Round 5, 2018 (versus North Melbourne): Brought into the team for the first time in 2018, Cousins responded with a 17 disposal game as a depth midfielder. Although the Hawks went down to the Kangaroos by 28 points at Etihad Stadium, Cousins' performance was good enough to keep him in the team for a couple of weeks.

Round 9, 2018 (versus Brisbane Lions): After missing round 8, Cousins was back in the team against the Lions but didn't fire a shot, with only eight disposals for the match. Although he did lay five tackles, the Hawks believed (with justification) that Cousins needed to go back to Box Hill to develop his game further.
