Smith averages 50 at 3 and only 30 at 4. Smarsh can bat where ever. Finch lucky he is captain otherwise I’d be opening with Warner and Ussie. Finch bashing a 3rd string pakistani lineup hasnt convinced me there isn’t still a bullseye on his front pad for good bowlers to target.

Pretty sure Smarsh has made most of his 100’s in the last year at 4

Yeah I'd feel comfortable with Marsh at 4. Can consolidate if we lose early wickets, or play his shots and tick the scoreboard over while whoever he's partnered with goes big.
He's done alright further down the order too, but that was a while back. I remember him and Mike Hussey going gangbusters in a power play once in England. Right out of the blue as they were just pootling along.

I'm still gobsmacked that they prefer having K Richo over him. Does squad balance mean nothing?
They are taking 2 really fragile quicks with them in the Dorf and Coulter-Nile so I kind of get the thinking.

Wish we had a top shelf keeper bat or even a Haddin level keeper bat.
Would drop Stoinis and play 5 bowlers with Cummins and NCN at 7 and 8. Just go the complete opposite to all the other teams and try and pinch it based on a strong bowling attack rather than a strong batting line up.
If the top order doesn't score runs we are fair screwed anyway.
Alas Carey is not good enough to consider it with our current squad.

Stoinis; I don’t think they are planning on going in with a top 5 of Finch, Khawaja, Warner, Smith andMarsh as Maxwell would have to bowl 10 overs. Reckon this was something of a bat-off between Khawaja, Marsh and maybe Warner.

Well, yeah, but he’s the only all-rounder we took. As for Warner, he was sublime in the IPL, I expect him to come good, but they may opt for Khawaja and Marsh if he doesn’t score soon.

Play another batsman instead... it's a batting competition now.
Warner - eh.. IPL is completely different. Williamson won the Orange Cap last year and followed it up with 1 50 since then in T20. 4 50s in 12 games of ODI. It's not a marker of anything really. Plus waiting for someone to potentially come good in a tournament where 3 losses = out.. is bad.

I very much doubt we go in with four bowlers and expect 10 from Maxwell. If one of them gets towelled up, Finch is literally the only other option. The game could be lost before we go out to bat.

In four of the last five ODI’s, Australia have played five specialist batsmen with Maxwell at no.6. I think they are hoping Maxwell, Smith and maybe even Finch can make up 10 overs.
Not sure I want to see Smith doing much bowling..
you wouldn't use smith if your proper bowlers are already getting smashed. you're more likely to use him after a good first 10 overs and you're willing to risk a couple of bad overs to see if he gets a wicket.

IPL means nothing but a few warm up games are a reason to not pick him? This isn't an untried player we are talking about, he has the talent and was batting extremely well only a month ago. If we want any chance to win it all he will play a significant role for us.
