Soldo has been building for this kind of moment.

I actually think he will provide us a lot better service at the centre bounce than what Nank did, just simply because Nank is a shorter ruckman .

I like what Soldo does around the ground too. Not as good as Nank in that area, but serviceable.

Biggest concern is his mobility in getting back to defend when oppo ruckman drift forward.

Soldo will get the nod and CCJ will start his true ruck apprentice work as no.1 in VFL..

I'm also very concerned with Soldo around the ground, I don't think ive ever seen him take contested marks.. Big boy has been going forward and causing havoc, Soldo really needs to improve his marking and movement but he deserves first crack.
I've seen him take about 50 contested Mark's

I'd give Chol a crack. What is he on our list if he isn't a ruckman. 200cm with a big leap, pace and great skills. What is there to lose.... we have our senior ruckman as backup... Balta.
4 points is what we have to lose

Soldo

I think we will benefit greatly from his ruck work but loose out massively when the ball hits the ground.
Nank was an additional midfielder but not great in the ruck.

We need a ruckman ... not another midfielder.
Soldo definitely deserves first crack ... I’m confident that he will compete hard.

You’d think Soldo would win more hit outs than Nank, hopefully they go to advantage, and result in more centre clearances, but it’s not always the way.
I don’t reckon Soldo will be able to play the same game time as Nank he has no where near the same tank, so Balta will probably be spending extra minutes in the midfield

Yes my post wasn't meant to all that serious, but if you are a gambling man it is not that bad a punt.

Balta lead our contested possessions and clearances last week. Unlike Grigg when he rucks and loses the tap-out, Balta has 100kg's of midfield muscle, aggression and speed at ground level, so is effectively a midfield bull. Grigg wasn't able to do that, even though statistically we didn't do too badly in clearances when he played there. Grundy is so good because he does both.
To me Chol could be a bit the same. He is an untapped/unknown quantity in the ruck because he is rarely rucked for long in the VFL. Soldo does the bulk and CCJ the rest. Last season Chol played JLT ruck and was really aggressive and influential at ground level. Since then he's hardly been seen in the ruck.

Given how well our young blokes have done this season, the gambler says why not. Logically, obviously Soldo is the best choice.
Soldo will most likely win the ruck against the Hawks pair, but McEvoy is pretty mobile and the best contested ruck mark in the league, and will run Soldo very deep. Is Soldo mobile enough. (Are Chol and Balta smart enough, I doubt it.)

Good discussion here - I raised it as a matter of interest as I agree, Soldo is the obvious choice and to be honest I am sure he will be named.

I really like the look of CCJ though and I reckon in a couple of years we will be singing his praises - part of me would love to roll the dice now and you never know, he might just grasp the opportunity with both hands. (As might young Ivan)

I think Soldo is ready compared to CCJ
However, I look at the dogs and young English, he is maturing at a rapid rate in the ones

Soldo is the one that should get the nod. CCJ is a player in the making but not ready for senior big minutes yet will be more forward and stints in the ruck whereas we need Soldo to shoulder a fair burden of the ruck and he is next best. That being said Balta looked great having the responsibility. His buttering up was unreal and he clears a path and tackles hard and quick. Balta reminds me of a skilled Stefan Martin. Good times ahead !

I reckon Soldo will get first crack but i wouldnt be dissapointed to see CCJ get a bit of a crack at it. The Pies were forced to play Grundy early days and reckon the development in the top grade fast tracked him. I dont see why we couldnt afford the same chance to CCJ. Especially with Balta giving them a chop out and when not in the ruck hes going to offer more as a forward target than Soldo can.

Soldo makes more sense right now. I like that CCJ will take the VFL ruck. Ivan might not be capable of filling Nank's shoes. But I reckon he's likely to do a decent job.

Depending on the match up--- I'd personally like to see Noah Balta play first ruck in a couple of games with Broad & Lynch playing back up ruck.

I know that Balta can't run all day, but it would make our midfield stronger and we could try something different.

For those of the VFL watchers out there what has been the breakdown of Soldo v CCJ in the ruck? Soldo taking 60-70% of gametime in the middle?

Ivan has both of these in spades, chol at the moment doesn't ,,

OK - so one of these guys is going to get a fair crack at it for the next 8 weeks or so.... who would you prefer?
Soldo is a big workhorse and a competitive tap ruckman but for me, with the success we have had under adversity this year blooding youngsters, CCJ has by far the bigger up-side.

I would be promoting the big hyphen this weekend.

Neither initially , I am sticking with the Balta, Broad, (Garthwaite in the backline covering for Broad combo or until Vlastuin comes back).

Could prove very successful and if a new bumps come along and they need a break in comes Soldo or CCJ.

I would probably lean towards CCJ in terms of rotations as he would compliment Balta, Broad and the forward set-up more

Not as silly as it sounds , nank has tapered some which makes me more confident we can cover for him with the added bonus of finding that sec ruck that will be an essential finals ingredient , CCJ stats are pretty impressive vfl this year , 200cm 97kg , I reckon he might be ready

Personally if I was Nankervis I would be slightly worried. He is undersized and is regularly beaten in the ruck. He is supposedly good as an additional midfielder, but let's be honest, at best he is just ok there. The question is does this competency offset his weakness in rucking contests and our lack of first use of the ball as a consequence? To me he is like a batsman who is just reasonable with the bat but keeps his place in the side because he can also a part time wicket keeper. Someone like that doesn't want to get injured and be replaced with a specialist wicket keeper. That can really expose him and highlight dimensions that the team has really been lacking. It can be very hard to get back in when that happens. That's the irony of the injuries of Nankervis and Ross happening at the same time, the damage caused by the loss of a contested beast like Ross might in some way be offset by the replacement of Nankervis with a ruckman that can at least break even.

Anyhow it's impossible not to like Nankervis, especially after 2017, but we might be looking at him and his role in the team in a completely different light if Soldo, Coleman-Jones abd/or Chol come off. With so many kids coming through or banging on the door in the reserves list management at the end of the year is going to be brutal. You just don't want to get injured and lose your spot if you are chronically deficient in some aspect of the game.

Yes Soldo is groomed for this, but he is limited and not the future. But he is as ready as you can be.
Chol is not a forward, he is a ruck in waiting, but is not given the responsibility (because Soldo is so good at VFL level, and CCJ is the future).
Chol will be delisted at the end of the year unless something happens. Seems a waste of talent.
