For the second time in three weeks two teams with the same total of points have had their percentages rounded off to the same number. After round 7 Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn were both on 12 points with percentages of 100.2, whilst after round 9 Brisbane Lions and Richmond are both on 24 points with percentages of 103.5.

Brad Scott now retires (for the time being) as the coach with the third-highest tally of games without a draw, having coached 211 games consisting of 106 wins and 105 losses, placing him behind Malcolm Blight (250 games, 139 wins, 111 losses) and Ted Whitten (228 games, 91 wins, 137 losses).

The ending of the 2018 SANFL season was highly controversial, with the North Adelaide Roosters winning a close Preliminary Final over the Eagles after having 19 players on the field at one stage during the match. The Eagles protested the PF result but it was to no avail, and North were allowed to play Norwood in the Grand Final, where the Roosters upset the hot favorite premiership favorites the Redlegs to win their first premiership since 1991. Ironically the 1991 Grand Final was also marred by controversy, North's 75-point win over West Adelaide notable for the many fights that broke out during the game.

The SANFL punished North Adelaide for the 19 player debacle by deducting 4 premiership points from the Roosters starting total in 2019. This equates to two wins as the SANFL awards 2 premiership points for a win, rather than 4 seen in the other leagues around Australia. As at the time of posting the Red and Whites are having a hard time defending their premiership and the Roosters are languishing at the bottom of the ladder with just one win, and negative two premiership points for the season, threatening to emulate West Adelaide's fall from premiers to last in 2015-2016, and NEAFL team UWS Giants which went from premiers to wooden spooners in 2016-2017.

If North Adelaide fail to win another match for the season, we might well see the first instance of a team having a negative premiership point total for the season. From an interesting trivia/statistic perspective, I hope so.

It was in 1981 when St.Kilda were penalised 8 premiership points (2 wins) when Doug Cox was apparently playing when incorrectly registered or something like that. It reduced the side to just one win after a bright start (by then St.Kilda standards) earlier that season. However on appeal the penalty was rescinded and they finished with 5 wins and 17 losses that year.

Reversing a match result because of a 19th player is harsh and ridiculous. A 2-game penalty because of a 19th player is harsh and ridiculous.

How hard it is for a league official to keep count of how many players each team has on the bench?

Geelong's 11th last win was 13 games ago (P13 W11 L2) - phenomenal
Brisbane's 11th last win was 20 games ago (P20 W11 L9) - improving
Carlton's 11th last win was 66 games ago (P66 W11 L55) - stagnant

or

Geelong's last 11 games (W10 L1)
Brisbane's last 19 games (W10 L9)
Carlton's last 65 games (W10 L55)

Carlton are flying high with a new coach and a winning streak. They have 10 games left to play this year.

But will recent history repeat itself?

Carlton's last 10 games in 2015: 1 win, 9 losses
Carlton's last 10 games in 2016: 1 win, 9 losses
Carlton's last 10 games in 2017: 1 win, 9 losses
Carlton's last 10 games in 2018: 1 win, 9 losses

We are over halfway through the season and to date there has just been one game where both teams have scored over 100 points - Essendon's 20.10-130 to 18.4-112 victory over Melbourne in Round 3.

Good article on the AFL site today about players at the highest number of venues: https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-06-15/which-current-player-has-played-at-the-most-venues-in-history

Jack Hombsch (GW, PA, GC) today played his 110th game at his 21st distinct venue (Riverway Stadium), extending his own record over that of 19 venues, jointly held by Paul Salmon (ES, HW, 324 games) and Robert Harvey (SK, 383 games).

I dug into Hombsch's records a bit (using afltables.com), and found that he played his first 10 games at 10 different venues (remarkable, compared to Alan Didak (CO), 218 games at only 6 venues in total). Hombsch equalled the record of 19 venues in just his 90th game (when he played for PA vs HW at York Park in R11, 2018), and set the outright record with his 20th venue in his 95th game (when he played for PA vs WB at Eureka Stadium in R19, 2018). I derived his full progressive list; see below.

Plus I can think of one "current" venue he hasn't yet played at (Cairns; there might be more, but they don't spring to mind). As a GC player, he's a good chance to add it to his list before he's done.

And we had our second on Saturday night. Ironically Carlton who managed to cracked the ton for just the second time in four years still managed to be on the losing end.

In 1956, North Melbourne started the season with a thrashing of St. Kilda and headed the ladder after Round 1. The Kangaroos might well have celebrated by rocking around the clock and thinking that they might go one better than six years earlier, but it wasn't to last. North Melbourne won just two more games for the season and finished last. To date the 1956 Kangaroos are the only AFL/VFL wooden spoon side to have headed the ladder at one stage of the season. It has happened in the WAFL (South Fremantle 1987) and SANFL (Sturt 1994) - and there may be VFA/VFL cases that I'm not aware of, but this dubious achievement by North is unique.

The 1957 season was a particularly even one especially at the tail end of the ladder, where five teams spent time in last place. Entering Round 18, the last of the season, Geelong hadn't been on the bottom once all year but lose their last game of the season against their feline cousins Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval and the Lions would climb out of 12th position and hand the Cats the 1957 wooden spoon. A highly inaccurate Geelong never looked like winning against Fitzroy, so the Cats found themselves on the bottom of the ladder for the first and only time in 1957 and taking the wooden spoon back to Kardinia Park. If ever there was a time to play the 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' theme, then would have been it.

I don't know of any other cases of AFL/VFL wooden spoon teams like Geelong in 1957 that only hit the bottom of the ladder in the last round - if you know of any please advise.

Carlton's 11.13-79 to 11.9-75 victory over the Fremantle Dockers yesterday was the third time this season that this scoreline has come up.

The Dockers themselves beat Collingwood 11.13-79 to 11.9-75 in Round 11, while GWS defeated Geelong 11.13-79 to 11.9-75 in Round 4.

Good post.

Camberwell (VFA) won its first four games of 1988 to head the ladder; two games clear of its nearest rival. The Cobras then lost 12 out of 14 remaining matches and finished a game and a half clear on the bottom of the ladder.

Similar theme - not quite finishing bottom

1999 - Geelong won the opening 5 games of the season - to sit equal top ( behind W/Coast on %) then promptly lost the next 9 games in a row to sit 3rd bottom
