Amazing coincidences in football

In 1984, Fitzroy were 4 games out of the final five, with 6 games to go. We were 3rd last on the ladder with 5 wins.

I drew up a prediction ladder on a A4 foolscap page (as you do when you're a kid!) & I had the Roys scraping into the final 5 in the last round. And that's exactly what happened! We won the last 6 games of the season & got there on percentage.

I've never cheered for Collingwood so much in my life!!! They were playing fellow final five contender Footscray in Round 22 at Victoria Park. It was tight for 3 quarters, but then the Pies kicked 6 goals in the last quarter to book Fitzroy's ticket to the finals!

We were beating St Kilda comfortably at the Junction Oval & me, along with every Fitzroy supporter, were cheering on every Magpie goal that day! Lol, so we were watching our game, whilst glued to 3AW for the Collingwood game! Surreal to say the least! We also had to hope that Hawthorn defeated Geelong, which they did comfortably.

Robbie Walls the coach at the time, obviously didn't think that Fitzroy would make it, as he told guys like Michael Conlan, Leon Harris & Scott Clayton to go & have season ending operations at about Round 16.

Tom Boyd - forever closely linked to WESTERNBULLDOGS royalty

For 🐶 TB played 52 games & kicked 42 goals. EJ Whitten also had 42 goals after 52 games.

Career W-L for TB (61 games) 32-29.
EJ’s W-L after 61 games = 32-29.

Luke McDonald was given a contract extension by NMFC until the end of 2021.

Donald McDonald (his father) works at the club.

Pretty amazing coincidence.
Not the same McDonald who used to coach Werribee?

Not the same Werribee that Luke McDonald should be playing for?

Only five clubs have won VFL/AFL Premierships in years ending in 0 (new decades).
Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Melbourne and Richmond.

Collingwood has 4, Melbourne has 3, Essendon and Richmond have 2 while Carlton have 1.

1900-Melbourne, 1910-Collingwood, 1920-Richmond, 1930-Collingwood, 1940-Melbourne, 1950-Essendon, 1960-Melbourne, 1970-Carlton, 1980-Richmond, 1990-Collingwood, 2000-Essendon, 2010-Collingwood.

Also there have only been 4 Grand Finals that another team then these five were involved in (1900-Fitzroy, 1930-Geelong, 1950-North Melbourne, 2010-St.Kilda).

So get for a Carlton-Collingwood-Essendon-Melbourne-Richmond Grand Final combination for 2020.

Not actually a coincidence, just a fascinating statistical trend with betting implications if you're that way inclined, St Kildas scores since round 5 have been

68, 70, 70, 71, 68, 69

Those 6 Consecutive scores also go with a 66, 74, 76 earlier in the year. 9/11 between 66-76

Nearly identical scores against both WA teams

2018 Grand Final
West Coast Eagles = 11.13 (79)
Collingwood = 11.8 (74)

2019 Round 11
Fremantle = 11.13 (79)
Collingwood = 11.9 (75)
