I mean, last few years if I had to choose between sitting in the hot sun, unable to have a refreshment and watch Port Adelaide play, or, stand in a nice cool marquee sipping on a cold beer.... easy choice really.

Most fan bases aren't really concerned with money/sponsorship the way we are because most clubs haven't been to the wall the way we have been. St Kilda is in more debt than any club other than GWS and Gold Coast but they carry on as if its a right that they exist in the competition.

If that game was played at Marvel Stadium, the result might have been closer, but they would have made a financial loss. Fans don't care about that **** though, because it's someone else's money.

And if 4 points isn't enough for them to take it seriously, exactly what are they in the competition for?

She was estimating and on the rumour that they got paid $500 k to play there. Tredders said it was much more.
Of course they are upset.
They lost.
Stiff cheddar.
They failed to make any inroads into their massive debt on their own before the China opportunity came up.
They would have made much much less than that at Marvel stadium and still most likely would still have lost the game.
Every single year the ignorant small minded ill informed comments by the media come up after the Shanghai game, regular and predictable as clockwork

We are planning on being in China for the long run, but that doesn't mean we will see premiership points game there every year. At the moment Saints will play there in 2020 and 2021 and Mr Gui has backed a game for 2022 and 2023.

If other clubs don't pull their finger out and make something decent out of the opportunity, the AFL will stop premiership games being played there, but preseason games, AFLX, and AFLW games will replace them.

Bottom line, whilst Mr Gui is prepared to open his chequebook and the AFL want to grow the game we'll see some form of footy played in Shanghai in particular and China in general.

Agreed REH but unfortunately there is this frustratingly inherent trait of wasting time on discussions "why 'we' shouldn't" rather "why and how 'we' can".

Obviously there must checks and balances as with any major business decision but there comes a time when so much negativity becomes soul destroying.

There are distinct issues.

One being the PAFC initiated playing in China. I have always been a believer in the principle of playing in China.

Second only by default are the results Port gain from being in China. I have zero knowledge of the inner management other than to say it is absolutely essential the PAFC have a commercially experienced person on the ground in China - full stop!

How far has this negativity permeated into the AFL as a whole - is it at club level or just bitterness from people who are happy to always find fault.

In the end for me it's what's in it for Port Adelaide, warts and all and not be shoved aside by the AFL and others.

Typical sort of comments about crowd figure being a lie and Saints fans being pissed of with giving up a home game for that result ie big loss, injury, sickness, bugger all $$$ etc.

Port and the AFL as well Saint Kilda have to do something about getting people to sit on those outer seats, get a back pack camera roaming around the marquees to show where all the piss pot Aussies and Chinese really are, get a more competitive game, Saints have to take it more seriously, they have to make some decent $$$ out of it, otherwise when the 3 years of playing the Saints is up, there might not be any takers.

While the China experiment is of clear commercial benefit for Port Adelaide, its broader cultural one is bereft. On the surface, a meaningful push into the Chinese market is pointless. When you dig deeper, it still is. One only needs to compare the atmosphere of the Shanghai game to the scenes after the game in Darwin to see that the AFL should focus on those areas that don’t require its teams to take seven months to prepare for a weekend.

it was reported that St Kilda had been planning this trip – finding flights, accommodation and places to eat – since November.

That may be factually correct in that St Kilda was only formally advised around that time but two St K's staffers in corporate attire were sitting directly behind us last year, taking notes etc, so it's reasonable to suggest they had an inkling they would be in Shanghai this year, so they shouldn't have been slow out of the gates.

Why on earth didn't they follow as closely as possible the way Port have been doing as it's well documented and in the public arena.

Here’s a random factoid: the ground had the official coat of arms of Australia painted on it. That means the game was officially recognised by the Commonwealth of Australia as representing the Australian nation.

Ingenious idea. Whilst we are spit balling, I've also thought a Squad of Funky Dancers and float with a large fist carrying a lightening bolt could also be deployed to encourage crowd involvement.
