Review Rd 4: Port vs Richmond

The massive overcorrection we feared this year is in full effect now. Instead of not playing on at all, we now play on after every single mark, in every single situation.

Houston and Boak.
Houston is excelling now with more experience and isn't stuffed by the new rules (as Jonas as a lumbering dinosaur is). The Co-captains experiment has to end next year and Dan should be the Captain. I wish we had two of him, so one could play forward. He would have nailed the shot missed at the end.

Anyone at the Maggie’s that can come in for DBJ?

Ollie, Robbie, Ryder and Motlop absolute puss.
Broady. Lienert possibly Hammer. Seriously consider Farrell and playing Howard as a key forward. He is now to predictable as a spoiling defender and as a fwd would free him up to mark. Not as if he hasn't played fwd in the past. If Lienert doesn't come up then put Westhoff in defence as he couldn't be any bloody worse than what he is producing now and does play that floating role well. Yes he does have a man to mind however he is athletic enough to overcome.

Out:
S Gray - don't care that he kicked 3 goals, structurally he kills us.
W Drew - hard to drop but again is about structure, we can't run with Wines, SPP, Rockliff and Drew together. SPP & Rockliff have been good whilst Wines has the credits in the bank to hold his spot...for now.
S Motlop - he's good when the team is rolling but goes missing when needed. The Geelong dynasty team was perfect for him, a Hinkley led Port not so much.

In:
T Marshall - just play him FFS! direct swap for S Gray
K Farrell - showed enough last season to get a run, can play in the high half forward role that Motlop is meant to be doing.
Broadbent or Hartlett - not a great swap for Drew but we need some more outside users of the ball.

It's bad enough that we can't develop good talls but name the last good small that played for us (and I'm not counting Robbie). You could say Monfries. But then there's a long list that weren't up to it, including Neade, Hitchcock and Phillips. Just one would be nice right now.

Ports always let the most smug, offensive, campaigner of a player stick the knife in.

Lynch, McGovern, Shuey, Stringer, Dangerfield, Jenkins, C. Cameron...

Remember that year Ben Jacobs and Troy Chaplin both kicked winners against us? Should've burnt the club down and started again at that point.

We let Chaplin kick two on us hahaha.

Sydney stacks game was really not that impressive - at least not beyond what we knew about him already.

It's pretty easy for a professional to mark a ball being aimlessly fired in to a forward line with no tall forwards. Many have done it before, sadly we won't learn again, and many will do it again

The scary thing is that WCE specialise in intercept marking in their D50

Just read that Ken blames our attack for the loss. Nothing to do, then, with him not selecting any forwards?
Watching the replay ..
Westhoff marks the ball on the 50 and instead of going back to have a shot at goal, takes off on his arc and makes a bloody stupid pass to no one, which lands about 15m out. :$
Closest Port player was Rozee about 5m away, who had no hope of getting to it, but would have marked it if Westhoff passed to him.
Ellis got it and it ended up as a rushed behind.
You would think Westhoff would have known better. Just a bloody brain fade ..
But geez, how many brain fades did our players have in that game.:$

We were bemoaning guys that we’re a worry after watching Doogs DBJ , Jonas and Bonner there last night from the Riverbank stand where we came to the conclusion , the only one you can trust is Dan Houston to do the right thing . Clurey in there on current form but clangers from the others

It's not a brain fade imo, it's symptomatic of a team with a loser mentality

Spoke to an former Sanfl umpire yesterday about the Burton Free.
He said if the umpire didn't signal 'all clear' before the free then it's either a free kick, down the ground or advantage. He kicked a goal so it would be advantage.
Watch the replay and you'll see the umpire see's the push blows 'time off', gives the all clear and then pays another free.
