This is a tricky one. He probably won't make it in the midfield at Adelaide. Jones and McHenry are already better suited to that role and arguably better players in general. I would have liked to see him play as a small forward but his tackling pressure looks way down this season tbh so I don't see him getting selected there. Could be another player who has his career saved by moving to half back? He's skilled and has the speed. Not sure he's good enough 1v1 though and he isn't a known intercept player either.

Honestly I think he'll be a good player but I have a bad feeling it's just not going to happen at Adelaide and we won't find out his real quality until he gets picked up by another club as a trade or dfa.
Someone posted somewhere that he seems the type of player we trade to Hawthorn who then goes on to be a star. I think that's a bit harsh. We're not too bad at developing players. But we do perhaps take our time.

The reality is a first round draft pick should be best 22 by the end of his 3rd year.

He was best 22 last year and played every game from round 15 onward.

Seems to have regressed this year. Is that from an injury interrupted pre-season, a new role, or just form?

His draft year top 30. Fair to say a few have gone passed him. I actually like him. He has something different and he is fast. Just seems not quite sure about his role yet.

Jarrod Berry, Will Hayward, SPP, Alex Witherden, Zac Fisher and Brandan Parfitt have certainly overtaken him and by a fair margin too when it comes to the impact they are having.

That was me that said that. My belief is that we aren't good at developing wingers/outside mids, not that our development is bad in general. The comment about Hawthorn was mostly because they have a history for trading in guys who have one decent attribute (usually kicking) and developing the rest of their game.

This is a bit of a strange thing to say, but some players develop better playing in a poorer side, and I tend to suspect Galluci is one of those.

He's by his nature a bit rough around the edges and the role he's asked to play seems to have him paranoid about making a mistake.

Almost needs the freedom to go out and * up, to learn from his * ups, and then to improve.

Yeah look I haven't been a big wrap for Jordan personally but I do like his athletic attributes. The role I imagine him being best suited, and absolutely ideal for, is as The loose man off the back of the square, floating forward. However, this role is obviously non-existent now as a whole.

He looked very handy in multiple games coming off the back of the square last year.

We may potentially need to fabricate a roll for him? Something like a starting half forward who works right up ground to the contest and tries to sit on the defensive side of stoppages with the aim to burst through and collect the loose ball or receive on the outside; alternatively using his pace to pressure the opposition if they win the ball.

I just don't see any traditional position that he excels in unfortunately.

Coming up for his 4th game in 2019 if selected this week.

I best not say too much lest I be accused of being hater or having ruled a line through Jordan already.

What I will say is I want and expect to be seeing more from a 1st round draft pick now well into his 3rd season on the list.
That’s a fair expectation.

Having said that I was pretty dark on Milera coming into season #3, and from memory he didn’t really come out of his shell until week 6 against the Suns. And looking at his stats he only really started getting more then 20 disposals consistently around week 16. And now he’s probably one of the most exciting guys on the list for me.

I guess my point is just there is still plenty of the season to play out for Gooch to find form and fitness. I’m hopeful he gets there, but if he’s still struggling to find his role after the year, then I will probably join you

It's going to be hard for him to hold his spot in the team this year, especially with Gibbs, Seedsman and Milera to come back in.
And Jones and McHenry snapping at his heals.
I think he needs to go back to sanfl, regain some form and try and finish the season off really well.
Have a big pre-season next year and see if he can make a spot his own.

Is he not producing enough output because he's simply not up to it, or is it because he is playing a position/role where a low output is standard?

The times I've seen him play his best football is when he's been given a decent amount of responsibility either in the midfield or on the wing. We rarely seem to give him that at AFL level.

I want to see him there before I write him off. I don't think many players look good playing a half forward/forward pocket/defensive forward role for us

My gut feeling is the bolded, it's not a role we have much success in player wise, and those who do are really specialised for it. For the rest it they're just a body to get games in.

It may however be time to put Gallucci in the SANFL and get some midfield time in him. I'd want to see him as an in/out mid before long where that acceleration/strength and good short kick (usually) could be a real weapon (on top of him having more of a chance to be involved late in game, as he had a knack of doing the right things there). Very similar vibe to 2017 Milera at the moment where it is a case of get him the hell away from the wasteland that is half forward.

I really liked what he brought to the team last year, so I don't think ability is the issue, just form. And when a player is struggling for form, I think you do both the player and the team a disservice by continuing to play him. Drop him back to the SANFL and let him find some form and confidence away from the spotlight. Meanwhile there are several other players who do warrant selection and deserve an opportunity.

Only due to injuries.

He played two blocks of matches and was only dropped once. He played a group of six matches, was dropped for Murphy after we were smashed by Melbourne, then returned to play 10 consecutive matches from Round 13 onward.

He originally was brought in to replace Mackay but held his spot through a whole bunch of injuries and returns. Doesn't say to me he was mere injury cover.

The David Mackay role, but better. Failing that, the Richard Douglas role minus the fumbles

Agree with this, his style (but not necessarily quality) reminds me more of Mackay than Douglas, the difference is Gallucci looks stronger and I think he has better spatial awareness than Mackay, so will be a better player inside the contest.
Moving him there wouldn't really solve the problem in the short term though, as Milera and Seedsman will be back soon.

I actually think Gooch often looks like Brodie Smith with ball in hand. Has the slightly hunched over running style and kick, plays with burst and likes to break the lines, and seems to be a deep kick first kind of guy.

I'm not saying he's going to be a HBF anytime soon, but he certainly mirrors some of the traits that makes Brodie so dangerous!

What position do people see him as long term?

Midfielder.

Those traits suit an in/out type in particular, someone who could make a career out of being the person who is receiving the first handball from a Matt Crouch type and using his speed to punch holes in an opposing set up.

In saying that, Gooch may not have the luxury of being a full time midfielder with Jones/McHenry/Milera all really suiting that role to a tee. So may have to either hope he clicks as a half forward or finds another position (maybe half back).
