Coaching Staff Senior Coach: John Worsfold - Thank you John

Our club is already a meme, Brad Scott would be perfect. He holds the record for most games coached with out making a grand final, and not once were they a genuine premiership threat during his tenure. He is so much more Essendon than he is North Melbourne. Doodoo my doo, get him in doo, doo, doo.

To be fair he got the best of his players and that is not very Essendon.

Interesting Wallace doesn’t go on and explain what the Tigers structure is and how it’s so different to ours. He just says the usual that everybody else has been saying about if you stop our run off half back. He’s not telling us anything.

He did go further into it after the Geelong game. We are too prepared to stand off players in the zone and just guard an area. We allow them to get more than 10 meters away. On top of that the roll over is too slow so sides can work through our zone easily. We tend to set up too much to a strict position. The other part waswe are too much see ball get ball. Not enough outside layers at the contest. Too many within 3 meters causing a lot of close in handball. He mentioned Melbourne have the same issue as the have too many inside midfielders who just hunt the footy with no regard to playing outside the 3 meter zone.

Fair enough but you could accuse most teams of doing same things week to week. For example Saints against us their defenders were standing off our players and sticking to guarding a zone and worked well in first half until we got smarter.

Again couple of decisions go our way and we’re 6-3 and no discussion required.

Last we go 10-4, yes we lost against top 4 but we were without Daniher and Fantasia at times.

:)

I want change mate and if it takes another loss to Carlton for that to make it happen so be it. In other words short term pain for long term gain.
And what about EFC have you observed that makes you think short term pain is gonna lead to long term gain?

Even if my preferred change strategy was to hope for an embarrassing blow-out coach killing loss (which it isn't).. there is still no way I would want that loss to come against Carlton. Get a hold of yourself man and have some self respect!

They already have the 1999 prelim, and a bunch of against all odds upsets. Where's the long term gain if Carlton's miserable supporters get more ammunition in the process?

I'm fine if you want to dream of GWS belting us by 120 points in 4 weeks time. But I REALLY want us to win this game on the weekend. Very disappointed by what has been dished up in 2019 but I'll be barracking harder than ever on Sunday.

unfortunately our club has only reacted to our loss to Carlton last year that yielded in the termination of Mark Neeld. That then resulted in Woosh getting prickly with the media which transpired into the playing group playing manic football...

I want that manic footy back. So if it takes another loss to Carlton for Xavier and Co. to stand up and lead the club towards greatness then so be it.

I don't care who gets sacked but there is no way i just want to keep treading water like we are.

Agree, you see it time and again, the opposition player in possession simply taps the ball beyond the two (or more) Essendon players at the contest to the other opposition players waiting for it.

Noow I am not saying he is the man for the job but I will say this , 2018 was only a shocking failure if you over rated the list. We are not as good as people think we are. The other thing about 2018 and 2019 is we have no 2017 60 goal Daniher and limited footy from 40 goal Raz. It was their role in the forward half along with Hooker that got us into finals in 2017.
Woosha is getting burnt by his team defence game plan buthe was8always going to as we are a club that has not had a culture of team defence and playing your role. We have secured oneof the best assistants in Rutten as far as defence goes but it is a massive learning curve but it has to happen. We can not just go on with what we where doing. There has been comment in the media from some of the smarter comments people stating that we allow sides to walk through our defence too easily at times during games whichiswhat I have been saying for at least 5 years.

Things the coach can not control. Turnovers in the back half. Injuries to ourbest two forwards. Two things that are killing us right now.

Personally I doubt any coach can make us top 4 right now unless there is a change in some personal and we somehow find a decent leadership group to helpthe captain.

Perhaps we need a change of Captain too...........

For me it's the " above the shoulders " that we have to look at. We have the talent, but somehow we're not switching on when we have to.
They should get a pro sports psyche in to tutor their brains about what it takes to compete and win with work ethic in pressure situations. I think Richmond did that a few years ago and it seemed to have worked. Well it did work.

Richmond have a woman named Emma Murray who specialises in mindfulness and high performance mind coaching. She also helps out at DJR and Scott McLaughlin has high praise for her being one of the main contributing factors to him piecing his championship win together.

She is charged as being the one who turned Jack Riewoldts career around from utter tossbag to potent player.

I've been banging on about us looking into this type of thing for ages now but unsure if its addressed by the club.

This is basically what I think but more articulate.

If we had the foresight to push the narrative that we were an inexperienced list that hadn’t played a lot of footy together that was trying to implement something completely new and yes there will be teething problems then Worsfold wouldn’t be copping any heat at all.

And Worsfold’s dead bat is only making it worse.

Needs to do the wide ranging philosophical stuff to confuse journalists.

I thought we did have the foresight to do this

Heppell = we have to be patient

got slammed all round.

Louder, ram it down everyone’s throat.

The only reason Hardwick and Buckley still have jobs is that their clubs went into bat for them consistently and vociferously when they were in the s**t.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it

When watching the game, observe the 5 m radius around the ball.

Essendon almost always have everyone in there and the opposition will have one or two.

If essendon get the ball, you'll see the other side collapse the area and force the turnover or stoppage as they can only do the dinky 1 m handball to the next guy under pressure.

If the opposition get the ball, they get it to the outside where they have numbers and off they go.

Rinse / repeat.

When we have Jobe we were better because it was Jobe go get the ball, Hocking etc covered the outside. Since Jobe left, everyone is chasing the ball.

Yep. I've noticed it particularly with Parish and Langford but it is a lack of compose and communication across the board that undoes us every time. Redman's positioning on the other hand is elite, especially for someone so young. Makes you wonder if the break down in communication is a coaching issue or a player issue.

Coincidence that Redman is Worsfold's favourite player?

Is he? He's mine too!

I think that reading the play has a lot to do with confidence so it could be that Parish and Langford lack confidence to position themselves effectively in these situations. It also has to do with footy smarts. Which comes more easily to some players than others for a whole host of reasons. Those reasons could well include favouritism by the coach or it could be that the coach's favouritism is recognition of the player's talent.

EG Bomber was very fond of Zerrett - did Zach's development accelerate because he was Bomber's favourite or did Bomber pay attention because of Zach's talent? In the end I think it boils down to luck, some players are luckier than others (with injuries, favouritism, timing.)

I measure a coaches quality in part by being good at teaching the slowest players and providing the tools and methods for the least confident to practice and grow their confidence.

The quickest ones will be good with almost any coach.

Agree. It's just like good teachers. Good students do well with poor teachers but a good teacher brings out the best in all the kids they teach.

Rumours have circulated for a while that Woosha is getting undermined by others within the club.l (ie assistant coaches). If we lose this weekend and/or Woosha gets sacked...I will demand the entire coaching group gets the sack. This is the type of situation Xavier Campbell is there to straighten out. If not then it’s time for him to look elsewhere.

I personally think we should back the club in. Hold fire until years end.

I think Woosha has done a fantastic job in transitioning the club from mediocre to once again a solid club since 2016. The club is now a place, once again where high quality players want to play for. Saad, Smith, Stringer and Shiel would have been players years ago, even before the drug scandal, that would have chosen a Hawthorn, or a Collingwood.

Now, I have been a strong believer in Woosha, but I feel that the time is ready for him to move on and to bring in a Mitchell type to lead Essendon into the next era of success.

We need to stop with the “meh feelins” type of response when Mitchell is brought up. I couldn’t give two shits about a gesture he did in a game years ago if he leads us to a premiership. If he is the best person for the job, we go and get him. Simple as that.

Agree but I would go with Ratten if available. The problem with Mitchell is how will he get along with Hepp, Hurley and Hooker after mocking the supplement saga.
