Crows - The Rebuild

I hope when Eddie retires we offer him a coaching role, starting with the SANFL squad.

Very smart football brain and we've seen what came of his mentoring of Cameron.

I normally don't like us employing ex players but he's one I'd make an exception for.

Plus it would allow him to continue to be such a good ambassador for our club.
I'm OK with ex-players in some development roles, it's when they're immediately put into higher AFL roles I don't like.

And honestly, and coach worth his weight and who wants to improve will go look at another club. Thompson knew this and went to Port, Rutten knew and went to Richmond and now Essendon, VB knew and went to West Coast. Not to turn it into another one of those threads, but the fact that Campo hasn't tells you how he sees the job, it's just a 9-5 to him and if he was super serious about being a senior coach, or improving his skills he'd of gone years ago to learn at another club.

Yes but Eddie seems to want to stay in Adelaide and can you really see him going to port after all the racist taunts from their supporters?

He's said previously he'll go back to Victoria and become a school teacher or something like that. I get the feeling he'd be more interested in helping out in indigenous communities than becoming an AFL/SANFL coach.

Are we actually in year 2 of a 7 year rebuild? If thats the case, in a perfect world should the following be retired at the end of the year?

Mackay
Douglas
Tex
Eddie
Jenkins
Sauce

If we are in a rebuild, does that mean we f**ked up big time by getting Gibbs for 2 first rounders and then to using all our 4 first and early second rounders in a super draft? The powers that be will never admit it even if it’s true

It's easier to say in hindsight, but coming off a grand final it was the right move. No different than the Pies grabbing Beams this year. You want to go one step further you need to get better.

We dont need to rebuild the list. We need to rebuild their heads. We just HAVE to get some confidence happening. Easier said than done.
Its still broken from the GF and collective minds. Its going to be tough to get it back. Saturday, its was a repeat of the GF. Fumbles, missing targets & clangers from the get go in horrendous proportions.

If their confidence is shot, then you'll need to rebuild the list.

I believe this year is our last chance for a premiership with this group. I don’t believe we will get there.
I’m not a pessimist and saying this due to our round one loss. I think that this group, mentally, does not have what it takes. It means that a proper clean out is actually needed. Sloane and Talia from the old brigade have the right mindset, but I think the other elders are mentally floored.

If I had it my way I would move on Tex, Lynch, Douglas, McKay, Betts, Gibbs and Jacobs. From the younger lot I would trade on Atkins, Hartigan and Kelly. Yes I know this won’t happen etc etc, but I think these players are a problem for our team.

Douglas, Betts, Mackay and Jacobs are all chances to be done regardless of how we go this year. Kelly is still a chance to leave again anyway. Hartigan fills a role unless you can find another KPD who is ready to go. Atkins is the same as a lot of outside players. Tex and Lynch aren't going anywhere.

Just looking at our out of contract players on Footywire

Alex Keath 4 Non-Free Agent
Andy Otten 12 Unrestricted Free Agent
Ben Davis 3 Non-Free Agent
Cameron Ellis-Yolmen 8 Restricted Free Agent
David MacKay 13 Unrestricted Free Agent
Hugh Greenwood 4 Non-Free Agent
Jake Kelly 6 Non-Free Agent
Jordon Butts 1 Non-Free Agent
Kieran Strachan 1 Non-Free Agent
Lachlan Murphy 2 Non-Free Agent
Patrick Wilson 2 Non-Free Agent
Paul Hunter 4 Non-Free Agent
Reilly O'Brien 5 Non-Free Agent
Richard Douglas 14 Unrestricted Free Agent
Riley Knight 6 Non-Free Agent
Sam Jacobs 9 Restricted Free Agent
Tyson Stengle 1 Non-Free Agent

I believe we gave Stengle a 3 year deal when we traded for him, so I don't think he's OOC, but of that lot i'd only list Keath and Greenwood as must keeps. Kelly, CEY and Murphy might be nice for depth, but i'm not the biggest Knight fan around, so wouldn't be super duper upset if he left.

Need to find out on Hunter and ROB though.

Then looking at OOC players elsewhere i'd look at guys like

Archie Smith (though Stef Martin is getting old so i'm sure the Lions will be able to keep him)
Rhys Mathieson
Callum Ah Chee
Peter Wright
Harrison Himmelberg
Jacob Hopper
Billy Stretch
Ivan Soldo
Lukas Webb

Rucks and KPD's are going to be priority areas in the trade and draft periods surely. For the first time in a while we're pretty light on for utility/third tall types too.

Jayzuz …………. going a bit early on a couple of those aren't you ?? o_O

After a first round loss you want to get rid of some important players on your list and replace them with players straight from the draft ??

That's crazy talk especially when you have to consider that Jacobs is your only mature age & proven ruckman on the list. Betts has some more good footy in him and surely Walker isn't a total wash-up yet too.

It's a long season, anything can & will happen so revisit the subject around RD 10, at least by then you will have a clearer picture to work with.

Every replacement player you mentioned is either untried or unproven at this level. Even if we look at it positively and say ALL will be direct replacement for the oldies, it will take 4-5 years before they could play at the same level as the 2017 performances of the oldies i mentioned.
Thats correct. Most on that list of replacements will be about 24-25 years of age and in their prime. Pity is that players like Jarman and Edwards didnt make it.

Anyway for me I think this thread is a bit premature. Its only round one. Lets wait and see what the Crows can throw up in the next 4 rounds (Swans, Cats{great test}, Roos and Suns) and then start making some more informed judgements. I accept that some of our key players are getting long in the tooth but dont write them off for 2019.

If you're not going to win the premiership than you should be in rebuild mode, building towards your next premiership. As much as i was kidding myself thinking we were a chance this year (bloody positivity), because of age and the continued player exodus, our starting 22 is much weaker than it was in 2017.

Exactly. The window slammed shut on this group that miserable day at the G in 2017.
In all honesty, I've always felt that this playing list were playing above their ability when making it that far and that's why you wont hear me knock Pykes coaching,as I think he way overachieved with the cattle he had. Now that cattle are old, mentally shot, devoid of the unity and motivation bought about through the passing of their previous coach, and not a larrys hope in hell of getting back to contender standard.

We won't rebuild though. We haven't recruited to rebuild ober the past 2 seasons. We have recruited to fill areas of need with the hope to contend again.
If we were in a rebuild we should have been selling some of our older stock, starting last year, whilst they still had some value.
Too late now unless someone radical takes the reigns at Westlakes.

Be content with top 8 finishes until the next "new coach" spike occurs or a major shift in thinking comes about from those bloodlines who run this club.
Pyke, the poor bastard, is done. He wont be given a chance to "rebuild". Its not how we roll.

You cant play above your ability you can only play to your ability whether you can achieve that again is the problem

WE clearly have players having reached their physical peak now are on the decline due to age injuries what ever

Our list has clearly not been replenished with replacements capable of taking over the reins

Who's fault is that

I expect Brett Burton will be the answer or maybe Campo

We’ve brought in Milera, Doedee, Gooch, Fog, Jones and Ned and have a chance at an even higher pick this year....

And that doesn’t take into account for other non 1st round draftees.

None of which we know yet if they are capable of taking over from Betts, Talia, Tex, Sauce, Sloane, but lets hope they can, because if not the cupboard will be bare

As always your logic is flawless. I should have written - "all playing at max ability" which still wasn't good enough but is still a huge achievement.
