Review GWS Giants vs Hawthorn Horks - Sun 12th May @ the MCG

watching the r8 post match interview on the giants website with cogs, can see Jezza at the end with an ice pack on his shoulder and hobbling. Looks very sore.

Was appalling to watch live. Staggering that a side as good as the Giants on paper was never remotely a sniff the entire second half. Very unusual. You don't see Geelong deliver that. Massive reality check.

A few observations:

- Coniglio's finger I reckon is a real worry. He stayed away from shaking hands with the Hawks at the end and with the only player who came up to him he shook with his left hand. Struggled to lay an effective tackle - at one stage late choosing to bump rather than tackle.

- Pace is a genuine issue through the middle. Watching live it's very obvious how much more nippy the Hawks were around the ball and on the spread. Scully, Shiel losses very noticable on days like this. Look quite one paced through there.

- Not sure I'd want Jezza Cameron taking a critical set shot deep in September. He looks very shaky on anything that remotely requires a right to left shape. He's also chronically injured.

- The players were very frustrated when they came to the bench in the last qtr. They all care - like Leon said it was probably an energy (or lack of) issue

- Toby doesn't look a midfielder to me

- Stats won't show it but Sam Taylor is a gun and gave 110% today. What a pickup.

I don’t like saying it, but I don’t think Leon will be a premiership coach. The players were poor today, but the coaches were even worse... totally out coached.
A team that performs like that against a middle of the road team in the Hawks... at the MCG. Sorry guys, we aren’t going to win a premiership anytime soon.
We can come out next week and thump Carlton or whoever it may be (if we even win), but teams playing us at the G will have so much confidence. We look rudderless when we play there.
Today was really deflating.

So this run game you speak of... is it just whitfield and shaw or whats the go? Obviously missed whitfield, shaw didn't provide much run at all and you just seemed a different side coming out of defense.

Keep the faith General. You knocked off the Cats at Geelong. You've got it.

Hope injuries don't ruin your chance. Would love to see you G.F. day raising the cup while GAjnr. & Dangerflog are crying.

The Grand Final is played at the MCG.

Jimmy Bartel - "You’ve got to give credit to the opposition, it was a masterclass from Alastair Clarkson"

One could infer it was a WHAT class from Leon then? How long has he been coaching one of the best teams on paper?

Commiserations on the loss.

Here are the midfield frequency stats from the game - this is an overall summary of how often your players were lining up as one of the 5 mids (inside + wings) at centre bounces.

Overall Summary - 18

Hopper 16
de Boer 14 (9i, 5w) (FWIW O'Meara attended 17)
Kelly 15 (8w, 7i)
Kennedy 11 wing
Taranto 10
Coniglio 10
Lloyd 8 wing
Tomlinson 2 wing
Himmelberg 2 wing
Greene 2

Rucks:
Simpson 9 (McEvoy 13)
Tomlinson 9 (Ceglar 5)

1st Half - 11

Hopper 10
de Boer 9 (2w)
Kelly 9 (5w, 4i)
Kennedy 9 wing
Taranto 6
Coniglio 6
Lloyd 4 wing
Tomlinson 2 wing

Simpson 5
Tomlinson 6

2nd Half - 7

Hopper 6
Kelly 6 (3i, 3w)
de Boer 5 (3w, 2i)
Taranto 4
Coniglio 4
Lloyd 4 wing
Kennedy 2 wing
Himmelberg 2 wing
Greene 2

Simpson 4
Tomlinson 3

Notes:
- Most starts for a non-ruck this season (all clubs) in analysed games (mostly FTA games into Melbourne) and also the highest percentage of bounces attended for a non-ruck without injury to the ruck specialist in 3 seasons of analysing games. A sizeable difference between the Rds 1 & 2 games which also featured the Simpson/Tomlinson combo - those were a much more common ruck to non-ruck split of 18/5 and 20/6 respectively.
- I'm aware Kennedy was a first choice wing last week before injury, but as that game wasn't analysed, this is Kennedy's first appearance in the midfield mix in an analysed game since Rd 19, 2016, which also marked the only other time Kennedy finished in your top 6 mids in analysed games.
- Most ever starts for Lloyd surpassing his previous PB of 6 against Brisbane in Rd 14, 2017

Coniglio 10

I can't find any other posts of your's for GWS this year, so I'm guessing you haven't analyzed any other games? I was just wondering whether this is low for Cogs, i.e. the injury speculation also dampening his time in the middle. Because his influence definitely was less out of the middle on the weekend.

I have analysed Rds 1 & 2 and have one more GWS game sitting on the IQ to review - I'm mindful I'm on opposition boards and mods often don't like people bumping old game/review threads once Thursday/Friday rolls around. FTA games are relatively quick to review, but GWS is rarely featured and the Foxtel games are much more time intensive as they require manual scanning to find the goals and often involve following the play for a while to catch all players as the framing of the bounce often isn't optimal to clearly see everybody (Foxtel directors love the ultra zoomed out shot). As its not a paid gig like Champion Data, unfortunately these sides are much more when time permits.

Re: Coniglio - Rd 1 he attended 11 of 23 bounces which ranked him 6th, however he wouldn't have ranked in your top 6 mids had Perryman not been injured - Perryman was on the wing for 10 bounces before injury.

Rd 2 he attended 19 of 26 (3rd overall).

Compared to last season, he played in 13 of the 14 analysed games and attended an average of 15.84 bounces per game (or 61.9%) - one of those games was impacted by injury.

Of the 3 games analysed this season, he has attended an average of 13.33 bounces (59.7% of bounces).

Given I only have 3 games of data this season, its too early to get a general sense of the norm for him this season, but there is a potential trend from last season that is potentially continuing and worth bringing up: pre-injury last season he finished in your top 3 most frequently used mids every match (including being the most frequently used twice), however with this season's data added in that now makes it 8 of his last 12 analysed games where he has only ranked as the 6th mid or 7th (once you reach 7 you're effectively a forward/mid for that match).
