Crows - The Rebuild

We’ve brought in Milera, Doedee, Gooch, Fog, Jones and Ned and have a chance at an even higher pick this year....

And that doesn’t take into account for other non 1st round draftees.

Besides Fogarty, we haven't drafted the type you build a team around.

Bolded are contracted, so no, they won't be retired.

We are also not in year 2 of a 7 year rebuild. We're in a contention window, though, one that sits on life support in that the end of this year decides for us if it is time to pull the plug, or persist.
Our condition isn’t yet terminal. We still can turn this around. It’s only flu signs so far, not yet the full blown pneumonia.

Throw in a Gibbs and to a lesser extent Jenkins. We need to blood more of the younger guys.
We are well positioned this year to draft a top mid who may be the gibbs replacement. We should seriously make a play to trade for harry himmelberg as he could make an ideal ff for us going forward. Haggis and the list management team have been thinking ahead and i think we have plenty of options going forward to keep us very competitive

im glad you think are competitive

This season? Absolutely it can be rectified as there is a high chance that could be attributed to Hawks being our bogey team.

For this core though, no, they have to bounce back otherwise we need to properly start that rebuild/restructure.

Rebuild????

We arent Carlton!!!

As usual we will have turnover of players at the end of the year, but certainly no rebuild.

McKay, Douglas and Jacobs to retire and offload a few depth players as we have over the past years.
I’m not sure turnover is usual.

Our core PG is very static.

Of the 2015 semi final side flogged by Hawthorn, 15 either played Saturday or are still on the list.

Of the 2016 semi final side flogged by Sydney, 16 either played Sat or are still on the list.

Of the 2017 side that put up one of the most pitiful performances in club history v North at Blundstone - 19 either played on Sat or are still on the list.

And 20 of the ugly 2017 GF side either played Sat of are still on the list.

It’s pretty hard to maintain Sat was a shock result when the bulk of your side has that kind of CV.

As supporters we criminally underrated the opposition and overrated our side.

This is the 5th year the core of this PG will be supposedly challenging. They are just about out of time

Next season I think we will lose Dougie, Dmac, Otten and Sauce from those lists. Plus I could see guys like Hartigan, Kelly, and Atkins either moving on or being moved on for more opportunity. The flush out is a year too late for some, but I feel like its inevitable!

For the record I think there is a big difference between "Flushing out of older/fringe players" and "rebuilding the list".

Seems like an pretty severe overreaction... Or what BF posters call, 'the standard reaction to any loss'

Absolutely spot on. Very well put!

Are we actually in year 2 of a 7 year rebuild? If thats the case, in a perfect world should the following be retired at the end of the year?

Mackay
Douglas
Tex
Eddie
Jenkins
Sauce
Add in Otten. Take out Jenkins, he can ruck part time. Trade out Kelly, Atkins, Poholke, ROB, Cey, Lynch. Use the 3 to 4 million salary cap relief to go after Himmelberg from Gws and the best Ruck. Grundy would be ideal. Offer him a million a year if we have to. Use pick 4 or 5 from Carlton to get best gun mid with speed. Move Don Pyke, Campo and Ben Hart out. Don is no coach. Rebuild complete. AFC be honest and pull the ****ing bandaid off.

In summary:
Out
Walker, Jacobs, Douglas, Mackay, Otten, Betts, Kelly, Atkins, Cey, Poholke, Lynch, ROB, Campo, Don Pyke, Hart.

Sidenote:
Gibbs. I would trade him as well but there would be no takers. We are stuck with him. Retire him end of 2020 and payout contract. Last point is about Talia. I feel he is done but may have another year. I would trade in a free agent full back asap.

Team next year:
Brown Talia Doedee
Laird Keath Milera
Seedsman Sloane Smith
Davis Himmelberg(GWS) Knight
Mchenry Fogarty Gallucci

Grundy MCrouch BCrouch

Greenwood, (Pick 4 Carlton), Rankine(Trade from GC), Jones.

****This team would smash our current team by 6 goals plus.****

Depth:
Jenkins, Gibbs, Himmelberg(adelaide one), Butts, Hamill, Hartigan, Mcadam, Hunter, McPherson, Murphy, Scholl, Stengle, Strachan.

Fog could be all that is required if he can become the next Wayne Carey , Matthew Pavlich

Teams can be built around such a gun, those other players can just be the building blocks

Agree to an extent, but you need a spine and preferably one that contains players who can take a grab along with a high I.Q playmaker in the midfield.Who do we have besides Doodee(honest question I don't much follow sanfl). We lost Gov and Lever who could/should have been those players.

I dont believe in rebuilds. I believe in smart trading and drafting.

We don't really do that either. Look what Clarkson has done in 4 years. This is what you mean yeah? Hawks will win another 2 flags at least before we will win one. He shipped off his 2x Premiership winning Captains, nearly 3 and a vice captain because he saw the writing on the wall as soon as it was there. Meanwhile we honor long term contracts and play cooked veterans in front of youth due only to good bloke/servant of the club factor and because "there is no one else ready or good enough" bullshiz.

You don't build teams around 1st and 2nd year players anyway.

You build teams by making lists of strong players across all age groups.

Huh? I'm not suggesting he hold the side up in his 1st or 2nd season. Are you really reading it that way? You build a team around highly talented players on all lines. Then they come of age. I'm not suggesting we ship off everyone over 21.
Put it this way, the Crouch boys will be aging veterans before or during our next legitimate tilt, but they are 2 you hang on to because a) talented b) competitive beasts that will perform in the big dance as well as bringing the lesser lights along with them.

I believe this year is our last chance for a premiership with this group. I don’t believe we will get there.
I’m not a pessimist and saying this due to our round one loss. I think that this group, mentally, does not have what it takes. It means that a proper clean out is actually needed. Sloane and Talia from the old brigade have the right mindset, but I think the other elders are mentally floored.

If I had it my way I would move on Tex, Lynch, Douglas, McKay, Betts, Gibbs and Jacobs. From the younger lot I would trade on Atkins, Hartigan and Kelly. Yes I know this won’t happen etc etc, but I think these players are a problem for our team.
A bit harsh to want to move on half the team that helped us reach to the GF 2 years ago.

Why when they peaked 2 years ago?
What are we waiting for?The 2017 revival tour?
We already let go of 3 key parts, all of whom fell within the ideal "keeper"age range.

Players leaving in FA is not the same as letting go of players. That's like saying in the same time period GWS "let go" of Shiel, Treloar, Wilson, Hoskin Elliot, Kennedy, Smith, Tyson, Scully, Frost, Adams, Plowman, Boyd, Lobb, McCarthy, Marchbank, Steele and Setterfield.

Player movement is a part of football now, the club has next to no control of it, and for all the bad wrap we get, losing only 3 players in 3 years mean's we are actually remarkable good at player retention, especially considering the haul we got in return!

Has anyone ever told you that you have a very scattergun approach of trying to get your point across?
