I think the only way we have currency player wise is to trade out players in positions we have a lot of that type in, such as mids and half back types. Such as Williams dale lynch types but they wouldn’t net us a lot. Agree Roberts isn’t worth anything in trade value.

Our best bet is using this year and next years first rounders and other early draft picks. We have taken a lot of draft picks recently it won’t hurt us to miss the first few rounds of the draft for a year if it nets us the type of player we need. Also think there are a lot of low cost options out there.

Agree on trading mids and half backs. I think regardless of what happens in terms of player acquisitions, we should still look at trading out midfielders this year before their value drops further from being played out of position, and before they become disgruntled. We are playing way too many midfielders in the one side.

One, if not two, of McLean, Lipinski, Dale and Wallis needs to come out of that side.

If we could trade out one or two mids this year in order to help secure a decent key forward, it would go a long way towards fixing our list demographic

Wouldn't put much weight into their valuations of players in that article - zero chance Gold Coast would let Martin go for a 2nd rounder, especially since there'd be multiple clubs chasing his signature, driving up the price

Yeah I'm hoping that if, in the scenario that Martin agrees to come to us, we'd pay something like Pick 22 + Pick 42 this year, or maybe next year's 1st with Gold Coast's 2nd or 3rd coming back with Martin. As good as he can be, he is still a risk just like Schache was (which doesn't look to be paying off anytime soon, but there's still hope)

It seems i'm in the minority that would like Isaac Smith and don't want us to go for Martin. I'm a huge fan of Smith, and think he's still got a decent amount of footy in him.
Martin would be too expensive and just doesn't do enough for me. Sure he's silky and got some traits we lack, but he'd be a high profile target, and even though he hasn't reached that level yet, Gold Coast would rightly ask for a pretty good return on him. We avoided paying too much for him once already back when he was available in the mini draft, please avoid again.

If he was such a risk, why had the Hawks been inquiring re his availability for 3 years before they got him?

That's easy answered.

It was because Clarko could see him going to waste at Whitten Oval and knew he could get the best out of him while also filling a massive hole in our list.

Let's be honest when we traded for him he was clearly a shadow of his former self, while Smith on the other hand is elite in his position.

Three premierships and a Norm Smith clearly proves that Clarko was right in taking the risk though.

Getting Smith would be a huge get for us, sign him to a three year deal plus 2 year coaching role.
It never hurts bringing in experience into the club. Sammy, Suckers and Taylor have been great for us in terms of leadership and roles.

Clarko fine letting older talent leave and Smith can still play. If hes playing a half forward role. He could easily kick 25+ goals in our system.

Thanks for the response but there's no way a deal would get done if that was what is on offer.

He's one of our best players regardless of age and if players like Beams and Gibbs can earn their clubs 2x 1sts then surely Smith would at least be worth one.

Good Luck if can manage to get that from anyone. At 31 there isn't enough left in him to make him worth it.
In hindsight I reckon Crows don't do the deal for Gibbs, and for the same no one is coughing up a 1st for Smith.
The other thing is does Smith even want a change?

I Agree i think we have too many Mids that are very similar. I think an injection of pace, goal sense and a tall defender should be on our targets and trading some of those Mids to make that happen. I think the dogs will turn the corner along the same time as Tim English. I like him and have faith he will turn the corner and as he does i think the bulldogs will aswell. Hopefully thats within the next 2 years!

I like to break up our footy list into these areas:

KEY BACKS -TRENGOVE - CORDY - ROBERTS - LEWIS YOUNG - LACHIE YOUNG ----- Big holes here add Tomlinson to play the Second key defender with either Trengove for the Bulky Forwards and monitor both the Youngs growth with hopes they can come in

SMALL BACKS - DANIEL - DURYEA - RICHARDS (playing forward this season) ------ SOLID in this area I like Richards in defence quick good tackler and bring pace. Daniel can play on the smallest Forward and use his good foot skills and decision making, Duryea also solid in defence good left foot. Happy with section of the list

INTERCEPT DEFENDERS MID SIZE - WOOD - CROZIER - BAILEY WILLIAMS - SUCKLING ------ Strong Area of our list WOOD i think will play much better when he dosnt have to play as a genuine full back, Crozier is in good form and hiting the prime of his career, Bailey Williams coming along nicely and with an aging Suckling still playing well. Happy with this section of our list

WINGS/OUTSIDE MIDS - JOHANISSEN - HUNTER ----- JJ is still so important to us brings good running ability that we desperately need. Hunter kind of positionless lack of pace and limited left foot. Obviously Hunter can play just need a defined role i feel if not i think he has good value coming off a B&F for the club. Would like us to add some pace in this area of our list Possibly a Jack Martin who is a small forward/mid with pace

STAR MIDS - BONTEMPELLI - MACARE ----- BONT AND MACRAE i think the two Mid Stars both have good foot skills can play inside and out, I think its important to maximise Bonts midfield time but can roll forward to kick 15-20 goals a season. Would be nice to add an A Grade player with Pace but dont think that achievable this season so happy with these two for now

INSIDE MIDS - LIBERATORE - DUNKLEY - WALLIS - SMITH ----- Libba is an inside bull. Dunkley a big body midfield bull limited foot skills but has good ariel ability can role forward and kick 15-20 goals a season. Wallis is very similar to Dunkley i feel but with limited foot skills, does role forward and kick some goals but is turnover prone and fell like if hes not playing huge mid minutes we can use him in a trade. Smith showing great signs and looks to have some pace on the outside also. Strong area of our list with some surplus to our needs in Wallis, who we can use to strengthen our list in other areas

RUCKS - ENGLISH ----- I think the teams winning fortune will turn the corner alongside Tim English's progression. I have Faith in him and think he can be a star so i think persist with him - Could do with a depth ruckman as a backup

KEY FORWARDS - NAUGHTON - SCHACHE ----- I think we've seen enough from Naughton to persist with him forward flies for the ball at its highest point and has a real crack. Schache is a worry but still some optimism has to get more involved and lead up at the ball and leave Naughton at home. Adding another Tall to this mix would be nice is we think Schache is not that 2nd man but i still have some faith is him for now maybe draft a mature age forward or look around for another tall.

SMALL FORWARDS - MCLEAN - CAVARRA ----- i think Mcleans best position is in midfield but there si too many other bigger bodies and his limited foot skills and average pace does not add anything we don't already have in there. I like Mclean but i think he is one we can use for trade. Hard to judge much from Cav but i think there is a hole there for him to fill and hope he gets a chance his year. Poor area of our list tried to fill it with Wingard last season but this Jack Martin could help in this area also have a look how Jamie Elliot's body and form is throughout this season as a free agent could be an option

MIDSIZE FORWARDS - GOWERS - LLOYD - DICKSON - LIPINSKI - DALE ----- Tricky area of our list. I think Lloyd is our best option here with Dale, Lipinski and Gowers fighting for the other 1 or 2 spots for this type of player. I like Dale i think he has some xfactor. I think Lipinski should play as a pure forward but looks like through VFL they have built him up as a midfielder which i think we already have plenty of. Gowers I think has potential as a third tall rather than our full forward and i think would thrive as a third forward midsizer. Love Dickson but he seems out of favor now and is aging. Average in this area but if we add two buzzing quick small forward i think that will help these boys out.

from this id have : Hunter, Wallis, Mclean up on the trade table to help us fill holes in other areas, Roberts will likely leave, Morris and Dickson's time nearing the end.

I’d add Greene in as someone challenging for a best 22 spot when fit. I really like him.

I agree on your assessment of trading Wallis and McLean, but the only issue is that both still have multiple years to go (2021 and 2022 respectively).

Hunter I think is pretty underrated, in the sense that his two-way running is absolutely vital to our structure. He contributes so much towards linking up the play from defence to forward. His disposal is pretty shocking, but as a defensive wing I think he's one of the best in the business. I wouldn't want to trade him, but I can understand people's frustration with him.

In terms of our targets, fully agree with you on the areas we need to address (pace, goal sense, tall defender). I like Astbury as a key defender, but I worry that his lack of pace would prevent him fitting into our side, so I think Tomlinson is the better option as you suggested. Martin would be perfect for adding pace and x-factor to our forward half, so to me he's worth the gamble and potential price. Elliot, if he could stay fit, would be great, but that's a huge "if". Either way I'd love to take a look at one of Collingwood's smalls, since they had about 5 or 6 players who outscored our leading goalkicker last year.

For outside wings, Newnes is a free agent this year, and his delivery inside 50 is among the best in the AFL. Atkins is also coming out of contract this year, and we've enquired in the past, so he'd be a nice addition. The other one is Ed Langdon from Freo. Questionable disposal at times, but his speed (particularly his acceleration) is incredible, and is up there with Tippa as one of the best chase-down tacklers in the AFL. Any of those 3 would be great targets I think

Yeah, don't see how we'd acquire both Martin and Langdon, for example, without compromising our draft position too much. If I had to rank the 3 wing options, for me it's:
1st - Newnes
2nd - Langdon
3rd - Atkins

Considering what each would cost, I think Newnes is clearly the best option, being a free agent and considering our desperate need for better I50 delivery. The one thing that may work in our advantage for Langdon is that we've always maintained a very positive trading relationship with Fremantle, as we saw with the Halming and Crozier trades. I'm sure a trade for Langdon would come at a fair enough price if that is who we wanted to target, but I highly doubt it eventuates. He'd more likely choose Melbourne if anything

Instead of trading out a quality mid we should be looking to find other spots they can all play (which is what Bevo is doing obviously)

The only two contributing well in two positions are:
Wallis - 50/50 forward/inside mid
Bont - 70/30 inside mid/forward

We've then got Mclean, Dunkley, Libba, Smith, and Macrae who should all be spending time in the middle.

I wouldn't mind seeing Macrae spend 30% at a HBF for a couple of weeks to see if the space allows him to use his (kind of former) good kicking skills. That gives Mclean a 30/70 mid-forward ratio. I'd swap Wallis to more of a 80/20 forward when he is back and give Libba less time forward too. Smith remains more of an even split due to age/fitness.

The problem is when we throw in guys like Lipinski and eventually West, what happens with them? I am all for Wallis taking on a similar role to Ziebell at North, but that still leaves at least one surplus midfielder in the side. One of Lipinski or McLean, at the very least, needs to come out rather than shoe-horning a midfielder into the forward roles. I would rather see McLean in the middle and honestly couldn't pick who to trade if it came down to it, but as it stands we have too many mids playing in our 22 and nowhere near enough natural forwards

I would play Wallis as a permanent forward now. It's not going to happen, but I wish it would. We have too many better mids, and he does pretty well as a forward. McLean has been destroyed this year by not being able to play in the middle, but he's much better than Wallis in there imo.
