Cant over turn the result.

Nothing stopping Myers (or whoever got the free at the top of the square) from spraying it and missing.

Gotta be fines/suspensions Id say.

It would’ve been on the goal line itself, not the top of the square. Basically would’ve taken it from where the Goal Umpire stands

Still possible for him to miss technically, but anyone who’s missing from there probably doesn’t have much of a future in the sport.

Myers is pretty shizen anyway, surprised he's lasted this long on an AFL list.

One of the nicest blokes you’ll meet and the only reason why I suspect the Essendon players genuinely didn’t think the injections were wrong.

Shame his career is going downhill quickly this year after a strong 2018.

This could be like that sirengate game in tassie where Essendon challenge the result

Clearly a free kick should have been given to Essendon on the goal line and massive **** up from the umpires not knowing the rules
You could argue that the umpire did know the rules - otherwise why would he have told Rampe to get down?

The AFL have ****ed up completely by saying they are happy with the umpire's decision to give Rampe a warning. The rules say what it is - it's a free kick. Obviously that does not mean the goal would have been kicked and so Essendon would have no more case to overturn the result than any other contentious free/non-free at a critical stage of the game. It is so ****ing bizarre that they just shrug their shoulders and say 'yeah nah we're happy with that' when the umpire has clearly spotted the infringement and paid the incorrect penalty.

We're never going to see 100% correct decisions 100% of the time so most reasonable people would be OK with the AFL issuing a mea culpa (I think), especially for a rule that is not well known and where the result can't be challenged anyway. Just say it was a screw up and move on. It is this kind of go with the vibe shit that that the AFL does constantly which destroys their integrity.

That's definitely the most frustrating bit. The game is already suffering from too many 50/50 interpretations and ticky touchwood rules, but this one is blatant and absolutely no doubt about it, so for the AFL to call that one correct is pathetic.

"I don't have a problem with it but a different umpire may have called it." is both the AFL's preferred get out of jail free card and an utter indictment on the officiation of the game. If two umpires can have different views on the legality of the same action, then something is wrong.

Look at the crowd Sydney pull when not winning - on Friday night which is the most popular in this town. You dont think the AFL is a rigerous sporting comp do you?

I often think that they should go through a remove as much ambiguity out of the game as possible. I can't think of many other sports that have so many rules that rely on the umpire having to be a mind reader (deliberate out of bounds, rushed behind etc).

Umpire saw an infringement but did not pay the free. Nothing new here. Happens double digit times in every game.
This one had zero effect on the actual contest and therefore is the easiest to forgive IMO.

I’m sick to death of the AFL/umpires ticking everything off. Admit you made a mistake. It’s not hard, and it goes a long way to restoring faith in the umpiring system.

In the NBA, they release a report after every single game detailing all the calls and non-calls in the final two minutes, plus whether they were correct or not. Oftentimes there’s a few incorrect calls per game, they don’t fudge the books to make themselves look good. When they make a mistake they at least acknowledge it after the fact. Ultimately it doesn’t change anything, but you know that these things eventually even out, and it builds faith in the system.

I genuinely don’t recall the AFL or the umpires ever coming out and acknowledging a mistake, even on clear as day ones like this. Makes it impossible to believe them when they tick anything off, because they just don’t want to be questioned. Such a dumb approach.

That's irrelevant unless you're suggesting the umpires deliberately were deliberately biased towards Sydney. I don't believe that.

Sydney keep the win either way. But the AFL should have enough integrity to occasionally admit when the right decision was not just the one that was made.

I'm genuinely pissed at that response. I am scared to think what reaction I might have if Rampe had done that against my team. There absolutely needs to be a punishment here. Even if Sydney are docked the three points from the win. They should not be allowed to keep any reward from that match. Make a ****ing example of the situation.

With every passing week it gets easier to stop watching the non-Eagles games because of tripe like this. I get about a half of other games (combined total) in a weekend now and feel so much better for it. The fiefdom that the AFLHQ has created where they're never wrong and can do as they please without any repercussions is a joke and became too hard for me to stomach when they announced the proposed rule changes and the subsequent "gentleman's agreement" mid last year, and us winning the premiership is the only thing that keeps me clinging on at the moment.

I don’t think the NBA system has it right either, you then get teams doing shit like the Rockets and breaking down the entire game saying they should have won the finals last year

I could just imagine the Purples doing something like this

I get your point, but that’s seemingly an isolated case and it only cropped up a week ago. The NBA have been doing the L2M for years now. If a team wants to out themselves in the media as the world’s biggest flogs, let them.

It’s a lot easier to swallow a bad decision when the league acknowledges it was a bad decision. The AFL having never made a mistake before is an absolute farce and it burns fans out. Our umpires aren’t even full time professionals and they’re not making any mistakes if it is all to be believed, it’s a charade.
