^^^Yes, we seem to have a penchant for Vic Country players, or even country folk
‘15; Weiters, McKay, Charlie + Kennedy
‘16; Setterfield, Willo + Macreadie, SPS, Fisher
‘17; Dow, LOB, TDK, Schumacher
‘18; Walsh, Finbar + Goddard from previous

This is my first post.
I have it on good authority that the Board asked SOS to explain why two Geelong Grammar boys (Dow and O’Brien) were picked at 3 and 10 in the 2017 draft. SOS said that they are really country boys (not capital G Grammar boys) and any suggestion of Grammar boy softness was wrong.

I’m also told that he explained the failure to recruit Ed Richards (who went at 15 or 16 to the Dogs) on the ground that he turned up 45 mins late to his interview. So what! He was 17 or just 18 and had a good reason for being late.

We now know that Richards is a better player and prospect than O’Brien.

Is SOS a bit middle class in his thinking?

We need more mongrels. In picking Stocker I think SOS might have started to learn his lesson.
Stocker has a touch of arrogance and some Mongrel.

Pity we can’t reverse the O’Brien selection.
Is that you Percy, of Bazza McKenzie fame ?

Well I'm sold. I hope the Board take over all drafting/list management from 2020 onwards, with country-born non-private school small forwards the primary focus.
Richards was a private schoolboy. He went to Carey Grammar.
The shorthand expression “Grammar” means either Melbourne Grammar or Geelong Grammar. They are the Establishment grammar schools. The other grammar schools don’t count. They are usually nowhere near as precious or prissy as “Grammar”.
Hope that clears that up. Lol.

O'Brien turned up an hour early for his interview on the back of having to wash his uncles car before being made run to PP.

SOS chose to characterise them as country boys. They both come from the Albury Riverina area from memory.
Might need to do some more homework or get some assistance from the authorative source. Other side of the state... Mildura and Swan Hill

So essentially what you're saying is "Not all grammar schoolboys is spuds"?

You still haven’t got the point. I’m saying “Grammar” (which means ONLY Melbourne and Geelong Grammar) boys are typically soft.
Other grammar schools, like Carey and Caulfield, do not qualify as “Grammar”.
Over and out!

Ok. It’s good to hear that you support SOS but you can still be critical and SOS has an obligation to exercise good judgment.
The evidence, and my instinct, tells me that he got it wrong with LOB. My understanding is that the Board suspects that as well.
I think that Richards is obviously a better player than LOB. If I’m right Richards future prospects are better than LOBs.
Just wondering ... did the GWS, Adelaide, West Coast, Sydney and Brisbane recruiters all get called into this meeting to also give account why they didn’t pick up Ed Richards after pick 10 but earlier than 16?

What about Knightmare and a host of other mock draft “experts”, who mostly had Richards sitting in the high teens/low twenties. Did they get called in to give account of themselves too?!

For what it’s worth, I think O’Brien will be a wonderful player for us.

Saints had 2 picks before our Pick 10 and did not choose Richards either. Clark and Coffield. Fair to say we were not the only club that did not rate Richards highly enough.

I think the important thing to note here is that poster considered a preference for ‘Grammar’ boys to be a ‘bit too middle class’...

So many questions?
If that’s middle class, is there some new upper class I’m not aware of? Kids so rich they look down on the uncouth middle who even bother to go to the most elite and expensive schools? Was the OP implying we need more of these Ubermensch in our team? And if that’s the middle, what does that make the rest of us?

I'm feeling that you don't like grammar schools much. Or you went to one, but it wasn't a "Grammar"

They still used chalkboards instead of paper when my Grammar went to school, she is a bit older though
