Not so sure. I'd back De Boer to stand in if Phil doesn't get up next week. In JLT one when neither captain played De Boer did the job although Cogs played. It could be he doesn't want the job.
Sounds plausible.

He does strike me as a "spiritual leader" of the group though and is pretty vocal onfield as well as leading by example.

Well Leon describes him as the heart and soul of the club. It's hard to know the dynamics if the group from the outside. De Boer puts in a lot of extra work mentoring young guys.

Did they? Think I read somewhere they were looking for a half decent 1st rounder. Seems fair for an elite mid. Bris paid a bucket load more for Neale.

Anyway, think we're getting a bit off topic. I don't think Eagles can afford to pay Kelly and Coniglio, and it seems they have their heart set on Kelly. They're out. Down to GWS, a Melb club or Freo if they come in with a ridiculous offer.

Eagles can afford both.

Front loading here, back loading there.

Its doable.

A couple of tough decisions to be made though. Masten, Schofield, Jetta and getting 50% of Naitanui's new contract outside the cap.

Both Kennedy and Hurn are on 1 yr extensions and will both be over 33 end of next year.

I don’t see how this is any different to the Tom Mitchell situation. Same age, same draft and similar abilities and Mitchell had no hesitation in picking the Hawks. Who’s to say that if Coniglio decides to leave GWS and join a Victorian club that Hawthorn wouldn’t be the front runners?

A few differences. Coniglio isn't Victorian so it's not a return home. Mitchell was also a bit unloved at Sydney after Buddy and Tippett arrived. He wouldn't have his Hawthorn contract if he stayed and he wouldn't necessarily be the #1 mid. If Coniglio wants something GWS won't offer then he won't end up at Hawthorn, he'll end up at s**t club paying overs.

Other than that there is no reason he wouldn't pick the Hawks. Stable, recently successful and have attracted other players. Other than the whole O'Meara bum buddies thing and playing with Scully why would he pick Hawthorn over another Vic side? Shiel picked Essendon, Treloar picked Collingwood. Both of those clubs would be attractive options too. At 26 this year a big motivation will be seeing a team as on the up which you could argue Hawthorn are or aren't, it's just something a player in his position would likely consider.

It’s been well documented that the Hawks need another A-grade midfielder. Now I’m not saying that Coniglio is leaving, he may very well re-sign with GWS on a 5-6 year deal, but I see no reason as to why the Hawks wouldn’t be considered one of the likely destinations.

How about this for a starting midfield...

C: Scully, Mitchell, Smith
R: McEvoy, O’Meara, Coniglio

If Cogs was heading to Vic Carlton is where he should go. Young list with quality kp's at both ends. Have a heap of cap space and would lift them into the a top 8 side with what they already have.

Hawks kp stocks are shakey.

Not really....We've got both Brand & O'Brien as key position defenders waiting in the wing, with Koschitzke in the development stages.

At the other end, both of Nash & Lewis are tracking along just nicely thank you very much.

Though I can see why you'd be worried about Cogs joining all of Jaeger, Mitchell, Worpel, Wingard, Shiels, Smith & Scully in our midfield.....I would be too.

Within 5 years two that I can think of are:

Carlisle
Longer

Hawthorn didn’t miss out on Longer. They opted for McEvoy instead once they knew St Kilda put him on the trade table. What a terrible decision that turned out to be!

Coniglio wants to play with Scully now?

I don't think they are particularly close. Scully and Shiel are, they share a 24/7 dedication to footy that can be almost scary.

Cogs lived with Heater for a long time and they socialise a lot. They're more the "anything but footy" types in their downtime.

He might have chat to him about the Hawks if he was considering moving there, but as O'meara is a mate who knows.

I think GWS re-signing him is the most likely thing to happen here.

Obviously every club would be interested in a player like Coniglio if he does leave. But who has the cash and the picks to satisfy GWS? I know he's a RFA but surely GWS would match any offer if they can.

Can he go home? Ill be surprised if Freo and WCE have the cash but who would've thought Richmond would get Lynch?

Teams like Carlton, North, St Kilda, Sydney and Hawthorn are going to throw big money at him. Maybe even Geelong.

Melbourne, Collingwood and Essendon are unlikely. Richmond no chance. Port? Maybe. Adelaide have the picks but probably dont have the money. Dogs are still paying Boyd millions arent they?

I rate Hawthorn's youth much, much higher than Carlton's. Neither is deep in key position stocks (sorry but I don't rate Curnow or McKay highly) and Hawthorn are doing an excellent job of rebuilding their midfield on the run, and have added Wingard to the mix who is a gun.

I'm actually worried about Gold Coast as a potential destination for Coniglio more than any Victorian club (other than Hawthorn).

As a hawthorn supporter, I can see players retiring or being moved on. Which will open up the cash, to place a competitive offer to someone like Cogs in considering moving to us. While much of the criticism is on the age of our list. I think in the next 3 years we will see the passing of the torch as players such as Roughead, Burgoyne, Birchall, Puoplulo and Henderson and maybe a couple of others retire. What gets overlooked is our current mid range age players that we have acquired, which I put between 23-27. That list contains Wingard, Gunston, Shiels, Sicily, O’Meara, Mitchell, Scully and Impey. That is a great mid range group, to have. You then have the younger players that are below 23 this year in: Hardwick and Worpel. These 2 are the stand outs from that group as they both have cemented their position in the starting 22. In that group you also have Scrimshaw, Nash, Moore, Glass, Cousins and Miles that have potential to become consistent to good players, but they also have the potential to not make it, time will tell. So to say we have an old list and no youth is misleading, Cogs would fit in any side, from a hawthorn point of view adding him to that mid range group would have us contending for the premiership from 2020 onwards.

The issue is wether or not he chooses to stay or head back to Perth to be with family. If he happens to look at a Victorian club, then realistically I can only see Geelong, Carlton, Saints, Essendon and Hawthorn being the only clubs that could afford his services. Gold Coast, and Adelaide being the othe4 2 clubs outside NSW, WA and Vic could be viable options as well.

Personally I think he stays at GWS, on a reduced contract then what he would get elsewhere.

Way to prove Obeanie's point. Don't forget Schoenmakers too.

Brand (panic), O'Brien (intensity), Kozi (Speed), Nash (Football) and Lewis (Stamina) all have massive faults they need to overcome if they are to be anything more than 18-30 ranked players.

Rough is all but done, Frawley is the embodiment of his Uncle's nickname, Gunston and Sicily are flankers only.

Lynch is the one that got away - an outcome I just can not work out.

Talk about a negative Nancy...Why not just paint things in the worst light possible next time....Sheeesh…..Sure you support Hawthorn mate?

Brand is good enough & just needs regular senior football & the coaches to back him....O'Brien's abilities are fine, he just needs to hold his marks....While Nash & Lewis are both 20 & in only their second season of football.

You are so predictable.

That happens when looking through rose coloured (in your case pee and poo coloured) glasses.

Also very entertaining to read........and bait!

Take the glasses off mate ......you will go blind!

I know tell us about Paton saving your forward kp stocks.

You would have to lump Shiel into the basket of the ones that got away. Wouldn't need to be fret over where Cogs ends up, if in fact he goes anywhere.

Hawthorn has better youth than Carlton? McKay and C.Curnow not that good? I can’t tell if serious or sarcasm. :$
