Righteo, time to get serious for a second.

**** this ****. **** it to hell.

I don't particularly like Beams as a person, for reasons I am not going into. I certainly was not thrilled with the trade, and I wish we never did it, but its done. I think there were sentimental, and ego reasons behind it, that we need to stamp out if we are being serious.

Precisely none of that makes me want to be less of a human being about **** than I should be though, nor would give me a free pass to dance round a bonfire throwing kero and laughing as the flames spread in whatever direction they may.

In the end, its kind of binary here. Option A, all this **** is ********. In which case, all the stuff posted in here is just egregious offensive bollocks.

Option B, there is substance behind it. In which case, people are posting a lot of **** that seems to be embracing, or dare I say, rejoicing in that, which means lets be clear embracing or rejoicing in a lot of suffering.

I have a couple of addictions that Ive fought long and hard, one bad for my body, one for my soul. I know what its like to be so dark and empty inside you fill that with **** thats not good for you. Its generally not something associated with being in a great place in life. So I'm not wishing that **** on my worst enemy, wheter its Beams, who at worst I'm mildly displeased with, or someone else. And I'm definitely not going around, posting crap, wondering who it is, playing detective or guessing or whatever the **** this is games, pointing with mock concern or prurient interest, and bathing in it like battery acid.

think people. Think. We are better than this. I know it.

I like how you think that people might have more generous spirits than they do, but I think that the battle is lost. Ponies have won the day. People find it far too pleasing to locate the point of vulnerability in their fellow humans and to stick their fingers in it.

Reckon Robbo has gone absolutely hunting for a gambling story since these rumours have stepped up a gear. Of course he'd love nothing more than to drag a Collingwood players name through the dirt if given the chance.

I bet if he knew the players names he'd publish them, such is the pigheaded creature of Robbo.

You're right of course, I hate it but you are right.

I'm just tired, and been poked enough myself, but there is the occasional spark of anger to keep me going. That will pass soon too.

In many ways we are seeing the worst of social media.

We have a player injured. Likely the season is done for.

We also have a player, who has publicly spoken about his demons of struggle.

Our player, who regardless of what people think of him, was extremely close to his father. That is a fact. He has a unique bond. All power to both of them for forging such a son father bond.

The father died, we know it cut up Dayne.
For those that have lost a parent, it can be a painful life experience.
(For some in strained or horrible relationships they may have other feelings. But that’s a different discussion.)
Anyway, Dayne even got a tattoo of his father.
Nowadays he is with partner and children. It’s a very deep experience for him.

Whatever the Beams personality was or has become, it’s evident (in the way he speaks now, carries himself, what he talks about) he’s matured. To me he comes across as a guy who wants to be a better person and more than just a footballer.

Should we have traded him in?
Yes or no actually is a different discussion. We have him on our list.
His play wasn’t stellar Beams, but to me still advanced to what we’d get from a replacement lower in the pecking order.

We now learn he’s getting surgery on his hip. Including seeing hospital pics.

We can take it a face value.

So to the flotsam floating about. What’s true or not?
Most people have no idea but with social media small made up rumours, or small gossips can spread like a disease.
The part that (unfortunately doesn’t shock me) is how some want to latch onto the worst of it and flash it around as if they have discovered Atlantis.

But that’s the worst of social media.

But what if any of our players have addictions, illegal drugs, alcohol, gambling whatever?
Surely the response to our own is to help or if the information is real bring it to the club or professionals.

Or just not drag down a person when they’re at a low point.

Anyway that’s my take, our players deserve to be treated with respect.

Colic!

I have my view on Dayne Beams but this is one time I prefer to watch from the sidelines. For my liking, there is too much sentimentality, speculation, optimism, pessimism and rumour attached to the D Beams debate. It's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't threads, in which you have to pick now where this saga is heading. I will leave this to the tough-skinned and club loyalists to thrust and parry over. Whatever is said against or in defence, the bottom line is that he will not contribute to a final's campaign this year, and the rest of it's all just based around idle chatter or blind loyalty, and I am not sure where I sit between the two.

Nice and clever use of a pejorative.

Always intriguing that if some one prefers to be supportive or loyal, to their own family, extended family, people important to them, they can be labelled as blind as if they’d jump over the cliff with the lemming they support.

The link between gambling and depression in AFL players/coaches is in the open now. It is not going away. David Swartz has done a great job offering support to individuals but it requires a systematic approach by the AFL and Clubs and they are starting to step up. I think that is a good thing. In terms of who those individuals are remains speculation but 120 players is a lot of lives who are potentially being destroyed. Gambling is not very private after a while and is a world full of gossip and dubious creatures.

I hope the Clubs can respond and help these people with their addictions. Some will not respond but grooming needs to be stopped.

So Beams has a hip injury that he’s carried through his teenage years, a well known issue that would require surgery at some point...yet we still give away a first round pick for him?!?!
Yes that’s correct.
Actually a bit more.

That’s the price the two clubs agreed under this deal.

Was 50/50 on those rumors buzzing around, mainly the size of the gambling (beams had always loved a punt, especially in the early days at the pies)

After all these reports looks like it’s 100%

Brissy sold us a washed up, flawed version of beams

Got fleeced

Is it normal/acceptablefor a ‘Leading Councellor’ in a medical field to provide information like this? I find it astonishing that this woman would put her name and face to this type of article.

She hasn’t named anyone so what’s the harm.

I have no idea what the harm is. There may be none. I don’t think that’s the point though.
I’m trying to get my head around the thought process that would lead a counsellor to reveal that two of her patients have each lost a million dollars and that one is from a VIC club and one is from an interstate club. Tbh, I don’t believe that article as written. I think it’s self-serving on most levels by those involved.

Maybe the AFL could have a long, hard look at ceasing its association with the gambling industry - inc banning all the nauseating ads for gambling, all clubs could stop having pokies etc etc - the hypocrisy around this issue is stunning

"we love the revenue - not sure what to do about the human fallout though"

"GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY" = BULLS**T

The AFL is appointing a snr exec / commissioner for Mental Health while they are in bed with the gambling industry?? - shameful hypocrisy of the 1st order

FTR, she doesn't have any actual medical qualifications. Her only academic qualification is a "Bachelor of Counselling from the University of New England" - Pretty much a mickey mouse degree from a mickey mouse university.

Only have ourselves to blame, knew exactly what we were getting. Old, injury prone gambler who also had an attitude problem when he first left us. I wasn’t keen at all on him returning.

Getting within a couple points of a flag makes teams do stuff they may not normally do. I get the idea why we went for him, wanting a great player now to make a difference in a big game rather than drafting for a potential good player in 5yrs. If we finished 8th and lost in first week I don’t think we would’ve wanted him.

Agree. This is shameless self promotion. See below for Aflpa response to the article. Marvellous whack on Robbo at the end.

The AFL Players’ Association wishes to issue the following statement in response to a story by the Herald Sun featuring commentary by gambling counsellor Jan Beames.

Gambling is a significant societal issue among young men, which is why the AFLPA engages the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation to run proactive programming for AFL players.
Current and past players who require treatment for gambling-related issues, and any other mental health issues, can access a national network of 120 specialist psychologists and psychiatrists through the AFLPA on a free and confidential basis. It has been well documented that hundreds of current and past male and female players utilize this service annually.

Ms Beames is not a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist and therefore the AFLPA does not refer players to her service. The AFLPA only refers players to practitioners that are bound by an ethical code regulated by a body recognised by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The services utilised by the AFLPA ensure that our members’ confidential treatment details are not the subject of dangerous and unsubstantiated public commentary.

Ms Beames is aware of the reasons as to why the AFLPA has not approved her to be part of its national psychology network.

The Herald Sun would have been in a position to include this information in its story had the journalist bothered to contact the AFLPA.

Maybe its is as she said for the AFL & AFLPA to acknowledge the epidemic?

The AFLPA have given her a little back hander in their statement...oh and also Robbo. Nice!

Good old Robbo bashing, eh? Saves thinking.

1)Beames has seen over 50 footballers. Given that the AFLPA don't refer players to her, it would be fair to say they don't like what the AFLPA are serving them. There are examples given in the story of the failures of the AFLPA experts. You appear to believe that the mere possession of a degree qualifies you as an undeniable expert (vis a vis the clueless muppets in the medical dept at the Collingwood football club).

2)She and her husband describe the AFLPA program as pathetic. The AFLPA response is typical. Attack the person, and not the issue.

OK - I've just read the full HS articles at my local cafe. It just came across as a big advert/promotion for her business, and slagging off at the AFLPA for not directing players her way.

Given her lack of any medical, qualifications, her flagrant and shameless self promotion (enabled through Robinson and the HS in return for a "story") and her complete lack of discretion, the AFLPA is absolutely right in avoiding referring any players her way.

Good on you. You almost made a post that didn’t bag the CFC medical dept. You of all people should be aware that the Aflpa would be unable to refer to or endorse someone without appropriate qualifications. She may do great work but unless you want bodies like the aflpa to start making qualitative assessments of mental health “practitioners”, they are better off relying on those accredited by professional bodies.

That Robbo didn’t make contact with the aflpa is shoddy journalism.

Is that thinking?
