Just get them umpiring by the written rules instead of interpretations, and umpiring (as well as the game) will improve markedly.
Or just go through the whole thing with a big black permanent texta and every time the word “intent” appears, put a big black line through it. Ping the player/s for what they DID do, and not for what the umpires GUESSED they may or may not were going to do

The last quarter of Gold Coast v Melbourne featured some genuinely mind boggling umpiring (including Tom McDonald shoving his opponent with both hands in the middle of the back before marking).

So many holding the ball/incorrect disposal non-decisions.

The advantage rule has also changed without actually being officially changed, with umpires now once again deciding if the player was in a favourable position to play on.

The whole thing is an absolute shambles.

No it isn’t.

All of the Dogs, Essendon and Blues beat Collingwood.

lol @ claiming we got the rub of the green against the umpires favourite team where we lost the free kick count as every club for the last 3 years does against the Dogs...

Essendon and Carlton beat Collingwood if they weren't so s**t, the sealer today from a Carlton player picking out a Collingwood player in our F50, from a shocking skill error. Essendon couldn't have picked out Scott Pendlebury better on ANZAC Day, even when he was on the wing on his own, yet they blame the umpires, they didn't make you turn it over. You could have had another 20 free kicks and done nothing with them!

Essendon and Carlton beat Collingwood if they weren't so ****, the sealer today from a Carlton player picking out a Collingwood player in our F50, from a shocking skill error. Nah mate. Haven't you heard? Essendon giving the ball back to us on a silver platter right throughout the final quarter was the umpires fault and had they recieved a couple of free kicks late they would have mirracously started hitting targets. As was the entire Carlton team coming to a complete stop when the game was up for grabs. As was WB getting completely overrun towards the end of the game, etc etc... :thumbsu:

I was having a think about the idiots who thrash umpires every single weekend and not the absurd rules they are expected to follow
Take tackling as an example and just comprehend what a neutral umpires has to adjudicate

So a player lays a tackle

Is it in the back?
Was it too aggressive?
Were they holding them too early?
Did they hold them too late?
Did they have prior?
If they had prior did they make an attempt
If they didnt have prior they dont need to make an attempt
Was it a throw?
Its ok to throw if they didnt have prior
But its not ok to miss an attempted handball
A bounce is against the rules
But you can drop it cold

That all happens in like 2 seconds, then another tackle is laid.

What the actual **** do people expect to happen. In any tackle half of those problem happen, the umpires has to choose to enforce on of those at some point in the chain. No matter what they are ignoring other free kicks. Its an insanely stupidly hard task they have atm

Worst thing is that most of these have been introduced within the last 15 years, slowly at first at then increasingly over time.

How many should actually matter?

State of umpiring is diabolical.

Collingwood, Bulldogs, North, Geelong and to a lesser extend, West Coast benefit from it. Won't hear them complaining too much. The rest of us will complain about BS umpiring because 2019 has gone to another level of bad.

Have to agree. Carlton only got 3 free kicks for the match not including the on the full frees or the double 50. Don't think it influenced the result however questions need to be asked about the state of umpiring this year. I watched the Essendon Sydney match and Bombers were very stiff. All the 50 50 decisions went to Sydney and that climbing the post explanation by Dill was a disgrace.

Did you watch adammania's video JayJ? Bombers are bog ordinary and, when it comes to looking at the comp thru an objective lens, so are their supporters.
Oh pleaasee. Watch the highlights on the AFL website. Let's be honest here. Collingwood get the run of the umps most weeks. +37 free kicks in 8 rounds. That's more than double the 3rd placed team.

I know Essendon are ordinary. No one is denying that. Both Essendon and the umpiring can be s**t at the same time. It's not mutually exclusive.

it seems clear that some teams get more calls than others. Watching the Geelong-North game at the moment and the first quarter was really something. It seems like a team that needs no help is getting plenty for some reason. And now Ablett hits another guy in the head...

Collingwood supprters starting to sound a lot like West Coast fans when their home advantage with umpires was exposed. “Nothing to see here, move along”.

Super Tottenham....from the Lane.
The Rampe goalpost non-decision was disgusting. The rule is not even open to interpretation. It is a stone cold free. The bloody umpire warned Rampe twice hence the umpire knew it was a free...yet didn't pay it.

And the AFL signed off on the decision.

Disgraceful.

I watched the game last night and I actually thought she was very good

She was very good for West Coast, gifted them a couple of goals with dodgy decisions and would have gifted them another if Kennedy didn't miss his shot.

To be fair she hasn't been too bad in other games I've watched her umpire but Saturday night she had a shocker, especially in the first half.

The free kick discrepancy 24/8 to Pies doesn't really concern me. Swings n roundabouts.
What does concern me were the 2 obvious missed free kicks to Plowman, which cost 2 goals directly in the last few minutes.
You can 100% gaurantee that if it was a fwd on the receiving end, those would've been paid.
And yes Pies fans, your bloke who had his legs taken out, probably should've got a free as well, although it wasn't as clear cut imo as the Plowman non decisions.
