She may do great work but unless you want bodies like the aflpa to start making qualitative assessments of mental health “practitioners”,

They are already making qualitative assessments by selecting 120 practitioners nationally.

they are better off relying on those accredited by professional bodies.

AHPRA are hopeless. When you have Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Chinese medical (sic) practitioners on your list, you are in trouble.

That Robbo didn’t make contact with the aflpa is shoddy journalism.

Is that thinking?

Robbo could well have the information from Beames why she did not have players referred to her. Contacting the AFLPA would just deliver self-serving nonsense like they did in the press release.

PS. You're getting there (with thinking).

The cause of the inflammation may or may not be clear from the scan.

Inflammation is the least of his problems. And scans never reveal the cause of inflammation anyway.

They will also be told that they might be able to manage it and that the pain may go away if managed.

Don't you dare throw pain science at me. Pain science is merely an excuse for inadequate therapists to offload the failure to rehabilitate an injury to the patient instead of themselves.

Whether or not the player is willing and able to perform with the condition isn't clear in the scan, as it comes down to a range of other factors.

Bravo. It's called "function".

If AHPRA are so loose with their criteria, what does that say about those who aren’t on it?

Good old Robbo bashing, eh? Saves thinking.

1)Beames has seen over 50 footballers. Given that the AFLPA don't refer players to her, it would be fair to say they don't like what the AFLPA are serving them. There are examples given in the story of the failures of the AFLPA experts. You appear to believe that the mere possession of a degree qualifies you as an undeniable expert (vis a vis the clueless muppets in the medical dept at the Collingwood football club).

2)She and her husband describe the AFLPA program as pathetic. The AFLPA response is typical. Attack the person, and not the issue.
“The clueless muppets in the medical dept at the Collingwood football”

“Attack the person, and not the issue.”

She hasn’t named anyone so what’s the harm.
Correct, she's trying to bring attention to a significantly broader issue within the AFL player ranks - she hasn't named anyone.

As someone who's worked in positions where I have seen what a serious gambling addiction can do, he's clearly not in a good way - and needs serious help/assistance from those around him to turn things around. Which is going to require quite a bit of time.

I absolutely adore the punt, and I truly love racing - but its an insidious disease once a full-blown addiction takes hold. Truly ruins lives.

Fair reasons why the AFLPA don’t refer players to her, no qualifications and doesn’t seem to have much of a grasp on patient confidentiality.

Agree. This is shameless self promotion. See below for Aflpa response to the article. Marvellous whack on Robbo at the end.

The AFL Players’ Association wishes to issue the following statement in response to a story by the Herald Sun featuring commentary by gambling counsellor Jan Beames.

Gambling is a significant societal issue among young men, which is why the AFLPA engages the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation to run proactive programming for AFL players.
Current and past players who require treatment for gambling-related issues, and any other mental health issues, can access a national network of 120 specialist psychologists and psychiatrists through the AFLPA on a free and confidential basis. It has been well documented that hundreds of current and past male and female players utilize this service annually.

Ms Beames is not a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist and therefore the AFLPA does not refer players to her service. The AFLPA only refers players to practitioners that are bound by an ethical code regulated by a body recognised by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The services utilised by the AFLPA ensure that our members’ confidential treatment details are not the subject of dangerous and unsubstantiated public commentary.

Ms Beames is aware of the reasons as to why the AFLPA has not approved her to be part of its national psychology network.

The Herald Sun would have been in a position to include this information in its story had the journalist bothered to contact the AFLPA.

It was a disgustingly cynical article. The Herald Sun are feeding off internet rumours and thus have decided to run with a story to promote an unqualified person running a business in the field, because she has unethically fed them some negativity and hints.

Having said that, society as a whole has a significant issue with gambling. what was described as grooming gamblers in the article is extremely prevalent in the corporate world and it wouldn't surprise me if it was extremely prevalent in AFL. Additionally, AFL footballers are likely to face a higher than average risk of addiction in general, as large dopamine hits are part and parcel of their job on field as well as the dopamine hits from the adulation they receive off-field, so the AFLPA does need to be supporting and educating their players as well as possible.

Do good gamblers exist?

The house always wins my friend.
Not in casinos (good gamblers existing, I mean). Except very skilled poker players playing against less skilled players, enough to cover the rake.

The house doesn’t always win if the likelihood of an event occurring is subjective (e.g. in sports or horses), and the “house” has priced the market in a fashion which is a) incorrect, and b) incorrect enough to cover their margin or overround.

The mathematics always wins.

That’s the key.

(But there is a huge difference between gambling all your dollars and having a bit of fun eg doing a weekly Quaddie.
Akin to being an alcoholic v having a weekly social drink or having a glass of wine with dinner.)

Yes there is truth there.

But being a mug that enjoys spending some dollars on a flutter or using some dollars on alcohol or a few dollars in Collingwood merchandise or a few dollars on food at the footy or some dollars buying a Collingwood membership or a few dollars on clothes that’s fashionable et al.

All of those are “mugs” spending but enjoying yourself is fine in my eyes.

But spending more than you can afford or every last dollar on anything that can be the road to ruin.
