I'll repost this from another thread. It's pretty complicated, and the AFL still changing rules on the run.

The rules governing the mid season draft are on the AFL website. It looks like we can place Doc as an 'inactive injured player', and still come back toward the end of the year if another player is placed on the list in the back end of the season.

From what I gather from this, we could get 2 picks in the mid season draft given Pickett has been ruled out for the year, according to the injury list on our website.

A small defender like Jarvis Pina would interest me. Do not know a whole lot about him other than youtube videos I searched and seems quick left foot small defender from WA. I am sure our WA boys such as Crippa, Fisher and Samo would make him feel at ease as soon as possible at the club. We crying out for small defenders so would not be the worst pick at this point of our list build. A small goal kicking forward or quick small genuine defender. Either one is what I would like to see us pick.

I'm hoping we go for the best small forward prospect and the best ruck currently available. Don't care about age of the ruck, but if Kruzer goes down again I seriously can't cop anymore Lobbe or Phillips games.

Assuming we get two players with Pickett and Doc out.

I heard last night we may have nominated Dunkley and Hibberd for medicals. Andy Collins from Willy said we had interest in Hibberd previously also. The Hirst lad has a bit of Simmo (and Skinny Lappin) about him and would not be the worst selection. Deluca has a familiar name - that racial slur is a little warning though - but his numbers are good and he has been on an AFL list. I like Hibberd personally but we’ve had success with Hirst types before - Fisher is/was a bit that way too. If he has AFL skill, why not.

Barass has a strike rate that Glenn Maxwell would be proud of. Maher is probably more in the Travis Dean territory.
I'm not saying he's bad and Maher is amazing. I'm just saying I'm not taking everything he says as gospel and a reason to end discussion because he posts something.

Ben Kelly sounds promising: KPD who's had to play forward/ruck for the Bushrangers the last couple of seasons.
That's the one thing our list requires is a quick 200cm plus key defender that can play on the opposition giant forwards Jones 198cm Weitering 196cm MaCreadie 197cm our only true key position sizes, with the latter unfortunately still struggling body with injury.if this kid was rated by SOS to go reasonably early in this years draft making it an early free hit on a kid with a stack of potential I'd understand the why even more so if they see him turning into a top line ruckman. My stance on on specialist forwards hasn't changed just looking at it from another angle👍

Goddard(198) and Ben Silvagni 196 and likely still growing say hi. Along with half a dozen 190cm plus guys who can defend, led by Marchbank who was recruited as a mobile, athletic KPD. (Plowman, JSOS, McGovern, Schumacher, Williamson). While there is some attraction for a genuine big guy with pace, we are already fully, if not over invested in this area.

Goddard may come good as well. his performances for the NB's have been promising and I would go as far as suggesting he may have been included in the senior team if M.Cox was playing today (along with B.Reid)

Understand where your coming from with young Ben and imo Goddard has question marks on him ATM Marchbank and the others you had listed just aren't big enough to play on the giant forwards of the competition.

The Cottrell pick looks stupider every day...

Do you know anything about Deluca? How did he go at the dockers?
His numbers are higher than anyone else there and at 80kgs he isn't small for a guy that size, having played AFL before you would hope he would relish a second chance. Specifically, does he have any forward craft?
Kicking mechanics are a little suspect, as his first step, but a solid player. Probably should have looked at him in the same context as Gibbons.

I can't see us going that way; Hibberd or a kid.

Cody Hirst, small defender makes absolute sense to me on paper. Averaging 5 tackles so must have a bit of toe, real quick would be a dream but I have zero idea on him. Averaging 22 possies so knows how to find it

Unfortunately no small forwards worth it, will be disappointed if we take a tall unless they’re ruck worthy.

Just don’t think the mids available are good enough, would have been awesome to have talent like Ryan or Kelly to have a crack at :sigh:
Hirst is probably more of a midfielder at the moment, but he's also probably still under 70 kgs (listed at 65kg in the 2018 pre-season).

Very smooth mover though:

We wouldn't be using him as a small defender at AFL level any time soon.

So Pickett needs to be listed as a permanent injury to sit out the year to get us an extra pick, #1/2 & then around #14 (with other clubs still likely to enter the fray).

Will we nab another country player?
Pickett's already listed. It's Docherty who isn't, but as Bamboo Harvester has pointed out, we can still take another player while Docherty is an LTI, and then chance our arm that we get another LTI between now and his resumption in the VFL.

We seem to have plenty of KPD's coming through, but it he was recruited as a ruckman where he's played before...height and speed...definitely worth a thought.
God knows we need one of those
He was a forward/ruck the last two seasons, but he was originally a KPD, and he's been excelling there, including in running the footy out of the D50. I'd be looking at him as a long-term replacement for Jones, and that would obviously involve ditching Goddard. If he's a reasonable ruck, that's a bonus, but only in the sense of being able to ditch Phillips and Lobbe in one go.

Ben will move back into the forward group IMO, along with Kerr being delisted.

Take the best player(s), short, tall or indifferent. I want us to look at it as another chance for a struggling club to help build its list. It's doubtful you are going to get a great fit for our needs in the short term. Get the best players in, shuffle others around and trade out the excess when you get the chance. If some of our draftees fail, you can bet that at least part of that was from us overrating them due to trying to find players perfect for our needs.
I agree.
If you're drafting for fit in this draft you will probably pick someone who is simply not talented enough. Best available player for mine.

I though we have given Sam Fisher NB, the nod that he’d be our selection in the MSD?
Why?
The Cottrell pick looks stupider every day..
It was very odd even at the time.

We are really awful identifying talent with late picks. Finbar is the worst player we've selected in the national draft since Anthony Raso. Playing as a mid Cottrell barely got more than 15 possessions a game in the u18s let alone at a higher level. Kerr isnt going to make it. Macreadie is looking unlikely. Labois is finished. Bugg was a waste of time. The less said about O'Shea and the Shaw the better. Gallucci and JGM were a waste of time.

You're never going to have a huge hit rate with low picks but that's a lot of failed picks in just a few years.

So we've hit mid-May and the hindsight recruiters start sticking the boots into 18 year olds who haven't been at the club for 6 months or so.

Stay classy.
Like yourself? Weak post from a mod. Attacking posters and shitting down discussion. Why are you even here if that's the case? There's a difference between personally abusing players and discussing their ability to play the game. People really need to learn the difference.

Regardless I usually give kids 2-3 years before I say anything negative. But there are some cases where it's just too bleeding obvious that something is amiss. Suggesting otherwise would be a waste of time.

I haven't shut down discussion.

I've simply called you out for s**t-posting about an 18 year old who has barely been at the club for 6 months, who you probably haven't seen outside a 3 minute highlights video.

Has absolutely nothing to do with me being a moderator and frankly it's pathetic to raise that as it holds zero relevance to the discussion.

Of course you're shutting down discussion. Like it or not your a mod and you've come into the thread to abuse posters and end a discussion about our recruiting philosophy because you don't want us discussing the job performance of adults.

Highly relevant.

He's an 18 year old pick 66 barely 6 months into his AFL career.

That's not discussing. That's s**t-posting.

Do better. Or don't melt when called out for it. And certainly don't bring me being a mod into it, it's not relevant and a pathetic avenue to go down because you've got nowhere else to go.

Indeed, how many in this draft are likely to end up having decent careers in the AFL? We should be looking for the ones we think will have the most chance. An AFL list is a constantly evolving thing, if you get talent in, at least you have a trading commodity a few years down the track, even if you can't fit everybody into the side at the same time. Would rather that than be constantly disappointed that the player we picked up in the draft/rookie draft isn't good enough to play in the position we picked him to play in.

Is 22 not still a kid?
It is getting a bit long in the tooth for players who have already had their chance or have been overlooked. You have to look at where they are at now combined with the potential level of improvement. What player at 22 or older is calling out to be drafted? Possibly Hibberd and that's it.

Given Cottrell hasn't been sighted, are we stuck with him for the year, or can we chop and pick up someone who might actually play?

He's on the list as is any other rookie.

Very ordinary to suggest we're stuck with him as though he shouldn't be there.
