Sydney Swans Academy won the NAB League’s ‘battle of the bridge’ on Saturday, blitzing their western rivals in an awesome second half to come out 59-point winners. Trailing at the main break, the Swans came out firing in the third term to put through a sensational seven goals to the Giants’ two – turning an eight-point deficit into a 23-point lead heading into the final turn. It was more of the same from Sydney to see the game out, keeping the GWS academy goalless while they poured on another five goals to consolidate the big win. Braeden Campbell was super with an equal game-high three goals from his 13 disposals, with Harrison Parker also slotting three of his own among nine individual goal kickers. Jackson Barling was the Swans’ major ball winner with 20 disposals, leading from Samuel Thorne (18, six tackles), but beaten out by GWS stars Tom Green (25 disposals, six marks, one goal) and Jackson Peatling (24 disposals, seven marks, six inside 50s, five tackles, two goals). Liam Delahunty also chimed in with two majors to join Peatling as a multiple goal scorer in an otherwise hard day for the Giants. Moving on to established NAB League opponents, GWS travels to Melbourne to face Northern Knights next week, with Sydney facing Sandringham Dragons on the same day in a double-header.

Green looks an extremely exciting prospect with his contested ball and clearance work being the highlights. Smart player, gets to the right spots and very mobile around stoppages with high possession numbers. Clean and quick with his hands. However, lacks penetration in his kicking and often turns the ball over by foot. Understand it is hard to be effective in the guts as he often is, but is an area he could definitely work on given a full-time team environment next year. Offensively hunts the ball well, but defensively feel he could tackle and chase the man more. Watching footage from the game against Brisbane, he often jogs behind players when the ball gets turned over but this criticism could be said for a number of AFL players too. Has good upper body strength, but has the potential to get stronger and break more tackles. Good speed but lacks genuine acceleration to break away from the contest. Of the players he may project to be, likely either a Josh P. Kennedy (most likely in my opinion, JPK stronger but really like-for-like at this point), Oliver (needs to be faster and more adept by hand) or Cripps (needs more acceleration, stronger upper body and more effective with disposals) type. Dont think he has quite the class and kicking finesse of a Bontempelli, but who knows. Would be interested to see his tackle count and disposal efficiency statistics from the NAB League Brisbane game if anyone knew. Nevertheless, really looking forward to see how he develops this year!

Comments from Knightmare on the 2 Academy players that were in the AFL Academy game v Casey VFL

Presenting up strongly at the football and reading the drop of the ball superbly, Greater Western Sydney Academy key forward Liam Delahunty was the Under-18s' go-to option on forward drives. In the first half like a lot of his teammates he appeared nervy and uncharacteristically dropped marks he would usually take but his hands during the second half became surer.

Giving the Under-18s first use at stoppages, Thomas Green was industrious. Green may be the most advanced and dominant stoppage specialist to come through the junior ranks but just as importantly he showed other tricks. With ball in hand, Green demonstrated composure and on one play used a fake to avoid a tackle to create time and space on the move and hit his intended target by foot inside 50m. One of his groundball pickups was freakish for a strongly built midfielder of 190cm, picking the ball up cleanly on the move over his toes. His showing of support for a teammate who was roughly tackled onto the synthetic turf was a further pleasing sign - bumping into the tackler and making it clear he would have no more of that to his more seasoned Casey foe.

Question for the group - At what pick wouldn't GWS match a bid for Green?
(nb: he isn't a 'go home' risk)

I have faith the recruiters will understand his potential after 5+ years in the academy and the NEAFL games he will play and will either trade up to make the pick or they will ensure they have the points to match + others for other players

Think we'd likely match any bid. We have the two first round picks this year, and i am not seeing another standout academy selection. Unlikely anyone bids #1 on him (the implications of being trumped for first pick in the AFL theatre) and could cover #2 downwards.

Jeromy Lucas will be making his debut this week for Oakleigh, keen to see how he goes without Rowell and Anderson there he was played on the wing earlier in the year with practise matches but dominated for the Giants Academy as a pure midfielder.

23d and 6t for Lucas so a good start for him

No denying that Green is a great prospect and that Chris Doerre is a good eye on talent but has a history of talking up some Giants academy prospects and some others, for example the hype he gave for Lukosis last year and still too early to doubt him but Rozee is looking like a no 1 pick at this stage IMO
Still it will be interesting to see how the draft unfolds at the end of the year
