a bit, probably due to recently paying the upgrade to full member fee, as well as my Richmond membership add-on. $695 for full, $544 for restricted (everything but the GF), $349 for provisional (no finals, no Boxing Day, no ANZAC Day/Dreamtime/QB/etc.).

How does this work/cost ?

I paid for it in September so my memory is hazy. Gist is it's an MCC specific membership, about $90 for access to a reserved seat on level 2 for our one home game at Marvel. Beyond that everything else is pretty much the same (cap/scarf, voting rights, VFL game access at Punt Rd, store discount, etc.).

There's also one for about half that which comes without the game at Marvel. My understanding is that variety of add-on is (or at least was) the only type that Collingwood offer. Other clubs I don't know, though considering Essendon's situation at Etihad I doubt they'd get matchday access.

The Tiges: https://www.mcc.org.au/my-mcc-membership/dual-membership-options/richmond

Pretty cheap, whats in it for the Tiges? $1.09 plus another member for the peeing comp that is the highest membership number*.

* disclose my conflict on this:

Membership & Ticket Sales

  • West Coast - $34,700,713
  • Richmond - $29,645,214 (includes Merchandise)
  • Collingwood - $23,871,536
  • Adelaide - $21,497,388
  • Fremantle - $20,659,207
  • Geelong - $18,055,330
  • Hawthorn - $17,809,149
  • Essendon - $16,098,158
  • Melbourne - $15,190,267
  • Carlton - $11,295,680
  • St Kilda - $9,216,131
  • Western Bulldogs - $9,206,996
  • North Melbourne - $8,035,194
  • Gold Coast - $7,301,203
  • Brisbane - $6,057,458
  • GWS - $4,418,738 (includes merch)
Happy to concede there is no consistency about how these numbers are put together, at West Coast seated members are the real ticket, the In The Wings members are basically waiting list.

$50 each for essentially another few thousand caps or scarves would be a pretty handy margin. Once you're already ordering 70k, those extras probably come pretty cheap. Money for nothing really.

Take this year for example, I'm away at Easter so won't be able to use the Marvel game (may give it to a friend though), club gets the full $90 and provide very little in return.

Wonder if or what Richmond charge the MCC ?

Not a fan of the cricket clubs use of footy at the expense of the Melbourne AFL clubs, worse than the AFL members IMHO.
