Buy low, sell High.
In that case, I’d be putting Short on the trade table. Don’t feel he has a spot in the team when we are fully fit. His lack of defensive accountability means he and Houli are fighting for the same spot. Stack is already ahead of him, as he can also add midfield minutes into the mix.

Houli will be gone at year's end.

I think he's got one more year left in him

Even if he does play next year he will need to be managed

He’s already missed two games this year

One of our 30 year old players has pulled the pin. Sheds & Houli are going fine. Not so good JR. But I expect Houli to go until 2020. JR & Sheds beyond that

I don’t think it’s something you can necessarily bank on
Grigg was extremely consistent last year playing 22 games
Now he’s been forced into retirement due to one injury that just continued to get worse

The Club will know all about 'player management' after this year's horror injury run...they'll manage Houli fine if he wants to go around again next year...

I would prefer that players did not play every game of a H&A season. We blew 2018 with that narrow view. By finals I would much rather a list of 30 plus players that have had meaningful game time at the top level. Look, who knows what will happen with Houli. I have no guarantee. But I'd have him go around next year and if he has Grigg-like bad luck then he could retire mid year.

With grigg retiring , houli a possibility and a real chance of Ellis leaving as a FA , this would be one of the more stupid ideas

A lot of our guys are role players, guys perfect for their particular task, specialists. Many of them would not fit in well into other teams so are difficult to attribute a value to. The 2017 team was not hugely different to the 2016 team, Dimma and his pit crew just got the tuning perfect.

Team results often inflate the value of players but team success often encourages players to stay for unders. We have some really good kids who due to club injuries are getting regular games and are undoubtably raising eyebrows elsewhere in the competition. Don't be in too much of a hurry to bounce 22 year olds like Dan Butler, his best is ahead of him.

Would it?
Salary cap relief to spread amongst our juniors. And/or the possibility of targeting another quality free agent/trade target with the compensation we will get for Ellis and short.
The above spots have been taken already or have quality replacements waiting in the wings.

Houli - Naish

Grigg - Balta

When we are at full strength, we also have to fit in Ross, Baker, Stack, Bolton, RCD, into this team. I just don’t see there being a spot for Short.

I’d rather lose short and bank the cash to distribute amongst our juniors or target a player to fill a weak point in our side

However I do only propose that we would lose 1 of short or Ellis, and I believe Short is more expendable.
Give me your ‘stupid’ idea then mate.

Some good points raised here...
Would our role players command a premium in trade to other sides...?!?
And the bearing our salary cap has on our role player retention...:thumbsu:

Short is totally expendable. We're a better side without him, he's purely a backup now, and other clubs might value him - perfect business to trade him. We have Stack, Menadue, Naish, Markov and Eggs, on top of Houli and Shedda, to play running back.

Retired: Grigga
Trade: Short, Moore (think he'll leave for greater opportunity)
Delist: Weller, Townsend, Aarts.

I'd keep Brando, unless the free agency $ tempt him away, then I'd say, go with God, son.

What types of player or who would you target in the offseason? Or is it purely picks you'd want for a guy like Short?

Balta is extremely playing well ATM. But its a long season for young players. So with Naish for Houli. Naish looks amazing in the VFL but hasn't got on the field yet. Lets see how this season pans out for him and Houli. I wouldn't be pushing Houli out just yet. He is on 1 year contracts for not big money I'm sure.
Maybe someone like Markov?

Obviously depends who's available. If we get a pick under 40 we've done well and can draft a blue collar mid, a key back, or a ruck.

Forget having spare cash for FA you’re underestimating the quality we have coming through that are on base wages , with Houli grigg Ellis all possibly exiting we should have enough to reward emerging talent , no more though

Yes of course.
I wasn’t insinuating pushing Houli out, I’d like to see him played next year also.
I was just saying that there is replacements coming through. More so that I don’t believe Short has a spot next year.

That may be so. Still doesn’t change the fact that I don’t believe Short has a spot in the team
Which is what you initially bristled at, which still didn’t go into any further detail why my suggest was ‘stupid’ as you put it.

In short , coz stack could be better used in the midfield than HB . I dont expect Houli to play on , short is closest we have to the yards he puts in
